Portal - Potential Incoming players?

Given the number of injuries we see every season, this would not be a good idea. It's not like the NFL where you can go and sign free agents in the middle of the season. Your 85 is all you have.
65 guys isn't enough to make it through the season?

Maybe not.

I suppose the "developmental team" rule could have an exception to pull guys up if the player is done for the year, or essentially gets placed on "IR" (can't come back for say 3-4 weeks).

MSU was a fluke and of course a no brainer for Tucker as it was his first year; this isn’t a lon term strategy to build a roster/culture/program - hoops by comparison is much different as you play so many fewer players and lose a lot less of them to injury. Fleck will wisely use it to supplement the roster and the players we want will notice the success enjoyed by Gibbens and Pinckney types
Fair points. We will see!

What it means is, you don't really need a full roster of 85 guys per year, anymore.

Especially when you can just "Michigan State" the portal, and go from 2 wins to 10 wins in a single year.

Yeah you might talk a good game about wanting to develop high school players ..... but why should you, if you don't need to?

You can let lower G5 and FCS schools do the developing, then get them as transfers with 2-3 years left.
That's not really how Michigan State did it. They had 15 guys transfer out last year and 10 transfer in, which they almost had to do. Almost all the ones that transferred in had multiple years left. Only 3 are starters, and of those 3 only Walker was a standout.

Good points.

Yes, Walker is a "standout". That is one way to put it.

Maybe we can snag Anthony Montero from Eden Prairie. He was Mr. Football in 2017 but chose a full ride to Rice over a walk-on opportunity at Minnesota (smart decision). He's had a pretty good career at Rice and I noticed that he put his name in the transfer portal for his final year of eligibility. We have had pretty good luck with Eden Prairie linebackers in recent years.

standout/outstanding, however you want to put it. The other 2 are cbs thats failed to make any of the all conference teams, so I didn't think they were standouts/outstanding.

Billy Turner going strong for the Packers.

Silly miss on that one. Was right there in Mounds View.
Turner from Shoreview. Went to Mounds View High school. City of Mounds View residents go to Irondale.

I'm not surprised to see offers to linebackers we seem to be thin at the Mike position.

I also wouldn't be shocked to see one of our LBers (maybe Lindenberg) transition into a Thomas Rush type of role where they are a pass rusher but also have coverage abilities. Rush was able to play DE, but could also drop in coverage (allowing us to dial up some more exotic blitzes on third and long).

Really, really like Windmon's highlights, would love to see him in Maroon and Gold.

Here's Garcia-Castaneda:

Former Eden Prairie star, right?
If memory serves, I remember seeing him in the prep bowl playing LBer and FB(?) and saying to myself "next Blake Cashman"...and....... PJ, correct your mistake and bring him in now.

If Jack Gibbens gets drafted, do you think that those LBs entering the Transfer Portal will notice that Gopher Football may be a good landing spot?

Do we have to worry about a cultural fit or the character of the players being brought in?

We don't want players quitting in mid-season or later when you need good depth for the final stretch run for the Big Ten West.

Knowing what you know about P.J. Fleck, you probably already know the answer to your own question... Nobody is coming to Minnesota unless they're ready to grab an oar and hop into the boat. Fleck will be doing his due diligence, I'm sure.

Obviously Fleck will do everything possible to make sure a potential transfer is a good fit but that has to be a lot tougher than it is with high school recruits given the amount of time you have to recruit transfers vs. high school guys.

I would think any transfer who gets an offer from us would give it some serious consideration because all they have to do is look at Fleck's track record here with transfers and they will see guys that for the most part came in and made a big impact right away, especially on defense.

I don't think Gibbens has to get drafted in order for transfers to take notice of us. Any of them that are playing attention will see the track record Fleck has had with transfers and the immediate impact that many of them have had.

Williamson, St. Juste, MDT, Gibbens, Pinckney, Trickett, and even Wright to a lesser degree. If I was s defensive transfer with a Minnesota offer I would definitely give it some very serious consideration.

It looks like Aggievision is also producing the school's 22 wide film. Just lacking some color commentary by Danny Knee.

Good points- we’ve already had transfers drafted and I believe Black Jack gets scooped up late and makes a team - he may not have been in the top 20 for total tackles in the conference, but the more important metric is what % of plays did he make when on the field and the ball was in his area - the NFL scouts have info of this variety. He also has great measurables.

I have zero worries about character issues with recruits - we’re not Brew and grabbing whatever- and no kids gonna wanna come here either as they can’t hide/blow off classes- plenty of other schools for recruits to go to, if they wanna run that game.

Every program has similar cultural demands. Nothing new to a transfer.
