Official 2022 Roster Status - Who is Returning and who is Leaving

Boyd got playing time due to all the injuries at WR and although he may have gotten in there over some of the other young guys I don't know that I would read a ton into it.

Disappointed to see him go but right now the loss is based mostly on potential for what he could be as opposed to Anderson who we actually saw in action and playing at a pretty high level.
What you can read into it is he played and several guys who have been here a year or more before he arrived did not. That is a very clear signal he is good. Actually, really good.

It's a real loss.

Yeah, he wasn't great at times in 2020 but our DL also didn't do him any favors. It's really hard to be a good LB (especially in our base 4-2-5 defense), if DL struggles. It's almost like being a RB without an OL.
Almost nothing bad about having MSM back; at the very least he'll be a good locker room presence and mentor for the younger LB's and at best, he'll be a better than average starter on the defense most of the year. Depth is never a bad thing

Semi-related. . . Ewers is going to Texas.

Texas had a 5 WR class in 2021.

It included Worthy, who was one of the top WR in the Big 12, another FR got quite a bit of run and the other ones all redshirted. None of their top 6 WRs graduated (and I believe all of them have 2 years remaining). Their 2022 class includes a high 4 star (.9655) that is the 12 rated WR in the class.

I'm not saying Boyd wouldn't go there and I am not saying he wouldn't play (I was impressed with him last year), but he would be walking into one of the most competitive rooms in the country this side of OSU and Bama.

Texas wouldn’t take Boyd unless it was part of an agreement with Ewers.

He played less than four other wrs that all return, three of which have multiple years left. So it’s a not a huge loss for the short term. I trust this staff to continue to bring in talented wrs like Hoskins and Anthony Brown, so I’m not chalking it up as a huge loss long term either.

Dunlap to Texas is a bit surprising.

I really don't think that would happen. Not sure why this board thinks it might.
If Texas wanted Ewers bad enough and he said the only way he was coming is if Boyd came too Texas would absolutely find a way to make it happen. If Boyd ends up at Texas that is almost certainly what happened because by all accounts they are not desperate for WR help.

Because it makes complete sense that it could. That kind of thing is not uncommon. Remember Brandon Green and Johnny Johnson?

Fleck's best recruiting job ever may be keeping some of these guys around. JMS, MSM, CAB, Mo, etc...
Has Mariano said he is coming back? Would make sense but hadn't seen anything official yet.

Huge to not have to replace our entire O-Line at once! Glad to have him back

He's only a RS junior this year in his 4th year and would be able to come back even without the free covid year.

He's just a guy you assume is coming back like any other player on the roster that has eligibility for next year, like Rush, Oliver, Spann-Ford etc.

I assume he's coming back, but I am pretty sure he was a SR last year. I don't think he ever was a RS.

According to Gophersports.com - MSM, Rush, Howden, Smith, Faalele, and Trickett are all listed as seniors. Meaning they all have a year left if they want it due to Covid but they are also guys who under normal circumstances would be done after this season.

Getting Schmitz back is huge. Your turn Blaise!

Wild guessing, with no news yet on Andries or any new portal guys.

Spring ball 1's:
LT - Ersery
LG - Axel Rusch
C - JMS
RG - Boe
RT - Guedet

2's:
LT - Lewis
LG - Jackson Rusch
C - Shaw
RG - Cooper
RT - Lawrence

True freshmen (first spring): James, Hunter, Purcell, all of which seem like Tackle body types.

Right, as all these guys played for us as true freshmen in 2018 (obviously not Trickett).

Lot of special teams guys on defense that year, but T-Smith started nine games as a TrFR in 2018. Not sure if he regressed, got hurt, or we just got better guys in after that?

I thought he redshirted, interesting. Weird to think a guy like him or Howden would normally be done after this year. Feels like they haven't been in the program for that long.

I'd still say though that I'd just assume they are all back unless proven otherwise if they are only 4th years. Exception being Faalele of course.

No specific info but wouldn't count Shaw out as a potential starter in 2022. He started quite a bit at his previous school and it certainly looked on the surface like a future move bringing him in as opposed to something specifically for the 2021 season.

Certainly. Open competition. Maybe they'll evenly split reps with the 1's and 2's, Boe can play Center as well.

Axel Rusch and Boe, if my memory is serving me, tended to be the ones who came in as "extra" OL. I don't recall much seeing Shaw out there.

That doesn't prove anything, and spring is the real time to prove it.

I'd almost be a little disappointed if Shaw wasn't strongly in the mix to start next fall. I'm looking forward to hearing what kind of spring he and some of the other younger OL have

Spot on. One more season with some of these guys is worth WAY more than recruiting a freshman, IMO...especially with the portal madness. Says something about the culture that so many guys are willing to come back for a 6th year.

In some ways, getting guys to come back is a lot like bringing in a transfer. Player who wasn't necessarily going to be part of your roster who can provide a big boost for the following season.

It's better than a transfer. If we brought in a transfer OL, I would hope he could be close to as good as JMS.
