All Things 2021 Tennis Thread

20 year old American with the straight set win over Isner, who really seems to be going through the motions at this point in his career:

Go USA!!

Jack Sock with a win in a Slam!! Oh how we've missed this!!

Go Jack Sock!!

In addition to Sock's win, the American men had themselves a very nice first round (not counting Isner and Querrey who both lost in the first round, and disappointedly Sebi Korda withdrew in the second set). Something called Maxime Cressy had the upset of the first round for the American's as he knocked off the 9 seed. Opelka had a solid first round win, McDonald upset the 27 seed, Brooksby continued his big summer with an opening round win, and a handful of others also won including Tiafoe. Would be great to see 1-2 of these guys have a true breakthrough Slam.

Go USA!!

Massive win last night for Frances Tiafoe over #5 Rublev. He plays Auger-Aliassime next, which is certainly a winnable (but tough) match.

Brooksby, Opelka, and Sock all in action today.

Also, the youngster Alcaraz from Spain is pretty impressive at only 18. Do we have a Nadal successor?

Watched most of the Alcaraz match and yes, he looks like he can pick up the racket from Raffie for Spain. I thought he might fold, but his first ace on a second serve was the very definition of ONIONS!! Also I don't like Tissypants (yeah I spelled it incorrectly).

Fernandez was just as gutsy when she took down Osaka in three sets - she's also 18 - and is like a whippet out there. Not sure where she is in the draw compared to Briana, but would cool to see them square off.

The tennis has been extremely high level and for any hardcore fans, you need to get out to NYC once in you life. I've been fortunate to go a few times and it's fun, fun, fun, fun!!!

That was so awesome to see.

Wow. After dropping the 2nd set 1-6 and now down two breaks in the 3rd against the red hot number one in the world Ash Barty at 2-5, with Barty serving for the match, Shelby Rogers stuns the stadium with two breaks of her own and wins 7-6 in a tiebreak (7-5). Massive comeback. Crowd was on fire.

The Shelby Rogers match was one of the best matches I’ve seen in a long time. Such an amazing win for her. She was 0-5 vs Barty this year alone. What an incredible comeback and moment for her, and as GopherJake said, the crowd was electric.

Then Sock followed it up with an awesome first set only to succumb to injury. I really hope this mini run fuels him to get in better shape and realize his potential.

Tiafoe, Brooksby and Opelka all having nice tournaments, amazing how the young American men actually look more promising than the young American women right now, outside of Coco who obviously has a bright future. I think Opelka’s game is more well-rounded than Isner’s ever was.

Back to the Fernandez/Osaka match. I thought it was weak that the umpire didn’t penalize Osaka at least a point. I think they are afraid of her. She has been a mess this summer and definitely needs to step back and refocus. Fernandez was fun to watch.

Go USA!!

Last American left in the draw has to play against Djokovic...

And he won the first set 6-1 in less than 30 minutes. Holy.

Amazing watching the three 18 year olds advance to quarters over the last couple of days.
I definitely watched more tennis than football on Saturday. This has been beyond incredible

Love Brooksby’s game, how he uses such a variety of shots and comes to the net. That game in second set that lasted forever was insane🥳🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉

So great to see Brooksby emerge like this! In only his second Slam, to show this poise is amazing. Sadly though the match ended when he lost the 26 point rally to tie at 3-3 in the second set. Novak with ridiculous Court coverage to keep the ball in play and his ability to transition from defense to offense is unmatched.

Future of American men’s tennis is as strong as it’s been in nearly 20 years.

Go USA!!

Disappointing to see Shelby Rogers follow up her win over Barty to fall badly to #150 Raducanu. I get the emotional letdown that athletes face, but come on…I guess we know why she hasn’t cracked the Top 40 in her career.

No American man or woman in the Quarters.

Go USA!!

Fernandez was cruising to the semis over #5 Svitolina - she might just win the whole darn thing at this point. Hope she can hold on.

wow. Third set breaker for Leylah🥳🥳

Canadians in both the men and women’s semifinals! Oh Canada!

Raducanu wins first set, looks to join Fernandez in the semifinals. Wonder how long until Madison Avenue comes knocking?
Wow straight set W again!! She gasnt dropped a set yet in 8 matches, first qualifier (men or women) to reach the semifinals, while defeating 6 of the top 50 players🤪🤪🤩🤩

Wow thought Fernandez was done in the first set when Sabalenka was up 4-1 in the first set (of the semis) and getting hammered by her power - yet she still found a way to pull it out with a breaker.

Holy shit! There's a lot of happy Filipino tennis players in my household right now! What a match, what a win! Very cool

First player, male or female, since Serena did it as a 17 year old to beat 3 Top5 players to make the finals.

I think she’s gonna win it all on Saturday

This is the wackiest US Open women's tournament that I've watched.
Radacunu still hasn't lost a set and is the first qualifier (male or female) to ever make it to the Finals.

I'm not a huge Joker fan, but will be cheering for him to win the Grand Slam and most titles ever now, and on top of 2 teenagers playing for the women's finale, this make this the best sporting even of the year!!

This has to be the least likely women's final in the history of Grand Slam tennis, yet one of the most fun to watch. Good for them. Would like to see the American's step up.

Women's future looks bright with these 2 and Coco!

Now let's go Novak and win the Grand Slam and most major titles ever to cement himself as the GOAT

An unlikable GOAT.
After Novak's speech as a loser today, I can also say this I admire his body of work and his personality.

He lost in the last changeover, weeping into a towel a they exhorted him to continue. He said, "the crowd touched my soul. Even though, I lost, I feel like I won."

Good stuff - as a person how frequently make mistakes and has rubbed others the wrong way, I appreciate anyone who grows and learns.
