Henley in portal

The reason has “struggled” to do that is because solid portal guys don’t want to come to Minnesota unless they’re from here.

If you’ve got one or two seasons left, you’re leaving because you want to play and ideally you’d like to win too.

Anyone poo-pooing St. Thomas as a future threat to Gopher athletics has their head buried in the sand. UST has much greater apsirations than the Summit League.

Pride comes before the fall.
Can easily see them rising to be on Big East radar, given how wide open the market is in the Twin Cities for high level basketball.

Willis, Loewe, and Stephens were all solid players from the portal who are not from MN.

The same gopher team that is becoming everyone else's farm team... How was the Gopher's Net and KenPom btw?

Is having a NET of about 200 and only slightly above one of the worst Gopher teams in history the UST super bowl equivalent? lol. Going to be funny to watch the Gophers siphon off UST's best players when they manage to become decent.

I’m talking about times when we’ve done a lot of losing.

First year, no one knew what would happen.

Last year, they knew the first year was bad = no solid portal guys this year except special exception Garcia.

Should expect the same going forward, until it actually gets turned around.

I disagree. 24 months ago they were playing St. Olaf, Carleton, Hamline, etc. At face value they were a middling team but you are absolutely delusional if you don't see the trajectory they are in. UST is a direct competitor to the U. I would be shocked if by 2030 they aren't in the Big East with a brand new arena. If the U sits around and waits ang longer that gap is only going to get smaller.

I'll wait until the Big East comes calling. Right now....they are an average team in a terrible conference. Probably one of the worst AQs this year.

This is worse than Brewster at this point... Beholden to the buyout.

Summit isn't a good conference by any means, but certainly not terrible either. SWAC, MEAC, NEC and OVC are terrible.

My god people. Henley and Thompson transfers have been the worst kept secret for weeks and everyone’s acting like it is some big surprise. Ben is not getting fired this year unless these 2 transferring turns into 2 or 3 more and there’s no indication that will happen. However this staff really needs to get some talent from the portal this year. We are all well aware of the posters that want Ben fired right now, I don’t think it needs to be repeated in every thread. If they don’t show significant improvement next year I would think a change would be made.

Then what do you say ?

Willis was a B1G caliber player. Loewe and Stephens weren't IMO. At least not B1G caliber starting level players, which they were asked to do.
Yeah, they probably aren't but I believe they could have gotten rotation minutes on most Big 10 teams. They aren't homerun portal guys, but they're guys I don't mind giving minutes to.

Henley really improved the last part of the season. I would prefer that he stuck around. I think he has serious potential. I'm disappointed, but it's not a crushing blow.

If Payne, Ola-Joseph, and/or Carrington enter the portal, that's when all bets are off. If the Minnesota kids Ben's building the program around are bailing on him, that's a strong indictment.

His defense looked elite at times.

Outside of Oral Roberts and maybe SDSU.....they are terrible this year. Look through all the teams schedules and try to figure out who had the best win of the bunch. Maybe SDSU beating Boise State?

Correct. If you want to know which posters love to bitch and moan just because....watch the Thompson thread specifically. Think we all expected (and kind of hoped) him to leave.

Got to keep the Minnesota players. That's the core that Johnson is tying his program to. He doesn't get to start from scratch again.

Well I’m already counting Battle and Cooper out. Now if a couple of Payne, Carrington, Ola Joseph, Garcia , or Betts hit the portal then that changes things. But right now Im not panicking over a 7 footer that isn’t good enough for Power 5 and a freshman that has potential but in reality played way more minutes then he deseraved.

I mean, there is some indication.

Henley was always the guy that we all assumed might leave after the Evans situation. However, until today, there really wasn't indication he was leaving.

There has been some indication that Battle and/or Cooper are leaving. The announcers were openly speculating on Battle leaving during the Big 10 tournament and Cooper walked on Senior Day. There was also the tweet where it said something about it not being the last person (in reference to Thompson).

Again, those don't mean anything for certain but they are "some" indication.

It doesn't sound like you're panicking over our starting (and only) PG, one of our only wings (Henley), and one of our more talented players (Battle) leaving either.

Its rated as the 22nd best conference, so below avg of 16, but it's far from the worst conference or anything. Compared to the B1G, yeah it's terrible, but in the landscape of CBB it's not.

And so did Carrington and Ola-Joseph but now people want to hitch their Ben wagon to them.

Agree with both of your points 100%.

Henley was compelling to us because we followed his improvement throughout the year and we were pulling for him but the simple fact of the matter is that his overall freshman numbers weren't very good, even for a freshman. There were well over 200 FRESHMAN GUARDS WHO PLAYED 300 MINUTES OR MORE who had a True Shooting Percentage and Player Efficiency Rating as good or better than his. If I lowered that search factor to 200 minutes or more I'd find even more. Also, who knows how many other freshman guards we could have recruited that could have improved as much or more with his playing time.

Maturity is where the transfer portal is at anyway.

I’m saying I’m willing to let it play out. Battle really struggled this year at the three and although Cooper played well offensively in the BTT the Gophs need to get more athletic at those spots.

Thank you for doing those stats. I would ask this from a different view though- How many frosh played 600 minutes or more and had better stats than Henley? A lot of those frosh you are including in the 300 minute category got a lot of their minutes in non- conference and junk time minutes.

It's also a lot easier to be a successful 10 minute per game frosh in a lower conference. Henley got to be pretty darn good in the last 10 games. There is no cherry coating that he is a serious long term loss.

It is more important to save Cooper at this point than Battle- considering what we have for depth at the respective positions. Plus- I just don't think Battle can be reined in from his habit of shooting forced shots.

Suppose we keep them and rebuild yet again around them? If we suck again next year you can consider that MN pipeline and any ability to improve the program completely dead.

Are you including the guys coming off debilitating injuries in your depth analysis?
