We cannot have that amount of transfers … I’m sure fleck will figure this new way of things out. Can’t lose 2 QBs who have been in tbe system 2-3 years who are your # 2 and 3rd string. Can’t blame them. Zero playing time. This must change

I think most are expecting Mafe and Otomewo to leave since they are playing in the senior bowl, but no official confirmation yet. I have them counted as leaving in my scholarship count thread.

While I agree that it's a lot, we did need at least half of those to make it under the scholarship limit of 85 this year even with the small class. I think we're just getting 2 years worth of transfers all at once due to the covid year.

Are you kidding? You think we needed 6 scholarship QBs in 2022? It would have been insane if a couple didn't leave this year.

QB is probably the least worrisome position from a depth standpoint, IMO.

Have to think the number of “open” QB spots at other programs is going to shrink as the great QB migration sweeps through college football and as more guys are left without decent landing spots or scholarships many will once again figure their best odds might be staying put, biding their time, competing (or wait for injury to starter).

Definitely bummed about MJ, Boyd, Gordon. I was wrong about them turning into impact players for MN.

I thought Boyd was going to develop nicely.....anyone have any insight?

Yes after the Lidner years I have a permanent twitch and get convulsions because watching him. I never never never never never never want to be left with a tight end or water boy playing QB

Just spitballing, but I think when a lot of these WR recruits watched the tape of the 2019 team, they saw a fair amount of passing and a lot of it downfield. WRs want the ball. He and Ewers may wind up in a program that throws 40 to 50 times a game. It may help them develop and have a shot at playing in the NFL, but my observation is there often isn't a whole lot of development in some of those "touch football" programs. Guys put up eye-popping stats, but they often don't become well-rounded players.

PS--Not necessarily expecting a Ewers/Boyd reunion. Just thinking both these guys want to end up i pass-happy programs.

it'll be interesting to see what the guys on the OL do. Do they come back for one more ride with Tanner, CRAB, and Mo or try make the jump in the draft (or retire)? Have to imagine MSM is back unless he just wants to be done. do we have any idea which of these guys walked for senior day? I don't see senior day cards from the Gophers Twitter for any of the guys under question

Given Mafe and Otomewo are playing in the Senior Bowl, they're gone.

It’s unique because of the extra year allowed. These guys leave and not all the others transfer.

Thank you for this summary!

Can we please make this the official thread??

I feel like some random poster will just start a new thread, on any new piece of news.

I don’t know how common it is, but I think I read from a poster on here that a couple PSU players came back after playing in the senior bowl.

Interesting. I didn’t know that. Something to keep an eye on then. Thanks!

Mafe and Otomewo may very well be gone but going to leave them in the TBD section until they make it official. As someone else pointed out I think just being in the senior bowl doesn't guarantee they are leaving but it does up the likelihood that they are gone.

John Michael Schmitz
Blaise Andries
Boye Mafe
Thomas Rush

Doubt Mafe or Otomewo come back....but you never know. Mafe in particular should put up impressive combine numbers that should have him going in the second day at worst. But....a few of these guys coming back could make the team VERY good next year. Good to the point where they could be undefeated going into November again. That kind of exposure could help boost draft stock.

Yeah, the lineman are of course the big ones to watch. If one or both comes back that will be a nice boost to the O-Line and that combined with all the skill guys coming back and KC returning bodes really well for the offense next year.

Outside of Mafe and Big O the other defensive guys seem likely to have pretty light draft prospects and would all be served well to come back if their goal is to keep playing as long as possible.

With the portal these days .... it really just depends on who Fleck can land, any given off-season.

How would we have done without Gibbens and Pinckney, this year? Etc.

Quarterbacks transfer constantly and now most of them will not have to sit out.
If Fleck decides that he needs another QB (either for competition or insurance), he certainly can get one from the portal. According to 247, there are about 60 uncommitted transfer QBs in the portal now and I expect that number will grow.

Wow. I wonder how many transferred in pre-portal times.

agreed. I'm pretty happy with a room of Morgan, Kramer, Athan and the new QB Knuth on top of the walkons. This is presumed it's a Morgan to Athan transition with Kramer continuing to play wildcat, though he of course has the chance to continue to progress as a passer

Boyd is almost a lock to be joining Ewers wherever he goes. I have seen that on several boards, I am going to assume that was an easy sell by Ewers. Hey I am going to be getting millions per year, wherever I go we are going to throw 50 times a game and you are my favorite WR. Boyd goes huh, the #1 qb recruit in the country wants to go close to home, I know him, and I'm going to put up stats? YEP SIGN ME UP. I would have liked to keep boyd but I mean kind of a no brainer there.

I dunno if they end up at TT, but that school has twice as many WRs than we do on the roster.

Just rewatched the fourth quarter of the Nebraska game. Man I wish Anderson wasn’t leaving.
Of the guys transferring out to this point Anderson is the only one that really stings a little because he did look like he was going to be a solid player for us going forward. The rest are guys that either didn't really pan out or were young and hadn't really had a chance to live up to their potential yet.

Boyd hurts as well. Got playing time over our other older receivers. Had good high school film.

Yup, same. Only speculation about why he left, but I'd love to know the full story on that someday. He was in line for a ton of playing time next year on what's been a pretty darn good defense that's sent (and will be sending) multiple guys to the NFL.

Yeah, agree on that as well. Loved his HS film and thought he'd develop into a really good WR.

The Gophers are bound to lose guys like him that were developed internally. The Transfer Portal option offers more opportunities for teams and players. It's a high-risk/reward option moving to Iowa State.
