Gopher softball 2021

Hope we can get our bats going. Pitchers battle with our best hitters chasing that riser from the FS pitcher. Need to make some adjustments going forward.

It just doesn’t look to me like we have Dolcini figured out yet at all. Worried.

By the way...I found this interesting. I was wondering if the Softball Gods purposely put the Ole Miss game and the Gopher game back to back on ESPNU today?

Fiser usually starts against the opponents best pitcher or one of their best. Over and over and over again, Gophers struggle to give her run support.

I am not familiar with the High School careers of the Gophers. Where did Lindner usually play? She sure struggles in right field. Didn't need to see that dropped foul ball that certainly was catchable.

This team can't hit. Period. It's been an issue all season and it isn't going to change all of the sudden in the tourney.

Wouldn't be at all surprising if they go two and out.

They should be able to beat the 4th team but don't see them winning second tomorrow if it's same Fresno pitcher

Slow getting the ball in for third run too

This team managed to lose games to Maryland, Purdue and Penn State this season...I'm not counting on anything (including beating the No. 4 team) at this point.

And it will be the same pitcher, Dolcini. We don’t have her figured out... except Partain, of course.

Hate to say it but....I do not feel accountability with these players is nearly as tough with this coaching staff as it has been in the past. The team just doesn't appear as driven and focused as they should be. We are now talking post season Gophers.

I don’t know. Fresno State is good. I think some people overvalue the talent of the Big Ten. California is the birthplace of women’s softball. They have a lot of pure softball talent out there.

I certainly have been critical on the coaching staff for not playing certain players in past games, but in this game - I think they had their batting lineup about as right as they could have. My only critique would have been not pinch hitting for Brandt in the (4th or 5th inning - I forget) with Denson in scoring position.

But I really don’t know if coaches chewing more players behinds would really have caused us to win that game tonight. Dolcini was on.

I still think we have a fair (50-50) chance at two wins tomorrow... before getting buzz-sawed on Sunday.

Fresno State is good, but the core of this team went to the 2019 WCWS. They are not as focused or driven and you can see it. There are many ways to hold players and teams accountable without chewing them out. Coach Piper doesn't need to change her personality, but she does need to hold them accountable. All successful coaches hold their players accountable in their own way. This team has not been held accountable for their play on the field all year. That has been my biggest gripe. Hopefully, this coaching staff can figure it out for next season and beyond.

By the way, part of holding them accountable is pinch hitting for your .150 avg hitter, Brandt with a runner in scoring position late in a 0-0 ball game. Whatever level you hold a super senior (and I would argue leader) on the team to, is the level your team will rise to. Failing to do so lowers the standard of performance and the team will follow suit.

Well, one thing I am sure we can all agree on is that Jamie Trachsel is one helluva good coach.

She's got higher OBP with walks and had clutch hits last postseason

This is the beginning of the end. Fiser has done her best but there is no offensive support. Fiser will be gone and the offense will only get worse - what’s next? Middle of the pack in the B10 at best. My prediction is missing the NCAA tourney next year. We are still riding Allister’s reputation but that light is fading fast. Jamie got away with not being the recruiter that Allister was but Piper will soon run out of talent.

There's not enough talent in the conference to fall behind, need to hit with more recruits and there should be a few in next class

Agreed that the BIG is not a strong conference and if you have any recruiting and pitching you can remain at the top. They do need to find a way to get the talent to be displayed on the field in big moments.

This expression of woe is maybe a touch overdone. It looks to me that they have some players coming into that program over the next couple years that can play. The big question is, of course, pitching. Without strong pitching they will sink back some out of the top-two of the Big Ten and further down into the Big Ten.

Let’s hope some of these pitchers coming in (Leavitt and Hostettler next year, Schwartz the year after that) can pitch.

But it is true that nothing lasts forever, including the Gophers always making the NCAA tourney.

From article couple days ago she's committed for gophers

Sydney Schwartz is junior pitcher for Chanhassen, the Storm’s ace in the circle. She’s 13-1 with a 1.20 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 87⅓ innings. She’s tossed a no-hitter and five one-hitters and hasn’t been too shabby at the plate, either. She’s hitting .512 with six home runs.
