Ben Johnson is a Disaster

I think Johnson got the most out of Jamison Battle who transfered in from George Washington University.

Both Battle and Garcia were scoreless in the first half.

The future is the freshmen still learning, not the transfer from George Washington.

I really like Battle so it pains me to say that.

Maybe his back hindered him.

The future is the youth.
Didja happen to catch Purdue's freshmen?

The future is our youth getting pounded by other team's youth.

Battle only has 1 less year of eligibility remaining than Ben's first freshman class. Garcia has just as much eligibility remaining as Ben's first freshman class.

Honest question, what in terms of wins/losses would be considered a failure for you next year?

All these hot takes. Too funny. Little Ricky gets eight years and leaves a dumpster fire. Ben comes in to nothing and he gets a year and a couple months. PJ comes into a roster that has the core of his 2019 success already in place, ends 2017 with two historical shutout losses and gets a whole different response from GH. I guess Ben didn't get a year zero. 🤔

It's almost like having a track record of success buys you a little longer leash.

Most folks wanted Ricky gone sooner and if that was a dumpster fire, I'm not quite sure what this is (the inside of the sun?).

No one gets a year zero, it was dumb when PJ said it and it's dumb now.

Could you imagine getting a sales job and saying that the previous rep sold out the territory, it is now a dumpster fire…year 1 should really be year 0…

That is 100% in many cases, but you don’t say that part out loud and build your case upon that. You just become known as a crappy rep who can’t sell (or in this case, Coach)

Ben came into plenty, they all left after he was hired. 85% of 2019's roster was recruited by PJ. Those historical shutouts came in year one, because nothing was left behind on offense. Not only did BJ have a historically bad team last year, he has an even worse one in year 2. PJ beat Wisconsin and won a bowl game in year 2, or 'year 1'.

This is one of the worst B1G basketball teams I've ever seen. I guess that's 'too funny' too in year 2, or 'year 1'.

Tonight was ugly and the Gophers may have stayed within 10-15 if they had shot a bit better, but they're outmanned so badly. And let's also consider that Purdue's freshmen class is one of the best in the country-on their team they have about 5-6 Mr Basketballs from Indiana. The Gophers have a decent freshmen class, but they are not in the league of Purdue. Let's see if they improve, that's what we're hoping to see.

Yeah, the year zero was to make a point. Many out here were fine with that BS. Gophs played the #3 ranked team in the nation, that probably is the best in the nation, that has a 7'4" multigenerational college phenomenon. Ben basically had what, one viable roster player last year when he arrived, and has mostly a new roster again this year because he has to cobble together a roster last year?

I mean Coyle essentially gave him 2 year zeros and gave PJ one as well. He'll start paying attention next year

You can make a reasonable argument that he deserves more time. I certainly would agree with you. But why do people continue to make excuses for the roster HE created? The cupboard wasn't bare when he arrived. Most of the players went into the portal after he was hired. That's his responsibility. Then he chose to fill the roster with one year players. That's also his responsibility. Again....I'm not advocating for his dismissal a year and a half in, but can we at least speak honestly about the roster?

You seriously think Purdue is the best in the nation? The Big 10 is going to get run out the NCAA as usual.

I defended both! Bob criticized both. You and GWG are split on opposite sides. C'mon people be consistent. Understanding circumstances is an important part of being objective.

Eh Coyle hired a coach with no experience knowing the team essentially quit on the prior coach and no desire to stay together. Ben decided to retain 0 coaches and start over. Don't think the AD cared about the recoeds about the last 2 years and neither will I.

Such a mismatch with that Edey kid, man. Damn is he a load in the post, and we have literally no one capable of hanging with him, but it's not like many others do either. He is an absolute beast.

But yeah, this game sucked. I was very disappointed we got rolled so badly at home. One step up, two steps back, and so it goes.

It's almost like we are 4 separate people.

I have been consistent. The football circumstances PJ inherited were far worse than BJ in basketball. You could see what PJ was building his first 3 weeks on the job. He's the best roster manager I've seen for football, and there is always depth at every position.

BJ has been the opposite. Last year's roster didn't make sense, and this year's makes even less sense. There's no offense or defensive plan on top of a poorly constructed roster. The results on the court have been horrific. The difference between the two coaches is night and day.

Years can exist and not matter in terms of wins and losses.
Sure but they are still years in the development of the program.

I've heard people not count Thiam or Thompson as his recruits because they are part of year zero. I kind of don't think Ben's year 1 class is going to turn out like PJ's year 1 class.

Bad comparison. This is Ben's true year 0. Hopefully this year's freshman will help turn the program around.

Comparing Ben's first year to PJ's first year was a bad comparison? You can't make this stuff up.

So Ben's SECOND year is now year zero? LOL.
Absolutely Coyle hired a coach with no coaching experience with a insane transfer portal coming to life. He knew he was punting on the next couple years.

Just recalling where poster's sided on this argument in similar situations in 2017/2018 and 2022/2023.
But you're not personally consistent. For Ben, you consider Year 2 to be Year Zero (Year 1 is a figment of our imagination because even the recruiting didn't count) and with PJ you consider Year 1 to be Year Zero.

If PJ was hired when the transfer portal was running out of control (with NCAA granting immediate eligibility) with the scandal he inherited, I would have done the same thing.
