I would agree. No one on this board knows B10 basketball better than BJ. Does not mean he will be a winning coach, but he knows WAY more than anyone here.Maybe it also shows that some of our “best & brightest minds” don’t know nearly as much as a coach who played D1 hoops, was an assistant for numerous years before being hired to coach the Gophers?
TJ also went 7-11 in conference play last year. Had the good fortune of playing LSU after Wade got fired and Wisconsin minus Johnny Davisi certainly don't. No clue why the U has to hire Kill and lose to the Dakotas before getting to mediocre and no clue why they hire CBJ hoping he can build something - while other programs like ISU can hire TJ and go from 2 wins to the sweet 16
i certainly don't. No clue why the U has to hire Kill and lose to the Dakotas before getting to mediocre and no clue why they hire CBJ hoping he can build something - while other programs like ISU can hire TJ and go from 2 wins to the sweet 16

indeed. I'm definitely in the camp that thinks having some prior success in a position is a better indicator of future probable success than having no experience. When Pitino was hired some on the board took issue with me saying he was a half baked coach - only one year as a HC so a tough learning curve. CBJ has even a steeper hill to climb. Just as we see with players, there is a hockey stick learning curve for coaching too.You should get a hold of Coyle and tell him about your great plan to win by hiring Otzelberger then.
Agreed, although while Otz had success at Brookings. I know there was a contingent of their fans who were happy to see him go. Despite having the best job in the Mountain West he never really got UNLV going, but like Ben here think Otz had been an assistant in Ames had history there and sometimes you get the right mix and the right circumstances like last season. He's had some nice wins on the recruiting trail as well. But a guy like Gabe who can shut down the other teams best scorer, it really frees up your other players as well when you can count on 32 minutes of all world defense a nightindeed. Never said I agreed with it, always thought it was interesting. Lot of complaints were over team defense and that Otz just rode Nagy coat tails and his mediocre record at UNLV made them louder. Although I would imagine his Iowa State success would shut those same people upI disagree with that, and if there were a few, they are not very smart fans.

nothing about this is deterministic, its all probabilistic. I hope CBJ becomes the greatest college bball coach ever, there's just no data yet to support that hope. I stepped onto the U in 1976. frankly, there's little data that any bball coach could sustain success at the U, even experienced ones. add to this that CBJ is 42, so if he is a bball coaching prodigy then a lot of smart bball people have passed on him over the years. I'm hoping for good, but prepared for several years of weakling wednesdaysBut experience doesn't determine success.

Because of the current record as HC.We have no idea at this point. So why are people already drawing conclusions?
Because of the current record as HC.

I know I know losing is winning. Most posters don't care about premature conclusions drawn by one of the board clowns.
Don’t forget 7th ranked recruiting class in the big10 next year and 9th for our freshmen class this year (according to 247sports)I know I know losing is winning.
All depends on how you look at it. Our average recruit ranking is 3rd with 247 if you go by recruit average. We get punished by only having two. Similar to when Pitino had his five person class with Ihnen and that group and were ranked top half in the conference but the recruit average was low. Just depends on what you value in rankingsDon’t forget 7th ranked recruiting class in the big10 next year and 9th for our freshmen class this year (according to 247sports)
We can all be pretty sure that Wet Blanket is going to value whatever ranking makes the Gophers look the worst. All depends on how you look at it. Like I said earlier. It’s literally his user name so I expect nothing lessWe can all be pretty sure that Wet Blanket is going to value whatever ranking makes the Gophers look the worst.
How do you know this? Otz rubbed quite a few the wrong way. Hence why he was applying all over to get out of there. He won, but he didn’t really buy into SDSU being a special place. That matters there. They want someone who values them. Those fans were in the very slim minority.
Really impressed how Otz has done defensively at ISU vs his other stops and considering who he came up under (McDermott and Hoiberg).Never said I agreed with it, always thought it was interesting. yep...always nice when trolls tell you who they are right up front.Like I said earlier. It’s literally his user name so I expect nothing less
Do you think NIL has anything to do with who they are getting?Really impressed how Otz has done defensively at ISU vs his other stops and considering who he came up under (McDermott and Hoiberg).
Don’t think it hurts lol. Think it kept Hunter his freshman year and allowed them to stay in it with Billew. They have some good donors there.Do you think NIL has anything to do with who they are getting?

The ones I know liked Nagy and wanted him to be a lifer like Johnston. They didn’t like Otz as much because they knew he wasn’t staying like you mentioned. Just goes to show different wants/values from different people. Same folks also didn’t like him defensively and didn’t think it was sustainable to win there with the way he was going.Because I have a lot of connections to that program. Everyone I knew was realistic that he wasn't going to be there long term and would likely end up at Iowa St either directly from SDSU or stopping somewhere else first. I don't know anyone who was happy to see him go, or expected him to be there long term. More people were ready to see Nagy go.
