All Things Nolan Winter Recruitment Thread (Class of 2023, Gophers Offered, Son of Trevor)

It is apparent that Nolan did not grow up a Gopher fan. He must have heard so much positive smck about the Gophers from his parents that he wanted to chart his own course to be different. There is no way that a Gopher fan would include the most hated rival in a final 2 with the home school.

A know a family of Florida State Seminole fans down where my dad lives. They do family photos each Christmas in their jerseys. Of course, one boy had to be different and wears Gator gear... every year!

At this point, I almost don't care if Nolan commits or not. His apparent apathy and lack of commitment to the rivalry makes me wonder about his competitiveness, drive, and desire.
He 100% did grow up a Gopher fan, stop the nonsense.

Yeah he’s at Williams and Huntington all the time. Fandom doesn’t always equal college choice. Gotta find what they think is the best spot for his career. I still think he ends up here.

This is not a serious post right?

Interesting. I think its a sign of maturity. I would feel the same personally as you. However, when I’m in other parts of the country I always like to see Badger fans. I like the rivalry. That’s what makes being a fan fun.

I actually didn't know that he stuck around for that long. Most of those seasons he didn't start hardly any games.

Just let the kid and his parents make a decision. In the end, it's their decision and I wish them the best. Likewise, I believe 100% in what the Gopher's are trying to build, that future is heading in the right direction. Hopefully, it includes Nolan... if not I am guessing both the Gophers and Badgers will move forward with the next guy up.

Just looked, he made $42 million in his 9-year NBA career.

Unathletic white bigs is Wisconsin's trademark. 3 per year for 20 years...out of 60, ONE from 15 years ago made the NBA as a reserve...and you guys praise it as something special.

I couldn't care less if Wisconsin keeps their trademark. I'm not worried about it. Our issues are our own.

I'm not sure how having a hard time deciding between two schools and programs you really like that are rivals makes Winter apathetic and not committed. Every kid is different and has a different way of looking at things, and by all accounts he's a great kid. Because he doesn't share your intense feelings about the Badgers makes him neither apathetic nor uncommitted. Give the kid a break.

And made the Sweet 16 10 times in the years they did that. Wierd, when you focus on playing winning basketball, and not on what your players look like, good things can happen.

I perhaps agree with your sentiments about what we need to do. However, give them their due. They did a fine job.

Sam Dekker

I bet it sucked having those guys. Glad such horrible thing didn’t happen here. Not to mention the useful guys that didn’t make the NBA.

As serious as can be. Nolan has had plenty of other solid D-1 offers to mull over. The U and the Skunks were not the only offers. A fan would just not have a final 2 of their favorite team and the favorite team's rival. If a fan were forced to choose from only these 2 because they were the only offers, then it is worth mulling over.

Nolan may have many reasons for leaning to WI but he has had months to go through the pros and cons. There haven't been any exciting revelations or surprises. I do not know Nolan but have crossed paths with Trevor and Heidi. Whittling your choices to these 2 teams reeks of not wanting to disappoint parents.

I'm not giving Nolan a hard time. Just pointing out that a Gopher fan would not have a final 2 of the home team and the most hated rival under his circumstances and the current roster of each team. He had plenty of solid offers to consider.

He may be a great kid but I am only saying that he isn't a diehard Gopher fan. I do not want a kid on the Gophers from MN who would actually consider WI. I want a kid who wants to get up for that game and knock the snot out of them... not a kid that looks across and says, "I really like Gard."

I don't want to emulate WI. I want Ben to get guys like Battle, Garcia, Christie, Evans, Willis, etc. I don't really want a 7-footer who hangs out on the perimeter.

You can't make it up...I spent 10 minutes combing my way through the pages trying to figure out who the guy was that made $42 million dollars?
Of course when I found out who they were talking about I said...I dunno? Really?
So, I had to look that up.... turns out Jon Leuer has actually made closer to $60 million dollars just in salary from the NBA over his career. Shut the front door!
Contracts
I guess, way to go Jon Leuer! That is remarkable! I wonder if Wisconsin uses that in their recruiting pitch?

You must not like Garcia then or modern basketball then. Wisconsins big also don’t just hang out on the perimeter. Happ, Potter, and Kaminsky didn’t. Crowl doesn’t either.

What other options are close to home and fit his playing style and wants academically. This is an adult decision and you have to take the best opportunity, not which team you rooted for. Brad Davison, Jordan Taylor, and plenty of other MN kids grew up a big gophers fan too. Not every persons diehard fandom equates to hatred of their rivals. It’s like a person who drinks Caribou religiously, but if Starbucks comes with a better job offer and fit, you take it.

This is just nonsense. Probably a reason you're a die-hard instead of an athlete. He is thinking about what will be best for his future not some fandom lens

Yeah. Who wouldnt prefer the Gophers record over the past 2 decades to the Badgers?

Honest to god, your takes are either demonstrably wrong, ridiculous, or both.

I'm not an athlete anymore due to a long history of injuries. There is absolutely no reason that his future will be any less by choosing his favorite team over the skunks unless the Gophers are going on probation or dissolving the team.

Its not like one team runs the Princeton offense to the tune of 50 ppg while the other is Loyola Marymount scoring 120+ ppg.

He's not going to be behind a likely 4 year starter for the Gophers but will see immediate playing time at Sconnie.

The contrasts are just not there.

In fact, he will most certainly have more NIL opportunities here living off his family name.

Winter wins either way. He can go to a team that fits his playing style exactly. Most players today know that their professional careers are going to be based on versatility. In that case, Winter may benefit from going to a team that is a slightly different style so he can broaden his game.

Davison and Taylor also would have fit here just as well but chose the biggest rival. All I know is that WI kids rarely cross the border to MN even when their teams stink and the U is top dog. Their families would disown them! Apparently fandom isn't what it used to be. Sad as that's what makes college sports fun.
