2022 Transfer Portal Discussion

Ogele. Thiam.
Ogele was a body, doesn't show up in the portal for 247 but guess he would technically have been a transfer. Don't think there were ever any real expectations that he would play a key role last season.

Too early to give up on Thiam. He struggled badly last year in his limited action but he was still a freshman in terms of eligibility. He may never amount to anything but too soon to say for sure. Some guys take time to reach their potential.

Ogele should play D2, maybe d3 and yah I guess I added in Thiam as he was a spring recruit, plus Ramberg so we had roughly 33% of the roster that should not have played D1. I know some was just practice team additions but still when 33% of your roster is WAY over their head and 2 are hurt it makes me nervous we have no one yet.

Ramberg was a walk-on. Are we really analyzing walk-ons now? Should Brady Rudrud or Hosea Crittenden been on a D1 roster?

Ramberg was a part of the regular rotation early in the season so it would seem fair in this context. Otherwise no. I think we all hope there are no walk-ons getting regular mins this year.

Just saw a tweet saying TJD and Race Thompson will most likely be back for Indiana next year. TJD could sign a 6 figure NIL deal

Somebody has to be first pretty soon or you got the whole "Why doesn't anybody wanna go there thing?" to overcome.
I know...patience. :)

Tubby Smith finished 6th in the B1G his first season. Richard Pitino finished 7th in his first season. It's unrealistic to expect Johnson to finish 8th in his second season with the transfer portal the way it is today?
Probably. Everyone else also gets to use the transfer portal. 10th place might be more realistic.

Outside of Daniels, what other transfers from last year had zero business being on a D1 roster?

Daniels was the only bust on the transfer side. Assume maybe you are counting Thiam as a transfer also.

Did you forget about Ogele? Yes, I think you can include Thiam. He was a transfer.

If you play only one big man in your lineup, then that person really does need to be pretty good at things like rebounding and interior defense.

Some keep repeating that having such a lousy front court was unavoidable and I continue to disagree.

In the immortal words of Jim Dutcher at the Jim Dutcher Basketball Camp circa 1978, "There are 250 of you here. Maybe two of you will get a scholarship to play college basketball. Your future is in school. Do your homework." Bubble burst, but wise words. We did, in fact, have one professional athlete in that camp, but he played five or six years in the NFL.

The college level equivalent statement could be delivered to basketball players with dreams of playing pro at any level. It is possible, but have an alternative close by.
Or as Clem Haskins told his camp, "You gots to get your education.!"

Without the injuries we would have had a decent front court. Not great but not the mess it ended up being. We know Johnson didn't get some of the bigs he went after in the portal, those guys tend to be really sought after.

Some will continue to pretend that it should have been easy to just go pluck some additional impact bigs out of the portal after the injuries and I will continue to disagree. :)

Put up your dukes! Don't you ever diss Hosea Crittenden again! Thems fighting words me boy! 😏😎

The portal is like a grocery store... every coach can just walk in and pick up any player they desire!

Players jumped at the chance last year. It didn't matter if Johnson was a first time head coach. It also didn't matter that the team's roster was down to a couple of returning players making it highly uncertain whether there will be enough bodies to even field a team. Sign me up coach!

It would shock me if TJD comes back......wouldn't he be a 1st round pick? The longer he stays, the worse prospect he becomes. His salary would make that NIL deal look like nothing.

Consider who you are replying to. Spaulding doesn't exactly spend a lot of time making rational posts.
He and Barny actually are rational if you understand their objective.

Ramberg was never part of a regular rotation.

Sure can.

Sure can.
Every coach has equal chance of getting any player they want? NW Tennetucky State can go nose to nose with Coach K or Bill Self in competing for the most coveted players in the portal? I guess the troll has to at least ask the pretty girl for a dance! ;)

Each and every player in the portal is available. Every one.

It is up to the coach to make it happen. Performance on the recruiting trail.

Or not.

Yep. The top players in the portal are going to take every call. If he doesn't answer, just keep calling. Maybe he'll be so impressed by your persistence that he will pick up the phone and be sold!

Perform. Or don’t.

A LOT of coaches are going to get fired in May this year because the vast majority of them are LOSING players to the portal and NOT all getting the top players.
Not performing?

Yup, fired.
