All Things Gophers Basketball Class of 2022 Recruiting Thread

They're ranked 3 stars by Rivals and 247.
Yes, and there are several Minnesota kids ranked higher who went elsewhere.
The difference this is one of those years more than 10 kids will go Division I in the state of Minnesota. Next year if there are only 3,4 or 5 kids to choose from how many will we get then?
We got three guys that have upside. We got 3 Minnesota HS recruits. We accomplished the goal. It’s like the NFL draft, we might have the three best guys out of the bunch…time will tell. It is a solid start.

We've got Sam Jacobson, Trevor Winter, and John Thomas committed, who will be Bobby Jackson and Eric Harris?
Actually I was thinking of the last trio of MN prep recruits that came in together, the positions match up pretty similarly--post player (Oturu-Payne), shooting guard (Kalscheur-Carrington) and frontline/defense/athlete (Omersa-Joseph).

That group was a mixed bag, with some pretty big highs and unrealized expectations, I'm hoping this group trends the Oturu direction, as a whole (Captain Obvious has spoken).

Am I crazy for thinking that all this celebration for some 3 stars is a bit.... Over the top? Pitino was bringing in 3-4 stars every year. Who cares where they're from... We're still missing on the key prospects in the state.

Secondly, all the fans of the program are celebrating Johnson's hire because of these signings. Let's hold off a bit until, you know, he starts coaching.

Idk, just seems like he's getting celebrated for some pretty minor achievements before the real challenges begin.

Who do you consider the key prospects in the 22 class in state?

I don't think so. These 3 are rising in the rankings based on their summer performance. With where this program is at, a new coach.....getting three of the top half dozen or so Minnesota recruits in a strong class is pretty darn good.

Holloman, King, Heide, Aligbe, Watsom, Lee.

You know, the ones everyone was screaming for before they announced their commitments (obv two haven't signed yet in that list).

It just feels like the fans are constantly moving the goal-posts and trying to convince themselves that any results are good results.

It's better than the alternative. And hopefully will make recruiting the top guys in 2023 and beyond easier.

I mean they could land Aligbe and Lee if they really wanted too, those guys dont have many options right now. Payne is gonna be a 4 star and the 2nd ranked in state player soon most likely. Things change, Watson was terrible this summer, so was King but hes coming off serious injury so tough to judge him.

I'd trim Watson and Lee but in general you're right. We're getting the Omersas and Hurts of this class, not the Oturu and Coffeys.

Not getting Holloman and Heide hurt, but it's pretty obvious they were too far down the road with Purdue/MSU for Ben to have any real shot. I'm not sure the guys we signed aren't better than the rest on that list. We'll see.

You can drive a truck through the gap between those groups. NBA players vs. marginal bench players. Hopefully they are somewhere in between.

Payne could easily be the equivalent of Oturu, Oturu played strong defense in high school but he really developed his offensive game in college, lets hope Payne develops the same way, might not have a Coffey in the class but I would have to guess a bit better than Hurt ended up being.

Payne will most likely finish second in the state rankings when it's all said and done, kid is as strong as an ox. 3-7 you could argue Carrington, Watson, Lee, Ola-Joseph and King in any order. Depends what you value, if it's potential and a higher ceiling I would put Lee and Watson in the three and four spots. If you value production Carrington and Ola-Joseph had the best summer's for their AAU teams and both Sizzle and D1 had stacked rosters. Eli King unfortunately has been hurt and didn't really have an opportunity to show if his shooting is better, but he's a great athlete that's hard to project right now. If you still count Heide as in state, top three will be 1)Tre 2) Payne and 3) Heide

Maybe you just started posting? But it's been well established in this thread that Lee and Aligbe fell off hard and may not even have any true P6 offers. It's definitely up for debate if Watson is better than any of our commits.

Wait til the actual updated rankings come out in September. I have no doubt Payne will be considered the 2nd or at worst 3rd ranked player from Minnesota.

myself, I'll wait until 2024, give them time to develop and play for the U. So, how far has Elvis fallen? will he end up with any d1 offers?

Looks like he has one from Marquette. Not sure how recent that is.

There is a tier between Coffey/Oturu and Omersa and that's where two of these fit for sure. Better/more fair comp would be like Jarvis Johnson, Ben Carlson and Kalcheur type.

I think you could make that argument for Holloman, Heide, and King but people were clamoring for Pharrel Payne long before he committed here. Months before Payne committed to the U, I said I thought Payne was the second best player in this class and that he's closer to Holloman than most think and it wasn't considered a "hot take" (neither of them had chosen a school yet).

Omersa was a borderline top 150 player whose stock was based on him being a freak athlete. He just never developed, that happens, it's an inexact science. As a recruit, I'm cool with us taking a flyer on a player like him. Michael Hurt was simply not a high end recruit.

Ola-Joseph led D1 Minnesota in scoring, this summer, over Heide and King.

I'm pretty sure Carrington led Grassroots Sizzle in scoring too. I believe Aligbe was second but Carrington's shooting is light years ahead of Aligbe's.

FWIW, before the Carrington commit, there were people on this board questioning whether Johnson would get any notable recruits and suggesting the hire was already a failure.

Now, at least the narrative has shifted a little bit with Johnson landing three in-state recruits.

You can always debate the relative merits of one recruit vs another. True, Johnson may not be landing the absolute top tier of recruits, but at the very least, he is landing players who are well thought of. have to start somewhere. The next test will be to see how MN finishes off the 2022 class. if they can land one of the better out-state targets, this could be a very solid class.

So, if nothing else, it's at least some positive news for a program that badly needed something positive.

interesting about Pierre and Dunn OVs coming up. Dunn refers to Pierre as "My Guy" when retweeting Pierre's final 4. Dunn has a final 8, Pierre a final four, and only Minnesota is on both lists.
I like your observation!
