Useless Stuff You Should Know

The Sacramento Kings have now ended their streak of missing the postseason that went back to 2006. The torch has been passed for longest active run by a North American (NFL-NBA-MLB-NHL) pro franchise to miss the playoffs to...

...the New York Jets (12 seasons).

Next are the Buffalo Sabres. Courtesy of the Dan Patrick Show.

15+ years is amazing when so many teams make the playoffs now days.

Further demonstrating how versatile he is, Shohei Ohtani became the first Major League Baseball player on Wednesday to get tagged with a Pitch Clock violation as both a pitcher and a hitter in the same game.

Also picked up the W and drove in a run as the Halos defeated the Ms.

Major League Baseball allowed balls bouncing over the fence declared as home runs until the rule was changed in 1931. Supposedly Babe Ruth never had a bounce over the fence home run.
There was also a stretch of time in the late 1800's when players could request a high or a low pitch.

We saw this in a Twins game this year and I didn't know the rule existed but when there's catcher's interference (bat hits catcher's glove on a swing) it isn't an automatic dead ball. I always assumed it was. The manager can elect to go with what the result of the play was instead.

Courtesy of the Kate Love Instagram page, an interesting tidbit about her husband Kevin, former Timberwolf. During his 15 season NBA career, his teams have qualified for the Playoffs 5 times.

All 5 times his team advanced to the NBA Finals.

This spot in South Dakota, between the towns of Meadow and Glad Valley, is the furthest point you can get away from a McDonald's. You're 107 miles away (145 miles by car). At least that was the case back in 2019, odds are there's now a McDonald's in both Meadow and Glad Valley by now...

Did you know that 95% of television broadcasting is now Frank Thomas selling testosterone?

Okay, this one is officially not useless - the Cornhuskers are totally fake pretenders..

Tuesday, August 29th: The day the running stopped.

(Some of my fellow old-timers may get the reference)

9 2, 0 0 3. That's the record for the most fans attending a woman's athletic event...

... it was just set by Nebraska for a women's volleyball game. Can't say I like Nebby, but it is pretty amazing they got 92,003 fans to watch volleyball. Way to go Nebby, in this case, you've done good.

Around 16 million men alive today are descendants of Genghis Kahn.

A somber fact (in comparison to my "Fritos for the win" post that started this thread). Over 95% of all animals that have lived on the earth have gone extinct. We're currently losing about 24 species a day (and that's a pretty conservative estimate).

The Ivory Billed Woodpecker is just one of the species of birds that recently went extinct, and currently about 2/3rds of all the species that live in Antarctica (such as the Empire penguin) are endangered.

Voyager 1 was launched September of 1977
As of August 2022 it was 14.6 billion miles away from our planet.
Voyager 2 was launched before Voyager 1. A five-year mission, that's still going (but it won't be for too much longer...)
  • Voyager 2 launch date was Aug 20, 1977
  • Voyager 1 launch date was Sept 5, 1977.

On average Mercury is the closest planet to Earth.

Mercury is also the closest planet on average to every other planet in the solar system.

Only five universities has produced both a President and a Super Bowl winning quarterback:

Michigan
Stanford
Navy
Delaware
Miami (Ohio)

Yep, makes sense. Do the nine-months math. With day-light savings, the sun sets earlier and nights are longer...
