Best hire on paper you could make.
I think the spread and 4-2-5 will be interesting to watch and see if they can transition without losing their program identity

Heard on WI radio that they have an offer to him already but that doesn't mean he's going to take it. If he does, I will be surprised, especially with the Buckeye alum in a tizzy right now. Will be interesting. I think there's a process involved to get the hire approved, like when they went after Chryst.

Yeah. Badgers will lose a lot of current players and recruits.

But Cincy has a lot of good commitments. Let’s hope Fickell can’t move them with him. Those guys thought they would be playing in the Big 12.

I know nothing about Cincy’s commits, but would have to assume the difference in academic standards will stop some from following.

Yeah on the WI radio station they said Leonard wouldn't care is he wasn't the first choice. Not totally sure I buy it. If Fickell does bite, I think he'd try to keep Jim, but he already makes NFL coordinator $$ so not sure they could pay him much more.

I don’t think a 4-2-5 guy who calls his own defense keeps a 3-4 guy around as DC
 



What I’ll be curious about is if Fickell left UW for OSU in a year or two:
1. Would UW try to bring back Leonhard?
2. Would Leonhard say yes?

I was told by a poster out here that he calls Barry several times weekly to clear stuff, and Barry is really the one making the decisions, like canning Chryst...:rolleyes:
 

For those calling this a great hire, it probably is. They got a guy who had an undefeated season at a G5 school.

So did Minnesota. So did Nebraska (and he failed). Iowa's coach has had an undefeated Big Ten season. Northwestern has a guy who won the West at...Northwestern. Illinois has a coach who has won the Big Ten before, and before that they had a guy who had coached in a Super Bowl.

My point is that this is the Big Ten. All these jobs should go to proven and successful coaches. These all should feel like teams raising the bar, but they are actually just meeting it.

its a great hire on paper. No guarantee of success. Huge identity shift coming for the badgers schematically.

He went 9-3 in the American with one of the more talented rosters this year so I’m not sure he is a lock to win 10+ every year with a roster equal to his peers
 


The local beat writers for WI are pissed because the news was leaked to national media before they heard about it.
The Athletic had it up about 10 this AM when I got their e-mail.
The WI AD made a risky decision because given how Leonard was loved, Leonard would have had a very long leach and the AD knew this move to Fickell would be very disruptive and cause a lot of ill will among WI die-hard fans.
The dry rot the Chryst caused in the program had to be cut out.
All I know about Fickell is that he had multiple offers including the NFL over the last few years so a lot of ADs looked hard at him, including recently NE, and were turned down.
It is going to be an interesting off-season for the WI program and WI fans.
I think WI was trending to be a volleyball school but now will be trending up on FB.
The hire will be good for the BIG if more schools can compete for the championship.

Yeah. And big ten money might not come if you are a 7-10 win program in the big 12 instead of a 9-12 win program in the American

The other part of this is Wisconsin will have to hope Fickell sticks around for awhile as it will more than likely be a complete rebuild. Many players will probably be upset with how this was handled.

There is no such thing.

As a Gopher fan, I would have preferred if they Leonhard got the job. So it would be a good hire for them. It'll be interesting to see how loyal Fickell would be if the big guns came calling though.

I don’t know. I attended a UW Volleyball game earlier this year where they set an NCAA record for attendance at a non-playoff game. I couldn’t believe how many people attended a VB game (I was given free tix during a visit).

The Big Ten schools are ALL big guns. This is becoming more true with each passing year.

It's very rare for a coach to leave a Big Ten job, especially for another college. Lots of rumors but who's actually done it? Wisconsin (Bielema, Andersen) seems to be the only program that's had much of it in recent memory.
 

Fickell is a good hire. Ohio recruiting pipeline. I would assume the identity of the Badger football program is about to change.
 

Fickell going to becky is the last thing I wanted. They will improve cuz becky is soft.
 

Things just got exponentially tougher for the Gophers and the B1G if it is true that Bucky hired Fickell.
