Gophers in the portal

Interesting. It did seem like his role had diminished. Lot of competition at linebacker. Hopefully this also means some of the younger guys are looking pretty good.

At least Clark and Gordon waited for the regular season to be over. Anderson and Cheney quit on their team before the season was over. Would you want them on your team? (OF COURSE, have no knowledge of what went on behind the scenes)
Frankly, it'd be even less a team distraction if they waited until after the impending bowl game.

All players in portal:
MJ Anderson
Jacob Clark
James Gordon
R. Cheney
Add Cam Wiley

As for Gordon, that one surprised me, but I suppose MSM and Oliver are coming back, Lindenberg will get healthy, and we saw more of Willis and Burns than Gordon this year.

I hate kids transferring because we all get so excited about and invested in them after they commit and we see them on the field, but I can guarantee Fleck will almost always make a net gain out of the portal...so it doesn't really matter how i feel.

Aune was also out this year with an injury. He would clutter the mix at LB too.

I hear you about watching some of our recruits enter the portal but at the same time, I sure liked watching Jack Gibbens this year.

So these players leaving means that our recruit class for 2022, which was said was going to be smaller in numbers, can grow some correct? Provided we don’t use ALL the new roster spots on portal transfers.

Yes. It's convenient that we are finding out about a couple of these before we wrap up the 2022 recruiting class with signing day coming in a few weeks, and before the bowl game.

MJ Anderson leaving hurts. Not sure we're that deep or talented at DE.

But who knows who might be the replacement.
Yeah, that does hurt. We have some promising young guys who are relative unknown depth, but not a lot of proven depth depending on who all leaves.

But who knows who might be the roster replacement. Could conceivably be an improvement.
We didn't get a huge pass rush yesterday (we often only brought 3-4), but our DEs were fantastic in the run game yesterday. If Mafe, Otomewu, and Rush come back, we will have good DE play.

I think DE is one of our deepest positions and our highest rated recruit coming in is also a DE.

Just a quick note on Booker. He was one of the off season darlings with Fleck:
"Austin Booker is going to play a ton of football here. I hate throwing out the word, "freak", because people use it all the time, but he is a young freak. He's very talented and he's incredibly explosive. In summer conditioning, he won every single sprint. Every single one of them. He was running times like the wide outs and defensive backs. He can run. And he's getting thrown in there probably a little bit before he's ready as he's pretty thin and not as strong as he needs to be. But the minute he starts filling out, he's going to be a special player."

wasn’t Gage Keys also a DE recruit? Injured this year?

PJ Fleck's job is to raise the Gophers' chances of bringing championships.

There will be kids that are/were outcompeted for playing time. It may be mutually beneficial in the long haul for the program and for some kids who transfer. They may have a greater chance of starting at another program. Some may find success like Chris Streveler. It is not all bad.

The kids received an awesome high-value education coming to the U that will serve them well playing elsewhere and in life. The football team will constantly rejuvenate the lineup with current and transfer players to build good team depth.

I don't have time to analyze every recruiting class under PJ Fleck from 2017 on. It will be interesting how many of the original recruits in each class remain. We may be surprised. We may find that 3-Star and PWO players perform beyond expectations like Antoine Winfield, Jr. and Blake Cashman. There will be those who turned out as advertised like Carter Coughlin and Tyler Johnson.

Hadn't heard much about him since he got here.
He just got here pretty much. I fear these kids are making mistakes by impatient. I'm surprised these kids don't value a free education more. Might not be another free ride offered to a kid like this.

his gopher bio is just video of him receiving snaps and running as a qb in HS. maybe could have been the next Seth Green? guess he still could be, in the portal but not every player transfers out

Unfortunately there are still too many players that take the education part for granted because they truly believe they will be making millions in the NFL and therefore won't need anything to fall back on.

McGill looked like a decent prospect, sorry to see him go but he has to do what he feels is best for him I guess.
