Ben Johnson is a Disaster

The temptation is to dismiss DJ because he's young and black and coaches at a lower level. But when I listen to him talk, the guy knows his stuff. When he describes his offense and it's origins and his tactical influences...let's just say I've never heard Ben talk that articulately about strategy or approach to the game. Instead we get something about grit at his introductory press conference. If you found that lacking, you're not alone...and you'd be right. It was a nothing burger.

The video pieces I saw of Craig Smith were convincing, especially the segments taken at his practices. That guy has a method and is a splendid teacher. I've learned to trust my eyes and ears and horse sense.

Gerry Faust ran a football factory. They had the best players...which they had at Notre Dame, too, so he didn't completely fall flat on his face there. But it's another thing completely to coach a limited squad up. That's what you look for. That's this year's Utes.

Thought exercise: was it ridiculous when the Gophers hired Doug Woog from the high school level? I never heard him compared to Gerry Faust; maybe he was and I missed it. I don't think it was the best hire, but it wasn't the worst, either.
Damian Johnson is not currently and probably never will be ready for a Big Ten assistant job, let alone head coach. It has nothing to do with him being young and black, it has to do with him not being good enough. You pimping him here is embarrassing for him and for you.

Did I miss something, or why are you bringing up Craig Smith? Are you comparing him to Damian Johnson? He's almost old enough to be his dad and has had a very successful career in college. He would've been a home run hire here and was the beyond obvious choice.

Imagine if Ben Johnson lost at home to Sam Houston State in his 2nd year coaching.

Such a good coach he went 11-20 and 4-16 in his 1st year in the Pac 12.

You should really stop talking in absolutes you sound like a dumbass (see football vs Wisconsin). I'm sure Craig will go something like 6-14 again this year. I'm sure his first two classes which averaged 95 will turn the program around though.

Notorious Damian Johnson expert dpodoll68. What are Damian Johnson's strengths and weaknesses as a coach? Why will he never be good enough to coach as an assistant in the B1G?

That's not what I said, you stupid bastard. Learn to read.

His main weakness is that he's almost 37 and still coaching in high school.

What an awful coach. Can't believe he was coaching high school until he was almost 40. Must have turned out to be a failure.

Not even saying Damian is a good or bad coach but come up with some better rationalization doll.

Imagine if Ben Johnson had a Gophers team ranked 90 spots lower than Sam Houston State on Ken Pom in his second season…

Oh wait, he does.
Would love to play them so we can pick up another low major win. Embarrassing losing to a low major by double digits at home.

Except they’re likely the best team in their conference and an NCAA tournament team. They also have a win over Oklahoma. It’s far more embarrassing to get blown out by 16 by a last place DePaul team on your home court.

Disagree low major vs high major without your best player.

Gophers are hitting their stride now and will soon be 2-2 in the B1G. I look forward to bumping this thread after every Gopher win and every other 2nd year coach embarrassing loss.

They have to win 1 game first to have the opportunity to win a second…you understand that right…

Jared Vanderbilt is a starter and he can’t shoot for $hit. You clearly don’t pay attention to the NBA.
Jarred Vanderbilt--40% from 3pt this year, 63.2% 2pt. He is also one of the best 1-5 defenders in the entire NBA. CLEARLY you don't watch the NBA.....

The only comparison between Ben Johnson and Doug Woog you can make is they are both stubborn.

Woof was a great hockey coach who handcuffed himself by only signing Minnesota players. Which prevented him from winning the NCAA. Remember how quickly that changed when the new coach broadened his recruiting to include a little diversity.

Ben is trying to put slow players in a man to man in situations where the 5 guys we would put on the floor would lose a 1 on 1 match to the guy they are guarding and he doesn’t get them to hustle enough to help each other.

Not to go off on a tangent, but didn't Mariucci originate the custom of Minnesota-only players? I can't claim to be an authority, but I think it might have originated as a preference for Minnesota players and devolved into a rigid doctrine that people like Woog didn't feel he had the latitude to deviate from.

Lou Nanne says hi.

Once again, you've added a much needed ray of sunshine to this board.
Some dipshit makes up nonsense about me and I'm supposed to just take it? Not gonna happen.

Note that he still hasn't made an attempt to substantiate his fiction despite multiple subsequent posts.

I made up your own post? You're literally a moron, I feel bad for you.

Holy balls.

First of all, the post that Bad quoted was in regard to your comment about something you made up that I said about "football vs. Wisconsin". Try to keep up - difficult with limited brainpower, I know.

Secondly, please point out where in that post I said "he['ll] never be good enough to coach as an assistant in the B1G." Here's a free hint - peruse the word "probably."

You are not bright. But it's a Friday and it's fun playing with the challenged, particularly a total dipshit who has the balls to call me a "moron" when he can barely read and certainly can't follow an argument that he himself is feebly attempting to make.
