Ben Johnson is a Disaster

I've seen this since he took the job. He's gotta stand up for his guys more 100%. That's just part of the game at this level of basketball. You've gotta dig into the refs here and there to keep 'em honest. Really bothers me he doesn't do this.
He is diffident!

Johnson is not a disaster. Pitino's last season when his kids quit on him was a disaster.

Yet they still beat Nebraska at home by 18, 24th ranked Purdue at home, and had a number of close losses all in February.

Maybe we need some kids to 'quit' on BJ like that to see some better results.

Well, that was different.

Go talk to Mark Coyle and let us know.
The proof is in the facts: Johnson was hired before a highly qualified candidate like Smith even had the opportunity to lay out his vision for the program. If you’re a serious AD you turn over every rock to find the best candidate. What was the hurry? Nobody else was going to hire Ben Johnson.

While I agree with the premise of checking with more candidates (especially Smith as he was my favorite), there definitely was a reason to rush. It was known the roster was going to need a full turnover and many/most were leaving. Want to get a new coach quickly. It’s why most of the P5 hires happen really quick in March unless they are hiring a coach whose team is still playing.

The fact is that the AD chose Ben Johnson. The AD is under no obligation to interview more people or to explain his rationale for his choice. What you are doing is entirely speculative and born out of frustration because the team you want to win every game is doing just the opposite. The AD chose an inexperienced coach for the women's basketball team as well. He is letting her grow into the job. The AD is doing the same with the men's basketball coach. These are the facts. Write to the AD and complain about his tactics if you must complain. Stop attending and watching games if you must.

The constant droning of whiners here at the GH is fascinating to me. You all are like the uncle whom everyone dreads coming over for Christmas.

You are talking straight from your arse. Look, I laud your optimism and support for the coach. I like Ben. Let's keep it real though.

You have no idea who made the final decision on this hire. We do know that Gabel was all over this one as Coyle admitted. The AD, assuming he made the decision, is obligated to the customers- who are now showing up in small numbers.

Of course he isn't, but he also isn't exempt from criticism for how he handles hiring folks.

Are you new to following sports? Fans complaining on message boards, at bars, on sports talk shows is a pretty common thing. You seem to be uncomfortably sensitive about that criticism being aimed at the Ben Johnson hire. If you go to any other message board it's filled with people who are blindly supportive of their team, people who are way too overly critical, and some folks who are in the middle.

If this board's reaction to Ben Johnson is fascinating to you then you are brand new to following sports.

Bolded: maybe the question should be directed at Gable and the regents??

Coyle chose Johnson. Fact.

There are a lot of conspiracy theorists here on this thread.

Right. He chose Ben Johnson. Fact.
If a guy puts a gun to my head- I'm going to choose to give him my wallet. But look, neither of us know for sure if Coyle would have chosen him had it not been for Gabel- I have already said I don't know. Gabel is my assessment of who made the decision because of the things that were said at the time the deal was announced.
You don't know what Coyle would have done were it not for Gabel.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist like you. Coyle hired Johnson. Fact.

New Gopher hoops coach is Black and a native son

March 22, 2021 - by Charles Hallman

We unabashedly asked Minnesota AD Mark Coyle a couple of weeks ago during a Zoom media call if he would seriously consider Black candidates for the vacant Gopher MBB coaching job. Minnesota historically has been one of the Big Ten’s Whitest schools—there is no Black HC among its men’s and women’s sports. If a Black were hired, this would be the first under Coyle.
“Charles, I can tell you that [University] President Gable, myself and the university are committed to diversity, and we’re committed to having a very diverse pool of candidates we want to look at. We want to cast a very wide net that we can find the next great leader for our basketball program,” Coyle pledged. “I can assure you Charles, we will have a diverse pool of candidates.”

But Gabel’s a woman!!! 😧
