All Things 2021 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

I was hoping the Twins would get rid of Donaldson at the trade deadline. He has been OK, but certainly not playing up to the contract he signed. Plus, he's hurt a lot. And now, he might be blocking Miranda from coming up and seeing what he can go at the "major league level" - as Bert would say.

Unfortunately, the only way for the Twins to get rid of Donaldson's contract is if they pick up a lot of the salary in a trade, and they typically don't operate that way.

8 hits 5 walks and 2 hit by pitch in 5 innings while allowing 7 runs. Rocco congratulating that performance is basically admitting they did not have any intention of winning that game. I also wonder how bad you would have to be to not get a pat on the back.

I don’t think he was applauding the results, I think it was an acknowledgment that the bullpen had pitched 14 2/3 innings in the prior two games and they needed someone to eat up some innings. Barnes took one for the team.

I agree with that. But that does bring up my point that they basically punted on the game yesterday. It looks like tomorrow’s more won’t be played as both managers have already talked about not playing tomorrow.

I also believe the innings will add up when you have a bullpen game. You can’t plan a bullpen game with Gant on Thursday and then complain about the bullpen usage the next day. That is something you brought on yourself by having a bullpen game.

Why have bullpen games if the plan is to lose in a day or two after the bullpen game with a pitcher who has no business in MLB?
Like I said Thursday they should just forfeit any game against the Yankees to save the pitching staff. They clearly have no intention of trying to even compete when they play the Yankees. Not that they are a better team than the Yankees, but they roller over like dogs every time they play them.

Another well run day for MLB. Twins players told to take everything out of the locker room today as they might not even come to the stadium tomorrow. Maybe just maybe they could have played twice today knowing a bleeping hurricane was come Sunday. The twins and mlb are a joke of an organization. Hopefully they cancel the game tomorrow before they let people into the stadium since the players won’t even be there.

Guys, guys, guys, I am not defending the Twins. The way they have managed their pitching staff year-to-year and day-to-day is an embarrassment. I only weighed in because I disagreed with the interpretation of Rocco’s remarks regarding Barnes’ effort on Friday. I agree that their staff is a mess and they give themselves little chance to win the way they have handled things. I will say that if you are upset that they are preparing to not play in a hurricane you might want to find another hobby. 😉

FWIW - the Twins are the visiting team. It's not like they can storm into the Yankees' office and demand to play a DH on Saturday. Decisions on whether to play are up to the home team until the lineups are exchanged, and then the Umpires decide on rain delays, etc.

And - like it or not, with the way teams use their bullpens now and shorter outings by the starters, teams generally don't like DH's.

Update - as of about 4:00pm on Saturday - the Sunday game is now officially postponed. it will be made up on September 13th, which was originally going to be an off-day for the Twins. And - ironically - the Twins are already scheduled to play a 7-inn DH on Sept 14th against Cleveland.

The LaMonte Wade trade just keeps looking worse and worse, which is something I didn’t think was possible. I am very concerned the front office can’t evaluate their internal talent they see everyday let alone other teams talent.

I think we need to pump the brakes on Wade. People were saying the same thing about Goodrum a few years ago. It was the right move to trade Wade when they did when there’s so many OFs in the system. They just essentially didn’t get anything for him.

The hurricane is upon us....raining cats & doggies right now.

The heavy stuff doesn't happen unlit early Sunday morning and it's an all day event - 2 to 5 inches in NYC depending on your residence .. No ones playing tomorrow folks, including that crafty Leftie, Noah Arc.

I can’t believe they tried to have that Springsteen concert last night still. Seemed like that was fluttering with danger too.

That’s the problem he was traded for Shaun Anderson. A pitcher that pitched in 4 games for 8 2/3 innings and was released. They basically gave Wade away.

Anderson is now on his 4th team in 2021 and has not thrown a pitch in the majors for anyone since the majors. That’s the problem with the trade. Especially when while you had depth in the outfield you also had a center fielder that is never healthy and rooked for the other corner outfield pieces.

At the same time it showed how little interest there was in Wade.

per Shooter:

It’s turned out the Twins got a great bargain in signing Jorge Polanco to a $25.75 million, five-year contract two years ago.

Polanco, 28, has become the Twins’ best player, hitting .276 with with 21 home runs and 70 RBIs through 114 games. He’s playing for $5.5 million this season.

Polanco is the obvious choice to represent the Twins in the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association’s Heart and Hustle Award competition. Ex-Twin Robbie Grossman is
the Tigers’ representative, and ex-Twin Eduardo Escobar was the Diamondbacks rep before his trade to the Brewers.

Win Twins!!

Twins opening day rotation:

Berrios-Traded
Maeda-IL
Pineda-IL
Happ-Traded
Shoemaker-released.

Current rotation:
Baily Ober-Rookie
Griffin Jax-Rookie
Charlie Barnes-Rookie
John Gant-Releiver/swing starter
??? Either Andrew Albers or (hopefully) Joe Ryan

The Wednesday bullpen game was not planned. Thorpe's injury in the 3rd led to that.
In fairness there was some suspicion that Thorpe was injured before he even took the mound. Gleeman and the geek talked about it on their podcast from Sunday. If that is true that makes me question the running of the team even more.

Sounds like Maeda might be headed for Tommy John. Sucks. But I'm glad they didn't "rest and rehab" and find it out in February. The Pohlads are going to have to spend bigly on some FA pitching this offseason. At least it's a good year for it.

Not to mention a shortstop, left fielder, first baseman, and a third baseman.

After being great in his first 2 starts, Berrios has been awful in 2 of his last 3 starts. Only lasted 3 innings tonight.

Don't know what it is, but when the calendar hits August, Berrios always seems to go into a funk. That is one of the reasons why I would have been leery about handing him a $20-mill/year contract.
