All Things 2022-2023 Minnesota Twins Off-Season Thread

Has a Boras client ever not waited until Free Agency to sign? Maybe Strasburg.

I can comfortably say there was a 99.99% chance Correa was going to wait until at least December to sign anything (barring injury), regardless of what was being offered.

Moving to 3B is really puzzling, unless whatever was discovered in the physical may limit his effectiveness at SS.
Or he’s good friends with Lindor, both from, PR.

And/Or he wants to win at least one more ring and believes with good cause that Cohen and the Mets! Give him the best chance

And/Or he sees that it will extend his career and effective’s ala Ripken/A-Rod

Excellent article below where Boras basically calls the Giants BS out as a simple excuse, the medical stuff/reports are well known ahead of time in these types of deals, I.e. due diligence provided by the agents ahead of time-sounded to me like the Giants wussed out and Boras simply called Cohen as he knew of his interest before the Giant signing - a few hours later, Correra is a Met.
Lesson being don’t order the seafood if you have to ask what the MP is.

That is 100% true the giants ownership wanted nothing to do with that contract.

MLB Trade Rumors.....I site I respect for their content......predicted nine years and $288 million at the end of the year for Correa. If the Twins were in the $280-$285 range, that isn't an illegitimate offer. The market was much higher than expected once Turner and Bogaerts signed. I certainly don't blame the Twins for not being north of $300 million back in June. In fact, I'm not even sure this is the right delegation of resources regardless.

That doesn't excuse them for not spending the money that they were willing to spend on Correa.
They waited out the Correa market knowing they were low on what other teams were offering. By the time the Correa market was over there was no one any good to spend the money on. Not saying they should have signed Correa or not but if you’re gonna play in the pool you better be willing to overspend. Now they are left paying Joey Gallo $11million just so they can trade Kepler for some unknown reason. Oh and don’t forget $32 million for a part time 32 year old catcher. I mean if that doesn’t tickle your swimsuit region what does.

I fairness to mlb trade rumors everyone knew he wanted more money than Lindor so why would he settle for less. Plus a 9 year contract he’s giving up the back end money as this is his last contract of this career as no one is going to sign him at the end of 9 years.

MLB Trade Rumors ended up on the low side of most of the contracts signed. The market was certainly more robust than it has been the last few years.

I guess I'm not going to rip the Twins too much for not signing this deal. There are only a few teams in baseball willing to throw three or four years of wasted money to sign a deal like this. It's unlikely any of these SS are worth the money invested after the first five or six years. Just crazy spending by the Mets and a few others. It was really interesting to see the White Sox contract for Benintendi was the highest contract they had every signed and that was for only $75 million, not exactly a small market team. The economics of baseball are still ridiculously flawed.

I do believe the Twins thought they had Correa. The trade of Urshela made no sense at the time they made it unless it was part of a series of moves which included Correa. That wasn't a particularly high end prospect they received in return.

That’s the thing with free agency, you always have to overspend. It only takes one team to be stupid and there you go.

I also think you are correct that the twins thought they made a “good enough” offer to sign Correa. The thing is reports started coming out that teams were offering $30-40 million over what they offered and the twins bumped their offer $5million.

I also agree could careless less if they signed Correa, my complaint is waiting out the market knowing you have the worst offer in play. At their offer they were never going to sign him so move on and try to improve the other countless positions of need right away rather than having to go dumpster diving again this off season.

Word is The Sox are gonna shop Hendrix in a Jan trade; Mets are one of the likely suitors - THANKS SANTA STEVE

By the time it’s all said and done Boras and Correa will be begging the twins for the 9 years and $285 million.

Did he even take a physical before he signed with the Twins?
Or was the Twins medical staff so incompetent that they missed something again?

Yes, according to the article -

Maybe this explains why the Twins didn’t want to go as long-term as SF and NYM?

13 years is just insane. A kid entering kindergarten will graduate high school during that contract

Impossible to know all the conversations that may or may not be happening, but probably fair to say much of their offseason was dictated by the signing of Correa (yay or nay). However, I agree with your post here. Not all that impressed with their offseason to this point.

What amazes me is the entire staff is back for 2023 except for the trainer. What has Pete Maki done with the pitching staff to show you he is ready for a MLB job? Is it the way he handles the iPad during meetings and games. I just don’t get this front office. There were basically no repercussions for last years melt down. They are gonna lose Correa and trade Kepler to to replaced by Farmer and Galo. Run it all back, hope people are healthy, and hope they can win 90 games to win the division.

Maki staying as pitching coach is inexplicable.

It only took 86 Wins to get an AL Wild Card last year (Rays). Just sayin'.

Of course with a more balanced schedule (less games against the AL Central), even getting to 86 is a tougher task in theory.

I understand not wanting to go 12+ years on a Correa, that said not having a backup plan is inexcusable. We got a below average player in Gallo, a very very average player in Vasquez and 0 pitching. This team is going to end up like 70-92.
