Val Martin

It’s impossible to know the veracity of these public flamings. Some people will go scorched earth for any real or perceived slight. Twitter bombs, Yelp, whatever.

Is it possible he might not be the type to be amenable to coaching or criticism, teaching, competition or acceptance of loss. What coach or employer would want this guy in their organization if they find these types of tweets?

The timing seems really weird. He kept his mouth shut for 8 months, then all of a sudden decides to open up?

Yeah, who knows what prompted him to lash out now. At this point the whole thing is much ado about nothing though. Coaches have big personalities, players have big personalities, there are going to be clashes.

Val didn't get the playing time he expected here so he is lashing out. Had he gotten the playing time he expected you can bet he would have nothing but good things to say about the U. Funny how things like that work in athletics.

BSF seems to disagree with Val and if you know BSF then you know that means something. Fleck is aces in my book.

Not how to handle things IMHO.

Anyway, this is about all I could decipher from reading his Tweets:

💄 aldf z kshf lsjf have 😭😭 vkfksrt 🎩🎩 vblf ffd dgjlklu 🦩cdfdf xcvf bruh!!!! 🤯🤯

Which former player liked his original tweet? I looked through some quickly and didn't see anyone. Saw a lot of likes from Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Purdue fans of course.

Why is BSF retweeting that when he's mentioned in Val's tweet as one that doesn't like PJ?
My guess is that's why he is responding to it because Val called him out by name. As others have said, it doesn't really do you any good responding but that'd be my guess.

There really does seem to be a bit of immaturity with the Val Martin thing.
I'm sure all of us who played football at any level had moments where we were doing 50 up downs and thinking "I hate this f'n guy" when thinking of a football coach. I'm sure we all had moments when we were young when our dad's gave us some tough love and we were pissy about it. That's why that kind of stuff is called "tough" love. He listed a bunch of guys who played 5 or 6 years for PJ Fleck and the only ones that left early left for the NFL.

As far as a fight breaking out on a football field. . . it's not like it's a good thing but again, I don't think that stuff is at all abnormal for teammates to get into it during practice.

These things can snowball & there isn’t really anything Fleck can do about it. Val probably enjoys the attention and will keep talking.

One of the players that was mentioned in one of Val's hissy fits clearly was a Jerry Kill guy. He said something like "my guy Jerry". I wouldn't be shocked if that was the player.

What this guy said could certainly all be true too. I don't even necessarily think it's a bad thing for the HC to be "bad cop" and the position coaches to be "good cop". It's a different kind of job.

Agreed 100%. Also, if all those NFL guys "hated" PJ, they sure have a strange way of showing it by coming back for games, spring practices and to speak to recruits/current players, etc.

Jake Paulson was the only name I recognized that had liked it. They would not have played here together and he would have been recruited by Claeys/Kill. That’s my guess.

Didn't Paulson also have an "injury retirement"? This is what he said about why he left:

"After last season (2019) I had three surgeries in the off-season and than COVID happened and slowed down my rehab and recovery because I had to go home and couldn't work with our trainers and do what I needed to do to get back on the field and be confident that my body would hold up," Gophers tight end Jake Paulson said to 247Sports. "And this year (2020), I was still dealing with injuries all season and by the end of the year couldn't even play due to injuries. So I talked to friends, family and Coach Patterson and decided it would be best for me to to not come back. I graduate in the May and so this is my last semester, so we decided it would be best for me to just finish school and be done with football. In 2019 and in 2020, I dealt with injuries to both of my shoulders, my ankle and my back. I tore my labrum in both shoulders and having three surgeries after the 2019 season was a lot. It just make sense that it was time for me."

Sounds like he had a lot of injuries for sure. The former player that messaged Martin mentioned going home/stepping away from the team for mental health treatment. I guess it's possible Paulson had all these injuries AND mental health stuff going on and stepped away.

A lot of the complaints seem to be about injuries, which are going to be common everywhere at this level of football.

He was recruited by Claeys, but committed within a week of Fleck being hired.

Another thing that sticks out to these comments is if it's so bad so many players needed therapy, then how the hell is Fleck able to hire and keep so many good coaches?

At one point I saw that Udoibok had liked some of the tweets.

I bet more players "dislike" PJ than we might think, but on different levels and I think that might be getting exaggerated.

For instance, someone could be annoyed at all of the slogans and stuff he makes them do, but it also isn't a big deal to them. So behind closed doors they might say "yeah, I don't really like PJ" but that's all the further it goes.

Just some speculation, but that could be the middle ground that makes these claims seem a bit more grounded. I don't like speculating much further though because I was never a D1 athlete and know that that lifestyle can be intense.

Meh. Greg Gard had a recording of his team telling him they didnt like him and would never talk to him again. Many rival fans jump all over it and it was "big news". Then they went out and won a conference championship and he may have won coach of the year, I don't remember.

Point being, this shit matters, but only about 1%. Sometimes where there's smoke there's fire. However, if Fleck is in the good graces of the main contributors and they play great on Saturdays, none of this matters. It seems Fleck has them going in the right direction so I'm guessing those signing the checks aren't too worried.
