All Things 2022 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

Is he out of the lineup tonight so he can work on his Spanish?
There was talk on Sunday from various people that they would give him the week off due to his knee. This is the new reality with Byron he has terrible chronic knee(s) that will never be right and that’s why he signed the deal he did. I personally feel there is a chance he does not play though the end of his contract due to his issues. Like it or hate it Byron need to talk time off and DH is the reality for the twins and fans.

The game was over the minute they didn't score any more runs in the 5th inning. Kepler is unplayable right now and hitting him 4th is a joke. And Correa's looking at a $10 million paycut if he opts out. Good defensive SS's who hit .250 aren't worth $35 million.

For the people saying the twins don’t get up for big games have you thought maybe they just are not that good. I bet there has not been a single game played against the Yankees or Dodgers in the time frame the couple of posters were taking about where the twins have been favored. You look at the line -up the twins had vs the line-up the dodgers had last night and honestly I think the dodgers got bored or it could have been worse. Just like all the loses to the Yankees, news flash the Yankees have always fielded a better team than the twins.
Of course they aren't that good. Not being good and not getting up for big games are one and the same. If the Twins were in the AL West or AL East they'd be 20 games below .500 this year.

The AL West isn't great. Assume you meant NL West. They'd be below .500 but I'm not sure about 20 games. One advantage to playing a team 19 times is you probably eventually stop wetting yourself.

I was holding on to this as I didn't see it posted previously (my bad if it already was, but Good News can be repeated)

From the article, first Twins winner since Miggy in 2015 and he's the cousin of Hamilton sensation, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

I cannot believe that he made the adjustments needed at the MLB level and not back at Triple A, ala Larnach and AK. I think he has All-Star level potential with his bat and will end up being a fine 3B in the long run. Just think how screwed we'd be without him - so glad he wansn't traded!

July top rookie honors go to Miranda, Strider

Infielder Jose Miranda of the Minnesota Twins has been voted the American League Rookie of the Month for July, and pitcher Spencer Strider of the Atlanta Braves has been voted the National League Rookie of the Month for July.

Miranda earned his first career monthly award and is Minnesota’s first Rookie of the Month winner since his All-Star teammate Miguel Sanó in August 2015. Strider was similarly awarded his first monthly award and is Atlanta’s second consecutive rookie winner, following his teammate Michael Harris II. This marks the first time since Evan Gattis in April-May 2013 that the Braves had consecutive Rookie of the Month winners.

Miranda on Rookie of the Month

The 24-year-old posted a slash line of .353/.405/.603 with 13 runs scored, 24 hits, two doubles, five home runs and 19 RBI over 20 games played.

• Logged three hits in three consecutive games from July 24th-27th, becoming the first Twins rookie to post such a streak since Danny Valencia logged four consecutive three-hit games in July 2010.

• Batted .426 with 20 hits during a 13-game span from July 5th-27th, collecting 10 runs, six extra-base hits and 15 RBI during the hot stretch.

• The Puerto Rico native, who is the cousin of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, clubbed his 10th round-tripper of the season on Sunday against the San Diego Padres

Unfortunately, neither is anyone else they can put in his place. He should just be at the bottom of the lineup.

It’s baseball how do you exactly “get-up” for a game against an opponent? It’s no different then wrestling if the guy across from you is simply better you are gonna lose.

All the other sports your can scheme and game plan to try and stop certain things and emotion plays a lot more in the game. Baseball doesn’t require that much emotion to play and when you pitch / hit well you then have “gotten up” for the game.

Yesterdays game was more exciting for 1 reason. Polonco hit a homer down the right field line with two outs and two on. If that ball had been foul, which it was only a few feet away from being, then it’s still 2-0 dodgers and the twins look lifeless.

I dunno I played baseball into college and having a different mind set when you play a good team vs a bad team is the same as any other sport. Facing a team's ace vs just some guy, going on the road, facing different hitters all contribute to "getting up." Every game and situation being the same and having no emotion is completely false and I'd love to hear what an MLB player or coach would say in response to that haha.

