Official 2023 Gophers Football Recruiting Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Rumors

It looks like Kade McIntyre is no longer showing on the visit list for this weekend (or are OV's now only one-day events??), which makes sense as it is showing he committed to OU on June 13.

Was supposed to visit here and then K-State on the 24th. Visited OU on June 8 and Iowa on June 10. https://247sports.com/player/kade-mcintyre-46131447/

Now just Tyler Brown this weekend, a late offer at WR.
https://247sports.com/college/minnesota/Season/2023-Football/Visits/

We appear to be his only P5 offer.
Maybe the staff moved on from McIntyre and Chambliss (who was also scheduled to visit this weekend I believe) with Elliott and McCutchin committing.

I would venture a guess that the OU staff asked McIntyre to cancel his remaining visits as part of committing. 247 has him as an 88. Wonder if he'll get bumped up to a 4* level now.

I think the portal also makes local marginal talent a less risky investment, we bring in a low 3 star MN kid and he doesn't pan out he can transfer after 2 years no harm no foul and we can replace with a portal transfer. We aren't married to these kids for 5 years anymore and I would imagine that PJ uses this as part of the pitch. Stay home develop in our system and if it doesn't work you can transfer to a lower level but still have 2-3 years at the top in the B1G and with our coaching. ie Make you the best player you can be.

That's a great pitch to PWO kids, or maybe that's what you were (also) talking about.

This is my favorite time of the recruiting season. The Gophers have 15 commits and there are probably between 7 and 10 spots left. I think they are down to about 15 to 20 recruits left that are being actively recruited. Certain commits have caused others to cancel visits or add them as the musical chairs is in full swing.

Recruits left they are considering that I know of
RB Marquese Williams PA
WR Anthony Brown OH
WR Ryan Manning MD
WR Tamarcus Cooley NC
WR Hayes
TE Ortwerth MO; We might have moved on or he did
IOL Phillip Daniels OH
DT Elinneus Davis MN
DT. Tavaris Gadson GA
DE Jaxon Howard MN
DE Ashley Williams LA
LB Asa Newsom IA
CB Marjayvius Moss LA
CB Cameron Fleming VA

How many they want and still need at each position:
QB Viotto MI done

RB Taylor (could play some slot receiver) maybe 1 more only for the right one. M. Williams (50%)would for sure be one they want. We are his only visit I believe this weekend with Va Tech and A&M still being considered

WR at least 2, maybe 3. Order of who they want: Anthony Brown (55%) (brother of MSS. Was committed, visiting KY and Cinncy). Ryan Manning (80%) committing this weekend either us or MD. Only thing keeping us from a commit might be distance. Tamarcus Cooley (33%) seems to be odd man out and still interested in UNC, Vandy and Ole Miss? There are a few others that I believe are fall back options.

TE Walsh and Peters. Only Orwerth (10%) maybe. He has many options and while the coaches love him, only have room if Walsh is considered a WR

OL 3 Tackles in Mister, Tripp and Johnson all set. 1 IOL Williams. Want one more IOL in Phillip Daniels (75%). He has other options (Pitt, Purdue) but I believe he is leaning towards the Gophers and will jump soon

DT Owusu. 1-2 more Davis (60%) Between us, Iowa State and maybe Washington. He still has visits. Gadson (30%) has good options (FSU, GA and TN) and visits left. We would take both but would be happy with 1.

DE Menz, plus 1-2 more. Howard (50%) obviously has a spot if he spurns Miami, LSU and Michigan. Ashley Williams (30%). Between us and NEB. I believe T Williams is only a backup plan and uncommitable until they hear from the other 2 above.

LB Elliott and McCutchin. They might be done here. 2 other LBs cancelled visits. Newsom (40%) is for sure a take even if we are done with LB

CB Bryan. 1 more, maybe 2. Moss(50%) us or Baylor. Fleming (30%) options and visits (UNC and Va Tech)

S K Brown and Monroe (could be CB. He reminds me of Eric Murray). I think they are done here.

