2022 Transfer Portal Discussion

Terrence Shannon (by most measures a top 5 if not top overall transfer) to Illinois.

A few weeks ago i was feeling like we were going to be pretty frisky, with recent additions by B1G teams and our inability to find any G depth, im feeling far less excited.

No reason to go looking for dome and gloom just yet. We are in a much much much better place than we were at this point last off season. How much better remains to be seen but no matter how the remaining transfers shake out, we should have a much better overall team for 22-23 than the one we rolled out in 21-22.

That is a really low bar.

What is a "contract" I don't know but Ruiz specifically says "under contract". So I assume if he does leave he would lose all that money.
I’m assuming there’s a contract that specifies what exactly he can get, and what he could lose it for (misconduct, etc). As far as I know, and someone who knows more NIL correct me if I’m wrong, you can’t legally specify that a player must attend a certain school in order to receive the NIL money. They could try to break the contract for some other reason, but I don’t think they can explicitly state that he is losing the money by transferring somewhere else.

Gonna be really interesting to see how this is handled. Kinda hoping to see him transfer just to see how it all plays out.

Yep.....but it is true....on paper this team is in a much better position right now than it was heading into last season. How much better remains to be seen but there is no doubt we are in a better place to compete with this roster than the one we had after the injuries in 21-22.

And the roster isn't even yet locked in with lots of transfers still out there in the portal.

Slow and steady wins the race. We have upgraded the roster significantly with the two transfers and 4 incoming recruits. Adding some depth and hitting a potential more impactful transfer in the portal for the rest of the window will be icing on the cake.
Without an impact SG I would say this is a C to D grade effort in the portal. If we get an impact SG then we are on the cusp and I'd rate it B or better. We are not in the icing on the cake range yet.
Unless one of Carrington or Henley are really ready to go as a starter at a good level in the Big Ten, I'd guess this is a 7 win team right now. One good guard gets us competitive at this point.

That's why I think Johnson really has a lot to sell to a good player right now. One guy could put us in much, much better position to compete and really have some fun this coming year. Who is going to be that guy? Cmon Mr Walton..... bench at NC or get your hometown team to the tournament?

In what world is getting Dawson Garcia and Cooper potentially a D for a grade?

Two top 100 portal players without paying anyone is a C/D grade?

I agree with a D being too harsh, but if we truly add no one else of relevance I would say C just for the overall grade. Cooper/Garcia were an amazing start but there is a clear need for a veteran G and we have whiffed on that spot. We have 3 open spots, 2 of those I think need to be guys who we can play in some role with confidence.

I will say after last year I am wary of freshman coming in and making a big impact. If Henley/Carrington were the answer at the SG right way that would be great!

You mean after last year when they played one freshman that everyone knew would be a project at this level?

We're at C+ right now with still a chance for B or A. In most cases Garcia and Cooper would be an A but here it has to be measured against need. That means still a good shooter at CG and a decent backup point. Get those and we are AA.

EVERYONE is very strong, I am sure we can find some people who thought TT was going to be a star and Thiam was really going to contribute!

Again I hope they do contribute, they seem like very good recruits, but again lets not pretend these are 5* monsters, they arent going to step into 30 min a game. My whole point here is we need a veteran guard who can either start or be a 6th man type so we have some depth. I am not saying the freshman are awful, I just dont want to rely fully on them day 1.

When you have 6 open- yes. Top 100 portal players is not exactly the same as like a top 100 recruit either. If there are 1000+ portal players how many can compete in the Big Ten. If that number is 250 then we got two guys in the top 40% of the eligible players at our level. How are we doing versus other teams at our level? I am happy we got Cooper and Garcia. If that's where it ends, this is not a successful portal season because we won't have enough guard play to compete, in all likelihood.
One more starter (SG) gets us to a B level, above average for a Big Ten program. I think that's fair.

6 questions on the test. 4 remain unanswered. If we get nothing more- it's a C/D. If we fill the other holes- as I said, probably a B, maybe better.

I don't know how any of this works, but if I was the Miami guy I'd make the money based on public appearances during the basketball season in Miami. Sure, go to Duke if you want to, but you'll either need to fly back to Miami a dozen times a season or give up the money. Not sure if that's possible.

There are some REALLY bad takes polluting this thread. People think we are getting someone to leave Duke or Kansas for an 10-13 spot on our team?!?
True about 10-13 but I think most of us believe we have a high minute starting shooting guard starting spot to offer. That’s starting in B1G not 10-13.

Not if the coaches aren't offering that.
Yup, this is what this offer is telegraphing to me. Ben has big plans for Carrington/Henley and wants one or both of them to see major minutes this year.

Taurus would probably be our 7th-8th man and I think that is an appropriate spot. Ben does not want to promise 30-35 minutes per game to a McIntosh/Strong/Jones/Larson type after Cooper took a spot because he thinks he has a couple 4 year players he can develop take on that role.

Think back to 2018 when we had Gabe come in and play 31 minutes per game as a freshman. It's not outlandish at all to think that Mr. Basketball Minnesota is worthy of a significant role (20+ mpg) from day 1.

This to me is starting to say desperation. Nothing elite, just a "hey we have a spot and you played before, its your spot!" Getting that Daniels feeling....
I'm thinking less desperation and more confidence that Carrington (and/or Henley) is ready to step in and play major minutes.

In this age of the portal you gotta keep your guys happy...and if we grab a McIntosh who wants to play 35 minutes/game, that leaves very little for Mr. Basketball.

Eh we'll see. He's not the greatest team player. Although Dickinson was pretty upset he couldn't come to Michigan. So sad they had to "settle" for Jaylen, must be rough

I believe most fans are under estimating Carrington, Henley, and Payne. Does Ben want to play them 30 minutes a night? No, but he's confident they can play meaningful minutes and is going to play the long game in this portal after landing Cooper and Garcia. Be patient, Marcus Carr didn't commit until mid July last year. Ben is being honest with the roles players will be getting here, if they don't like it, they can move along and Ben will find the right remaining pieces

Keion Brooks in the portal from Kent. If you leave a starting role at Kent you are getting PAID, someone has a monster offer lined up for him I bet.

Sharp 7'5 C from WKU also in, almost 5 blk per game.
