While his tune has changed more recently (to getting top $$), not long ago JJ claimed that money wouldn't be the deciding factor, that the QB would make a big difference, and stated a preference for KC. It'll be interesting to see whether the team can come to an agreement on an extension with JJ now, particularly after Mike Evans' big deal in Tampa. I'm in the minority, I'm sure, but I think if there's no extension forthcoming, or the demands are too high, JJ ought to be shopped. The Vikes need some draft capital, particularly if they want to move up to take the next QB. And while JJ might be the best receiver in the game right now, high end wide receiver talent isn't that tough to find in the draft.

It's really just two years for the Falcons, they overpaid but they get to give their current core group a shot. If he's awful next year, they just have to live through one bad season before the reset.

It kind of does now. It feels like the guys who ever become "something" showed it in their first year with the exception of Jordan Love. Jordan Love's development is sort of the exception now.
 

So if Cousins had stayed healthy how much more does he get paid? I think the injury might be moot according to ATL.

In today's NFL you do. The only circumstance where you don't is if they are sitting behind a proven/HOF QB.

You don't draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round and have them sit behind Sam Darnold.
 


Two interesting under the radar signings that popped up this morning, at least interesting to me anyway.

Washington signs Marcus Mariota, while expected to draft a QB at #2 overall. What is the plan with Sam Howell?

NY Jets sign Tyrod Taylor, obviously have Rodgers. What is the plan with Zach Wilson?

I'm a big Howell fan, honestly, I could see someone taking a flyer on him if the price tag wasn't very high. Wilson, maybe not as much reason to be optimistic but still a talented player that someone may take a flyer on at some point.

From everything I hear locally, The Jets don’t want Wilson in the building anymore and they made it clear to him, when they gave him permission to seek a trade with anyone else, prior to yesterday - apparently there were no takers and he’ll end up being cut and try and catch on with someone most likely.

I would be surprised if they address his extension before the draft; it they’re selecting the QB of the future then, he’d likely want to know who it is before making a decision on said extension.

I don't think Wilson was promised anything other than the ability to compete for the starters gig in Pittsburgh.

If he can't play effectively or disrupts the locker room, the Steelers can cut bait with virtually zero salary cap repercussions.

I don't think Russ has much bargaining power to demand anything.

And for everyone bitching about how they've handled the Cousins situation, they clearly came into these negotiations with multiple plans, they stuck to their plan, and they had the discipline to not go over their number with Cousins.

They've improved the defense, they got younger on defense, shed some big cap numbers, and set the team up moving forward. People only want to look at missing on Cine and Booth (more than likely missing anyway) when it comes to judging KAM but I have to say at this point that I have reason to be optimistic. And I think it's safe to say that for the most part KOC is a pretty damn good HC.

Just F’ing stupid to buy your way into the top 3 at such a steep price in draft picks, so you can draft Bryce Young. At best Trevor Lawrence (he’s fine, but Jags aren’t exactly SB contenders in his tenure).


Fine if they take Penix or Nix in 2nd round.


Maybe better play is to wait until 25.
 

If you’re going to trade away JJ to get a top 3 pick — that’s the realistic way you can do it without giving away the farm — then I’m not convinced that it isn’t better, again, to just wait to do that until 25.

He has to play for us this year.

'25 draft is supposedly QB weak, at least at this point.

I agree with you, I'm not wild about giving away a ton of future picks to move up. NFL rosters are still by and large built through the draft and we've had poor draft history for quite a few years. We need picks.

But I'm not wild about giving $30 million plus to a WR, either, when it's a heck of a lot easier to find high end receiver talent then just about any other skill position. I'd give up JJ if we could move up and get "the" guy (as opposed to "a" guy) at QB, without a net loss of picks. But QB is such a crap shoot.

I actually like Howell quite a bit too. If I am a team looking to do something similar to what Tampa did with Baker, I'd like my chances much more with Howell than Fields.
 



I honestly don't mind if the Vikes take a step backwards in '24 - IF it is done as part of a long-term plan.

for far too long, it seems as if the organization has not had a long-term plan. a lot of short-term moves have been made to keep the team (allegedly) competitive. and what is the result? 1 playoff win in the last 6 years.

time to take a step back - evaluate - make a long-term plan and carry out the long-term plan.

and that requires someone to sit down and tell the Wilfs that finishing right around .500 every year and squeaking into the playoffs is not a long-term path to success.

draft a QB - give him a year to learn the system. and then in '25, use all that cap space to make a big push in free agency and revamp the roster.

I'm with you on WR. If the Vikings could trade JJ and get to 4 or higher, plus accumulate additional picks while keeping #11, I would do that in a heartbeat.

As far as giving up future picks to move up and get a QB, I don't have a problem with that either. NFL rosters may be built mostly through the draft, but that doesn't matter if you don't have a QB. And the only way to get an elite one is through the draft.

The last 3 QB drafts have been mostly terrible. This one has the potential to be very good, with multiple franchise QB's possible. If the Vikings identify one they love, you go up and get him no matter the cost.
