Indiana had a plain old loss to a pumped-up top 5 team on the road. I don't know why they are being treated as some kind of joke. There have been far more lopsided games in the history of 2 and 4 team championship setups.

There's a lot of talking heads calling Indiana the worst team in playoff history and the answer is...what did they expect? When the playoff goes from 4 to 12 teams there will more iffy teams getting in. Some of those teams will win, perhaps today. This is what the people and the network$ wanted.

Wait until they get a load of Boise State on Jan 1, a team ranked a nudge below the Gophers by most computers.

Plus a Non-conference schedule that was incredibly weak, Florida International, Western Illinois & UNC-Charlotte (pre-Brewster HC).

A lot of folks getting bent out of shape in this thread for what appear to be basic facts about the Big 10 being nothing special.

I agree the big ten is nothing special. Neither is the SEC. So I don’t disagree that Indiana is probably not much better than Minnesota. Indiana is probably an underdog against bama and South Carolina.

But bama and South Carolina would probably be 8-4 or 9-3 in the big ten too. Above average teams are above average teams regardless of SOS

Playing in the SEC doesn’t mean bama being average and losing to bad teams doesn’t count.
So it’s more the espn narrative that I disagree with than statements about Indiana I disagree with.

I’ve been on the Indiana is overrated train all year (but I also thought they should be in the playoff and still do)

I don't disagree with any of that. They got a fortunate scheduling break and made the most of it.

I think the Hoosiers would likely be an Underdog against Illinois. Perhaps a full strength Iowa as well and maybe even at Minnesota.

Ok. If the Gophers had the EXACT same season (same opponents, same scores) would you have been saying “nah, we’re overrated. Bama should be in the playoff ahead of us.”

They’re basically veiling the argument that 3 loss Bama should be in because they’re historically a top team. Well then, win the games you’re scheduled for. Don’t lose to historically terrible Vandy and currently terrible Oklahoma (both in terrible fashion) and make a case for being in the playoff.

Indiana lost to a higher ranked ND in a night road game. OK? This was the FIRST ever non neutral site CFP game. Let’s see how the other road teams do…

How would Bama have done at South Bend last night in 25 degree weather?

Same with Ole Miss, don't lose to a terrible Kentucky team at home and mediocre LSU and Florida teams. One loss IU vs four three plus loss SEC teams is an easy call. Same with Miami don't lose the last two games of the season
 

Penn State is blowing up the undefeated ACC regular season champs.

That has to count for the Big Ten, who also has mid-tier teams (Minnesota, USC) that gave Penn State a totally even game for 60 minutes.

If the gophers were 11-1 but beat like one team in the top half of the big ten and played nobody non conference. I would probably say they should be in the playoff but I am not yet sure if they are good enough to win the national title.

The reason why Indiana should be in over bama isn’t because they’re better. We don’t know if they are. But we do know bama loses to mediocre teams and Indiana doesn’t.
Indiana deserved the spot because they might have been one of the best in the country. I already know bama isn’t.
 

I think the B1G and SEC clearly have 2-3 teams that could win any other conference this year and a lot of years, but I don’t know why we have to assume a conference is great top to bottom every year just because the champion comes from that conference most often.

Yup. Alabama, Florida, LSU, and Georgia winning national titles from 2003-2022 doesn’t mean ole Miss is better than Indiana in 2024

I mean, we knew Indiana wasn’t the best either, but if we have to do a playoff we aren’t trying to watch three loss teams.

We don’t. They were 0-1 vs playoff teams
Bama like 1-1 vs playoff teams

Maybe if Indiana had 3 games they’d be 2-1
They are now 0-2

Bama is 8-2 against non playoff teams
Indiana is 11-0

I'm not saying any of THIS year's 3 loss teams should have been in the Playoffs, but it also shouldn't be an automatic disqualifier either.

A 3L team could very reasonably be more deserving than a 2L squad if any/some/all of these are factored:

- 1 of Ls was in the Conf Championship
- Ls were against quality opponents (T25 or better)
- We're competitive close defeats
- Also have quality Ws (vs T10)
- Beat other team being considered head to head
- Star player/QB was out for a game
- Top Tier SOS overall including a NonConf game/win

None of these applied to 2024 Alabama.
 


I think Indiana would have pounded Clemson.

Indiana has some very good players on both sides of the ball and they looked like they belonged on the field with the Irish. Just Notre Dame had more and better players, and better play calling.

I do think the gophers would have competed better against Notre Dame than Indiana did.