RB Williams
WR Brown and Manning
IOL Daniels
DT Davis
DE Howard and Williams
CB Moss
would be just what the doctor ordered and in my opinion, the best class Coach Fleck has signed

Love your list! I agree if we can finish out with the players you laid out, we would be sitting VERY pretty! Gonna be an exciting next few weeks! I'm thinking that with the popularity of the transfer portal, we should see more of these kids committing this summer as opposed to waiting until the fall (like pre-portal).

Listed as a OU commit now!

Not arguing against that . However come Feb will it still look as good when we're sitting 45th in the nation vs the 12th as we currently are...

I have 0 qualms with this class... However I wouldn't mind seeing our lowest rated recruits in that .85 area... And not around .83...
I will give you ten .83s and ten .85s, no identification. You can run them through three hours of workouts and drills. At the end of the day you will have zero clue which are which.

Looks like Yazeed Haynes also dropped his visit and committed to PSU.

Brown are all visiting this weekend along with Elliot

Completely agree. Other than the highest thought of guys, Early July seems to be the cut off for the vast majority of recruits. August, we will get some transfers in both directions. Also, if you want to enroll early, decisions must be made in the early Fall

I will start worrying about the AVG star ranking when someone can definitely prove that a class average of 88.xx is significantly better than a class average of 85.xx somewhere other than just on recruiting websites.

Are we bringing in players on par with the majority of the conference and are we bringing in guys that can play in the Big Ten? Those are the only things that matter
Personally, I would rather have an 86 that we got early than and 87 that we get the day before signing day who wasn’t our first choice and we weren’t his.

Johnson is being recruited as a l.b. and if they want one more he may be it.
https://247sports.com/college/minnesota/Season/2023-Football/Visits/

Doesn't show either Chambliss or Johnson. I have no idea what that link (free content) is worth or how quickly it gets updated.

EDIT: the timelines on the player pages for both do indeed show a 17th visit here
https://247sports.com/player/owen-chambliss-46115273/

Sometimes those timelines can be very slow to update.

Like on Anthony Brown's timeline it says Kentucky June 3rd, but there's nothing on his Twitter showing pictures like it had for the Cincy visit on June 10th.

Not sure what you mean by actively recruiting, but I am sure they are in contact with many more kids. And they will continue to be in contact with players year round.

Williams would be an awesome get and appears to be the clear cut number one target at this point for the position. I see no clear back up option, but I would think they would for sure add someone if Williams goes elsewhere, maybe through the portal.

WR seems to be a revolving door of prospects I think they would want to add at least 2 in this class. Tyler Brown is visiting, lots of IVY league offers, no FBS offers. I would be surprised if he receives more than a pwo offer, doesn't stand out to me. I think Anthony Brown may want to see how the game play goes with KC back. Seems like we've lost some luster and momentum with recruiting at this position during the Sanford era, hopefully KC gets it back on track, it's a big advantage over Wisconsin and Iowa.

The roster seems to be managed so much better than we've seen at times in the past. I don't see the need for desperation adds anywhere. It's a small graduating class, so I could see them saving some scholarships for a larger class next year.

Yeah, would be great if KC is able to do that.
Don’t they have someone in position that handles how the roster needs filling? Almost a general manager type guy? Swore I read that a few years ago and thought it was such a really good idea.

Bolded: technically JMU is moving up. But your point is well taken.

Well 247 didn't have certain guys here for last weekend .. and neither did on3.... I just kinda combined lists ..
So 3 different websites all list different players. Do we know which one if any are more accurate?

This is the only part of recruiting I don't like...not calling you out at all but we (myself included at times) can get fixated on certain recruits and if they go elsewhere or PJ goes with a lesser rated recruit, it's looked at as a failure and people are bitching and moaning lol

And none of us really know the real story / who was valued how much / even was likely to actually go to the U and so on.

So hard to know.

On3 basically stole the best from the other sites not named Allen Trieu
Thanks, makes sense.

Indeed, other than the infrastructure built up by the sites, it really was a collection of the individual rating/scouting talent that drove the content.
