All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

I like fleck but will not be too upset if he leaves, which I don't think will happen. There are plenty of other candidates who don't have a schtick.
There are plenty of candidates who suck too.
If fleck leaves my fear isn’t that there aren’t other good coaches…my fear is that we have an above average coach and we aren’t guaranteed to pick another one

Kill had a Schtick, by all accounts Fleck practices what he preaches. Some don't like his style but it isn't an act for the cameras.
agreed. literally every coach has a "schtick". most people just like the "one" they view as what a CFB coach should be. Personally I like PJs culture thing but if he isn't winning games at the end of the day he can go

Fleck mentioned: USC, Florida

Fleck not mentioned: LSU

Chances Fleck goes anywhere this year = 5% or less

Only way Fleck leaves is if FL or USC offers absurd money and Fleck always viewed MN and the next step before going there. My guess is the Fleck plans on staying in MN for a decade or longer and if he ever got the itch to go national championship chasing he would take the leap after building a culture and brand here that would last beyond himself.
Fleck had a list of programs that he would consider leaving WMU for, and Minnesota was on that list.

I just feel like southern schools can't realistically be on that list, then, if Minnesota was on it.

Wild guess is that it's got to be midwestern or similar, culturally. Assuming he would leave us for Mich, Ohio St, Notre Dame, and that caliber. USC would be interesting.

And yet, all of it is very much an "act". It's an act to sell recruits on a culture.

I'm not saying they don't actually do that culture. I'm sure they do. But I don't believe that culture actually wins you games, in of itself, on the field.

If it convinced a recruit to come here that would not have otherwise (ie, in the Brewster, Mason, or Kill regime), then fine. In that sense, it worked. No problem with that.

If you practice what you preach it isn't an "act". If you say one thing and do something different that would be an act.

I don't disagree. That's fine.

I'm just saying, the only reason he installed it in the first place, is for recruiting.

Practicing that culture, doesn't really do anything for you on the field.

He's not leaving. He's a hero to many here.

He'd be fired in two years with a similar resume' at a Tier 1 program.

Coyle loves a clean program and Philip certainly has done that in his 4/5 years at Minnesota.

Seriously, what did Fleck do to you that makes you hate him so much. Has to be something personal at this point because your hatred for him is not rooted in what is happening on the field.

In year 3 he delivered one of the greatest seasons in the history of the program. In year 5 he has the team in position to contend for the West division for the second straight full season. At this point we all get that you hate him. Provide a reasonable justification for why you hate him so much or get the F over it and move on. He isn't going anywhere so if you want to keep pretending you like the team you better find a way to do that under a coach you clearly can't stand.

Just not a big fan of much of his on the field schtick. Looks fake.

The cherry on top was running on the field in the 2019 game in IC and garnering a penalty.

That explanation doesn't justify the way you go after him with the name calling and constant attacks. There has to be more to it and if there isn't then you really do need to move on.

One thing Fleck is not is fake. Some may not like the way he carries himself but it isn't an act for the cameras.

Evidence is seen in the stuff they do with no guarantee of getting noticed for it. Sending an Oar to Dickie V, hand written notes to Mark Rosen after the death of his wife. The constant emphasis on community involvement.

He has openly said he isn't for everyone, but he isn't pretending to be something that he isn't.

They can write what they want, but PJ's already used his leverage to get an extension.
Is Florida that great of a job for someone who is running an established program and has the support of the AD and Alum?

So fake that 100 players buy into it every step of the way.
I think most people buy into schtick.

I think anyone who needs to convey a message to a large group of people develops a schtick. It's not an insult to Jerry or Kill to say that part of their persona is schtick. I don't think it really is disingenuous it's really the only way for people to motivate and drive a large number of people. I think you see it with bulletin board material or the countless number of players who build a chip on their shoulder.

It's partially schtick for everyone and that's okay.

Florida is a scary job because they just fired a guy one season removed from the SEC Championship game and a guy who finished in the top 15 in 3 of his 4 seasons (top 10 in 2 of his 4 seasons). The rumors are that Mullen made it obvious he wanted to go to the NFL, but I'm not sure if that really makes sense. We'll see.

Florida is enticing because the state of Florida has so many football players and FSU and Miami stink. Primetime will be at FSU in a couple of years, so that could get interesting.

I'd prefer the Florida job to the USC job, but it'll be interesting.

Yeah but not everyone wants to go to a southern hick town like Gainesville.

Plus, Florida has all those other schools, I never heard of, let's say 10 years ago, recruiting in-state.

Florida is definitely above Tennessee and Arkansas etc. But it's still lost a lot of shine from the Urban Meyer era, especially with OK and Texas coming on board.

Shooter chimes in:

Pssst: Despite P.J. Fleck having signed a new $35 million, seven-year contract with the Gophers, there are people quietly trying to get Florida interested in him. Florida will pay nearly $8 million a year, compared to Fleck’s $5 million with Minnesota.

Go Gophers!!

Shooter can write what he wants, I don’t think Fleck is going anywhere. He just stood at a podium after signing his extension talking about how he and Heather had made this home. Now, I’m not naive enough to think he could never leave, but he ain’t going to Florida.

Not sure Florida is a fit for Pj, but let's say Pj gets plucked by a powerhouse. Coyle gets 10 million. Huge buyout to say the least. Coyle did it once I'd trust him to do it again.

Whoever is writing for Shooter is just trolling for clicks. Pure B.S.

Florida’s next coach won’t last three years.
I’m never wrong.

Uour welcome

I’m not even sure what that means.

Nice timing on being wrong by this absolute moron of a “reporter” (in reference to shooter)
