All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

Very fair point. It's a real risk.

But also keep in mind: the school comes to you to ask you if you want it or not. You have to have a massive ego to have made it this far. And USC comes knocking on your door saying "we think you're the guy to take us back to national prominence, what do you say??"

Just sayin
I think in the past it was a no brainer and coaches would chase the bright lights. I am not so sure it is quite that way anymore as the money has grown. Now you don't need to be at a helmet school in order to make great money.

The allure of the helmet programs will be too much for some guys to resist but I think as the years go on we will see more coaches looking for stability over chasing the next job. Go somewhere like Minnesota/Wisconsin/Iowa/Northwestern, have a ton of success at a program that isn't going to be looking to run you out of town after 1 bad year or go to Ohio State where if you struggle at all the fans will want you fired and everyone will be calling for your head.

Great thought. You wonder if Norvell is already regretting heading to FSU.

I think he is clearly talking about the folks in charge at the U.

I'd imagine that the powers that be calling the shots in the athletic department at USC are probably a bit more conservative than the powers that be who Coyle reports to. It has nothing to do with geography and it's just the difference between a smaller (sports-obsessed) university and a large public school.

I do think it's easier to win at those schools (USC, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, etc.) because I do believe there likely are fewer hurdles. I'm not sure if I would say one is "woke" and one isn't, but I think the smaller private schools can maybe make things easier.

I agree with the overall sentiment but USC has a significant student body size.

Re: MN v. USC
USC as an institutional and culture doesn’t quite have the same antagonistic relationship with law enforcement and may have a slightly different student political leaning although that is up for debate. IMHO the wealthy booster base, NIL opportunities, and recruiting grounds will lure coaches. Those things will also help to trump most efforts by any sole administrator to topple or defund football. Money talks. MN football of course also had, at least for a time, a target on its back due to a certain vindictive EOAA head that has thankfully moved on. PJF has made major efforts to reduce that issue both within and outside his program.

Yeah, the BTN network has also changed things. Clay Helton made $4.6 million at USC last year and PJ Fleck would have made $4.6 here if he didn't take a pay cut for COVID.

Helton got canned after going 8-4 and 5-1. PJ would get a lifetime contract with that kind of production.

PJ should just keep winning and recruiting will go next tier.

As long as Coyle is here, he runs his program. He can become the AD when Coyle retires.

It will be sweet to actually witness the Gophers win a national title. Nice dream. PJ will have a gold-plated statue in front of the Bank.

Money and recruiting hotbed are two things that will sway coaches.

It's a high-risk high-reward gig.

You can get blinded by the glitteratti when they turn against you.

I’d imagine the powers that be have to navigate a lot of politics at both places but both prioritize winning

USC coaching search heat check: These are the hottest — and coldest — candidates

Medium

P.J. Fleck, Minnesota head coach: Fleck has not publicly addressed the USC opening, not that he would say anything helpful. Folks in Minneapolis may assume this will just lead to another contract extension for Fleck, but if USC actually has interest, it would be shocking if he wouldn’t listen. Fleck and the Golden Gophers just pounded Colorado 30-0 in Boulder, and his work with Minnesota in 2019 will put him on all of these lists until he leaves the Twin Cities.

Go Gophers!!

Forde: USC Stock Watch

P.J. Fleck, Minnesota. Pounding the daylights out of a Pac-12 South team (Colorado) in its own stadium seems like a good way to get the attention of another Pac-12 South school.

Go Gophers!!

Carol did things right OK. He paid all his best players. Understand, winning big time in college football flat out doesn't happen without paying players.
Now, none of that needs to be done under the table, so to speak...

For myself I can already foresee a future of utilizing my limited personal time to becoming an NFL fan again as the NCAA game becomes a constant churn of transfers, NIL lures, tampering, gambling, and corrupt conference league offices and officials.
What? Not going to embrace the Tommies?

Finally, a safe twin cities campus for our outer ring suburban athletes.
Hoping that the Tommies will start whittling away at the 2 dozen Minnesota athletes who migrate over the river to play at NDSU each season... It'll be interesting to see how long it takes St. Thomas to move up to the Missouri Valley Conference, because that's when it'll get real interesting.

the stadium, or lack thereof, seems to be the biggest issue in my mind -- well at least one large issue. It's a lot cheaper to find the money for hockey and basketball scholarships than it is for a football team -- plus title ix. Saint Johns has it made in that sense as it and CSB are two distinct units.

USC head coach candidate power rankings after Week 3

6. PJ Fleck

I am not sure if the top five candidates on this list would accept a job offer from Mike Bohn. I am very confident P.J. Fleck would say yes. That point aside, shutting out Colorado — where Mike Bohn used to be athletic director — this past Saturday in Boulder could not have hurt Fleck’s position. He’s a second-tier candidate who has a chance to become one of USC’s options if the dominoes fall in a particular direction.

Go Gophers!!

Shama: USC Seems Right for Fleck, But

There is so much interest in whether P.J. Fleck will ultimately be offered and accept the USC head coaching job that he is a betting favorite of odds-makers.

I get it.

Before the season my analysis of Power Five coaching jobs that could open up in 2021 and be of interest to the Minnesota head coach placed USC at the top. No other school was even close. The Trojan job became available last week with the surprising dismissal of Clay Helton after just two games.

College football media guru Paul Finebaum lists USC, along with Alabama, Ohio State and Texas, as the best jobs in college football. At age 40 Fleck might want to make a long stay at USC where the school is strategically placed to recruit in the talent-rich state of California. A private school, USC is expected to make all kinds of resources available to its next coach with the intent of restoring the football program to its customary elite national status.

Do the Trojans want him? I’d wager a new keyboard USC athletic director Mike Bohn has Fleck on “radar” but hasn’t made him a target yet. It doesn’t require hiring an expensive search firm to place Fleck on a list of a dozen potential candidates. His impressive 11-2 season in 2019, Minnesota’s best showing since 1967, put Fleck’s name on the national coaching map and in the database of athletic directors from Power Five conferences.

However, Fleck needs a shiny record this fall to captivate the USC fan base and almost certainly to tantalize Bohn. Fleck, now in his fifth season at Minnesota, has an overall record of 28-20 and in Big Ten games is 15-20 (only one winning season). But his overall career winning percentage of .583 is the best at Minnesota in the last 50 years. And since the beginning of the 2019 season his overall record is 16-7.

Go Gophers!!

Speaking of MAC coaches finding success in the P5:

how about Dave Clawson (Bowling Green, before Babers) at Wake Forest?

Never, there isn’t the institutional funding for that. Which is why they haven’t. Pioneer is perfect for what their university to be

either 2 things, he already was confirmed as USC head coach and players knew, or he is out of the job running

 Ignoring obvious trend is indeed dishonest.

You asked how we was doing.
He went 1-7 twice then Has alternated 3 and 4 win conference seasons

has never gone over .500 in Conference

Sorry for posting his record. Didn’t realize what actually happened was dishonest

Took you off to count pick em. Since I am no longer doing that. Byeeee

Liar says there's no improvement from 3-9 (1-7) to 8-4 (4-4).
