I've never been a D2/NSIC fan, so I have no idea. But, has Concordia-St. Paul ever been competitive? Do they have any football tradition at all? Seems like they should have a decent chance to be/have been a solid program, as the lone Twin Cities non-D1 program (pre-UST) that could offer any form of scholarships, but I don't recall them ever being much.

In the NSIC era, only in the early 2000s. They won co-NSIC championships in 2003 and 2005, getting ranked in the top 25 around that time and getting some Mineral Water Bowl berths.

Since 2010, they've had three winning seasons, two of which being 6-5. Not sure why they're not able to put it together. For whatever reason their volleyball program can attract great student athletes, though, they've won nine national championships.

In other NSIC news, the Dragons finally managed to get back in the win column. It was a struggle to open the season, they played USF, Augie, Winona and UMD, who have a combined record of 19-5. The win was against winless Minot State, but it still felt great to stop the losing streak, especially at Nemzek on homecoming.

Next up is the Dragons' chief rival, Bemidji State. Since 2012, Dragons have gone 4-5 against the Beavers in the battle for the Axe trophy. They've played since 1929 and the Dragons lead the Beavers all time 47-37-3. Bemidji State is really good this year but I'm hoping MSUM can pull off some rivalry game magic.

UST still doesn't offer football scholarships. They could really be included in this thread as they are D1 in name only.

Did a quick Wikipedia check, looks like in the FCS playoffs a Pioneer League team has made it past the first round twice since 2013 and that was San Diego, then got stomped both times by NDSU.

Carleton Knights, 6-0 for the first time since 1992.

and now Carleton hits the toughest part of the schedule -
at Concordia
at Gustavus
at St. John's

if they can beat Concordia and Gustavus, the St. John's game would be for the Division title and a possible game against Bethel in "Championship Week."

FYI: for the last week of the regular season, the MIAC will match teams from the Northwoods Division against the Skyline Division, based on divisional records only: 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2 and so forth.
the winner of the 1 vs 1 game will receive the automatic qualifier for the D3 Playoffs.

I think a road win for the Knights against either the Cobbers or Gusties would set up the Johnnie's game for the Division championship.

If Gustavus loses to St John's this week, even if Carleton loses the next 2 weeks, that final game would still be for the Division crown. A win in Collegeville would give them 2 Ls each with a Head-to-Head tie breaker advantage.

As an MSU-Moorhead alum, it's been a really frustrating season. Last year, the Dragons finished with a losing record, 5-6, but at least the losses were close, nearly all of them were within a touchdown. This year, most of the losses have been blowouts.

It seems like the COVID year off really impacted the program. From 2015-2019, the Dragons had a winning season four out of five times, earned a Mineral Water Bowl berth and their only losing season was 5-6.

It seemed like the team was on solid ground and at the same level with Bemidji, Northern, Winona and Wayne. Now it seems like they're sliding back, which is really unfortunate. Also, it really makes a Saturday suck when both the Gophers and the Dragons lose. Hoping for better results next week.

Gustavus - St. John's is the only game that matches two teams with winning records.
Carleton at Concordia is the cross-division game this week.

Would be interesting to see how those teams do in the DII or DIII playoffs.
Not that it's exactly a great program, but Drake lost earlier this year to Missouri S&T, a DII program, they beat MSU Moorhead a couple years ago in the Mineral Water Bowl. I think it shows that the better DII squads can win against the lower end of FCS.

I remember watching the DII playoffs last year, and they were playing at a level that looked close to the FCS.

With the victory, the Dragons held on to the Paddle trophy for another year. The trophy was developed by the student governments when Mary joined the NSIC. It was based on Mary being near the Missouri River and MSUM close to the Red River. The series is now tied, 8-8.

Mac makes the quick trip up Snelling to face off against Hamline in the battle to not finish last in the MIAC.

A little farther up Snelling this evening, Minnesota-Morris can clinch a tie for the UMAC title with a win at Northwestern. Morris lost to both Mac and Hamline in September, so today could end with proof that the entire MIAC is above the UMAC.

(The UMAC schools would still whomp Eden Prairie.)

I'm not exactly sure what the point is of ranking teams that can't play in the postseason, like UST, Jackson St., and Princeton.

I'm not exactly sure what the point is of ranking teams that can't play in the postseason, like UST, Jackson St., and Princeton.
Well, I feel like the rankings in general are just to keep track of the best teams that season, whether or not they are in the postseason or not. They're separate from the selection process for the actual playoffs, and instead is just a look into how teams possibly compare to their counterparts.

It's happened at the FBS level, too. The 1994 Auburn team finished at No. 9 in the AP with a 9-1-1 record, while 2012 Ohio State went 12-0 and finished at No. 3. That was despite being ineligible for post season play.

Obviously those are different circumstances, but if I'm a voter in a poll at the end of the season and putting my ranking together, I'd feel compelled to include, say, an undefeated Ivy League school or a good HBCU team that wins the Celebration Bowl.

It's kind of how in college hockey there's both the normal weekly rankings and the pairwise format, with the latter having more of an impact on the playoffs.
