So this opens 2 scholarships, no? Evans and Henley. With the potential for 3 more (TT, Battle, Cooper)? I would be surprised to see Cooper leave unless he just really dislikes the weather/MN/his team, but the portal makes literally zero sense.

Losing Henley isn't necessarily a direct blow across the bow itself, but it just puts you deeper into a hole of trying to build a team through the portal more than they already needed. With potentially 5 scholarships open, Ramberg will most certainly be awarded another scholarship next year.

Trying to be upbeat, but I just don't see how this thing will be anything but another dud next year. The likelihood of CBJ excelling enough next year to warrant year 4 is extremely low.

Samuels, Evans, and Henley make 3. Then 4 if you take Rambergs which I believe was the plan. Then Battle, Thompson and Cooper would make 7.

Am I right here? Is it that many?

Samuels was already accounted for in the incoming Christie. In theory, they only had 1 to give by Samuels graduating. Then another one went to Evans by removing Ramberg's scholly.

Edit: Golfing beat me to it.

Seven slots. Can we trade some of our late-round draft picks to get a higher first-round selection?

I can certainly understand the rationale for allowing student athletes to transfer without having to sit out and for them to have the ability to do NIL deals. But after watching it play out for a couple years now, I haven't changed my original opinion of either. It ultimately hurts college athletics from a fan's perspective. Hard to watch players you invest in leave so freely.
There has to be a compromise. It’s one thing if they’re one and done to the NBA. But one and done to another school?

I think coming out of high school, you should have to give your program two years of your eligibility in order to earn your free transfer for your last two (or one) years.

I think that’s plenty fair.

The losing is damaging. This program is damaged goods in a way it wasn't two years ago. That's my take, at least.
Pitino made 2 NCAA's in 8 years. The program overall had made 6 in 20 years this century. Now it's 6 in 22. I don't think two more bad seasons really changes much. The car was already full of dents.

Battle is gone. Henley is gone. Evans is gone. Cooper is probably gone. TT might be gone. A minimum of 3. Probably 4. Possibly 5.

We have as of the moment (assuming we lose Cooper and Battle):

Payne
Garcia
Ihnen
Fox
JOJ
Christie
Carrington

That leaves 6 open, 5 if you count Ramberg

I always thought the right approach was no sitting out for grad transfers and/or any coaching changes that occurred. No waiver process because that was too random. I understand the argument where a non-athlete can transfer freely but schools do make a pretty large investment into these players also (time/money/etc.) that shouldn't lead to this many defections. Maybe players should get compensated for their time too (NIL) but who couldn't see how college free agency would hurt college athletics?

Few things.

1. Ben is unfit for this job
2. People here don't like the portal. You know why, because our coach is TERRIBLE as using it. I bet Penn St, IA St, Miami, like it.
3. Unlike pro sports, most kids are only at a school 3-4 years anyway, thus isn't like we went from 10 year careers to 1-2. College is about the program not individuals. Duke loses 7-8 kids a year, no one cares there.

Disappointing.
It's hard not to compare the University of Minnesota to Boston College, which just seems impossible to change.
Perhaps we just shut down the program, accept our losses, and move on to become the dominant swimming and diving University in the B1G.
It doesn't matter who is coach. No coach in the world can change the inevitable. UMN is the Boston College of the B1G.

True. We tried Pitino and Johnson.

If they can't do it, I don't know how you turn this thing around.......

Plus Betts, and TT (for the moment) as mentioned.

My own tracking of the roster looks like this:

Battle (presumably out)
Cooper (presumably out)
*Ramberg
Thompson (hypothesized to be out)
Fox
Garcia
Ihnen
Ola-Joseph
Payne
Carrington
Henley (out)
Betts
Christie
Evans (out)

So that would be 4 or 5 open with the presumed coming departures, give or take Ramberg going back on scholarship.

Almost every recruit says they are looking for the best culture and best relationship with the coach. No one cares about culture. It's all about money and winning.
He's probably going to Louisville, how many games did they win this year?

Amen!

Even with our 2 best players (Garcia and Battle) being assets from the portal, Ben has done nothing to build this roster to set it up for any form of success. I've heard him say multiple times "it's not like it used to be" and it drives me nuts.

We may not like it, but The transfer portal and NIL are now a part of college basketball, and it is literally CBJ's job to figure it out!
