Transfer Jefferies Commits

We are doing well in the transfer balance sheet.
When players see multiple Gopher players get drafted year after year, players hoping to transfer pay attention and would consider the Gophers a desirable landing spot.

I am hopiing Gibbens will get drafted. That will be a huge PR for the program.
I think he gets picked late on day three - big, athletic, and makes plays.

He’s only going to be a second year player. Same with Shuster and Booker.

We can get away with having 3 second year players on the two deep DL if we are content to win 8 or so games, have a pretty good D and finish 2nd or third in the west but if we want to be the clear favorites to win the west and win the LOS vs Iowa and Wisconsin then I’d rather take another transfer DT like Chris Smith and roll with Carter, Smith, Jeffries and Richter and give Schuster and Eastern another year of development before depending on them being major contributors.
Just depends how good the three second year guys are at this point.

Just to put this into a bit of perspective.

Depth:
The Gophers were very fortunate in terms of injuries across our DL last season and even without any injuries, we played Pickney, Carter, MDT, Martin, and Richter (less so) quite a bit last year. One of the guys we all would have penciled into taking some of those snaps next year, Cheney, is also gone. While I really like some of the young guys, it's a position that needs more depth, especially considering the OL/DL are harder to plug in with youth. So, at an absolute minimum, he brings us that kind of depth that we really need. It's been a hallmark of Rossi's systems to rotate in a ton of DTs. It's a position where we need the depth. If Eastern and Schuster are ready to play next year (both FR), they will get a lot of run.

Experience:
I think Btown pointed this out. Jeffries probably has taken more snaps than all of our DTs outside of Carter combined. We can all argue that he didn't play much at Clemson but he played more than our DTs returning. One of our biggest issues in 2020 was that we had some talented DTs who didn't have any experience (Carter, Richter).

Style:
The only two "knowns" we have at DT right now are Richter and Carter. Richter hasn't played a ton, but we all see him more as a NT/MDT type. Carter is also a pretty big guy. I see him in a very similar mold. Jeffries is not in that mold. He is a more athletic, more of a traditional 3 technique DT rather than a NT type. While we need space eaters (Carter is kind of a mix of both), we also need DTs who move a bit. Again, our 4-2-5 defense can really put a lot of pressure on our front 6. They need to strong at the point of attack (they are often going to be outnumbered by blockers) but they also need to cover quite a bit of ground.

I don't know how good Jeffries will be. I just know he has seen the field quite a bit for a dominant defense. He adds depth to a position we need depth. He adds experience to a position we lack experience. He also adds a skillset at a position where that skill is currently lacking. Even if he is "just a depth guy", it's an important add.

Two words. Boys Mafe.

We will have time for developmental guys to bulk up and get grounded in fundamentals.

Roster augmentation with transfers has worked out well for the Gophers and for many of the transfer players and developmental guys.

We have one of the most well coached football teams in years. There is no quit in them.
, Agree, but we no longer have our DL coach. Hopefully we replace him with someone of the same mind set. Come on PJ, the ball is in your court.

I like Wilt but the guy who coached Mafe we also lost the guy who coached Mafe before Wilt got here. That guy did the heavy lifting with Mafe. He was really raw in HS, essentially played the "go get ball" position.

I think a DT rotation of Carter, Richter, Jeffries, Eastern, Schuster and McCoy presents a lot of raw talent. As more experience is gained, it could well be a very effective rotation with lots of situational adaptability. If PJ is able to add one more quality, experienced DT, that might help. But what we’ve got is pretty good already … just needs to gain experience (by playing).

Another prime example of how placing certain posters on ignore is necessary in order to enjoy GH.

I actually have had USAF on ignore for a couple years (since he was insufferable on the hoops board). I just keep seeing the replies to him on these transfer threads and my curiosity has gotten the best of me. I see nothing has changed though

Losing the Defensive Line and Defensive Backs coaches is a concern as far as continuity is concerned. Their success is being recognized by coaches looking to hire assistants. I don't blame them for moving onto the next level of their careers.

It will be interesting who PJ brings in to replace Chad Wilt (Indiana), Joe Harasymiak (Rutgers), and Clay Patterson (Colorado).

The defensive coach hires loom as crucial hires. It seems like PJ Fleck is taking more time on hiring this time around.

I was right about Pitino. You were wrong. Get over it. He'll be fired at UNM within 4 years too, btw.

Hope I'm wrong about Jeffries. But there's little reason to see this as anything but a stretch.

Maybe explain what you mean by a stretch? I imagine Jefferies and Surgers will play quite a bit of meaningful snaps immediately for us.

Maybe they will. But it's a stretch to think they'll play well enough to actually help win. They have no history of doing so. And if they're seeing a lot of meaningful snaps, I don't think that's a good thing, and it would be an indicator that prior recruiting hasn't been up to snuff.

At least with Jeffries, I guess you can hope he was just buried behind NFL talent, but that's based entirely on assumptions, not any assessment of his play.

If he and/or Surgers turn out to be valuable additions, I'll be happy and have no problem saying I was wrong.

If they don't help, I doubt the attack mob will do the same.

In case you didn't see it yesterday, PJ promoted a couple younger guys up from the staff for the safeties (Danny Collins) and tight ends (Greg Harbaugh Jr). They've both been with him since WMU and have been on the Gophers staff in different roles.

The defensive line hire looms a bit larger though, IMO

Couldn’t you say that about every single player on the team that hasn’t played a lot yet?

If they had been here 4 years, then yeah, I'd feel like year 5 probably wouldn't make a difference.

Fair enough. My thinking is that they will both contribute significantly. Will they be great players that will carry the team...probably not. Can they fit into the system and prevent a huge drop off from last year? I think that is possible. But I do give you respect for at least calling out the additions you aren't a fan of. It's far more annoying to hear people rip a recruiting class without ever naming any players that they think are deficient.

Thanks.

And again, I think the 2 DBs look like great additions.

Don't have any idea Carroll, but the pedigree sure looks good.

Is Transfer Jeffries any relation to Darnell Jeffries? I know we were recruiting Darnell, but I hadn't heard anything about Transfer. Transfer is a really interesting first name, but it looks like from the title, that's who we got.

It's like a Trill Carter thing. . .

It's like guys checking out your girlfriend, or wife in public. No one likes losing position coaches, but if no one else wanted them, that's a bigger problem than other teams trying to poach them.