On Buxton, the Twins have indicated that Buxton aggravated the knee during the San Diego series when he jumped to make a catch in center field and landed awkwardly. I saw a clip on line, and after he comes down to the ground, he sits down, winces and grabs his right knee.

since then there was been more swelling and irritation. Sounds like, short of a surgical procedure to "scrape" the inflamed tendon, the only other option is rest - meaning he doesn't play.

otherwise, with Correa and Kepler slumping, and so many people out of the lineup with injuries, this just isn't a very good lineup right now. they basically have three guys you can count on - Arraez, Miranda and Polanco. after that, it ain't pretty.

if I had to bet my own money, I don't think they make the playoffs, unless they get healthy in a hurry or the starting pitching gets a LOT better.

I couldn't agree more. My buddy and I had this conversation last night. Some teams have that "how are we going to win" mentality and some have the "how are we going to lose" mentality. Some teams just don't have the ability to come back from a deficit or lose focus when they blow a lead. It happens at every level. You can see it quite clearly in adult rec sports. The winning teams just KNOW they are going to win. You can see the losing teams unravel when bad things happen.

Major league players are human too. Chemistry isn't the most important thing - obviously athletic ability is. But there's a difference between great individual athletes and teams that know how to win with great athletes.

Tigers tried to help the Twins with a bottom of the ninth rally to send their game against the Guards into extras but ultimately lost 4-3. Minnesota now a 1.5 behind, 1 in the L column.

Also 1 full game behind the O's and Rays for the last Wild Card.

White Sox fell to 3.5 back getting beat by the Royals.

At least Chicago isn't taking advantage of this. Fangraphs still has the Twins at 50.6% to make the play-offs and 35% to win the division. But they need a streak of decent play to start tomorrow. 16 or 19 against teams with losing records.

I guess my question is how do you know they are not up to play against good teams and aces? Roccco is not exactly a rah-rah guy, at least in front of the cameras and actual locker room access is so limited no one has any idea what it’s like.

My point is baseball is 162 games over like 190 days which means a more even approach and mentality is probably better than in day the nfl where you spend an entire week getting ready for 1 team.

Being 0-18 in the playoffs, .200 winning percentage against the Yankees since 2010, 1-11 vs the Dodgers, tough history vs Houston the last 5 years all contribute to why I think they struggle to get up in big games.

I get your point that they aren't as good as those teams so they're going to lose more than win in those situations. But the twins aren't constantly "bad." They're good enough to beat a lot of other teams but just can't get out of their own way in any ones that seem to be "bigger" games.

I think a lot of this comes down to pitching.

especially in the playoffs, you're starting with your #1 guy against their #1 guy, #2 vs #2 and so forth. and during the 'streak,' most of the time the Twins' pitchers have not been as good as the other team's pitchers. Shoot, the Twins had Randy Dobnak start the 2nd game of a playoff series.

'87 Twins win series - Viola and Blyleven lead the staff.
'91 Twins win series. Jack Morris, Scott Erickson (20 gm winner), Tapani (16-9 w/2.99 ERA)

Toronto playing Cleveland tonight.

Berrios gives up 8 earned runs in 4 innings. His ERA is now 5.61

Mahle looking good with 4 shutout innings so far tonight. He's at 54 pitches though so Rocco likely just phoned down to the bullpen.

Sorry for the tangent, but went to the Saints game last night and apparently the starting pitcher they just called up and is from N St Paul. He pitched a shutout through the 5th? Seemed to do a nice job. No idea what his prospects for being a major leaguer are, just wanted to throw it out.

Carry on

Hope you had fun.

He’s listed as the Twins #11 prospect, per the Twins Top 30 prospect list -

Louie Varland went to Concordia (St. Paul) drafted in round 15 in 2019 and his brother Gus went there and was drafted as well. In 2018 by the Reda.

He’s a legit prospect and was dominating last year in A Ball, so he’s moving through the system rapidly - 8-4 3.18 ERA this year after 10-4 sub 3 ERA last year - he should be on the rotation mix next year.

Not that this is news, but Kepler is unplayable right now at the plate. Make up an injury and send him down to St.Paul for a rehab assignment. At least he’s a good fielder, so it’s not a total wash, but good grief.

Not that anyone needs evidence that 2019 was all because of a juiced ball, but man he went in the toilet after that season. So did the majority of his teammates.
