Gophers junior guard Both Gach was one of two players still on the roster from last season, but he's now expected to enter the transfer portal, a source told the Star Tribune.

Gach, a 6-foot-6 former Austin standout, transferred back to his home state last year after spending his first two seasons at Utah. He averaged 6.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 29 games last season, which included 16 starts.

In seven nonconference games, Gach averaged 14.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and shot 57% from the field, but he had a difficult time adjusting to Big Ten play, especially after a lingering foot injury.

Go Gophers!!

This exodus is impressive
Purge. Both isn’t the kind of player Ben is looking for. He’s turnover prone and doesn’t play great defense. Other losses are more significant but this makes the fire look more out of control. I do hope he’s getting some positive feedback from 22 class. A poor fall recruiting class will cause more fans to jump ship.

No reason to feel bad for Ben Johnson. He want the job, the U have him job now it’s on him to do the job.
I agree with this and I’m guessing Ben doesn’t want anybody feeling sorry for him either. He’s making almost $2mm a year and has the support of his boss. Things will eventually be fine.

Perhaps for him. I’m not sure about the fan base.

Next year will probably be rough when it comes to wins and losses, but I’m looking forward to seeing how the team develops and comes together and seeing how 2022 recruiting shakes out. The MN class is so deep and I have faith that they will hit on many of those guys. That’s what keeps me engaged and interested post-coaching change.

There's no way this is anything other than bad. Not saying Ben can't fix it, but what a cataclysmic beginning to your first coaching job. I feel for him.
Is it bad though? Gach looked like he had some talent but he was a non-factor for most of the season. No way of knowing if he would ever have gotten back to being productive. As opposed to being saddled with his scholarship for the next two seasons it is another spot Johnson can used for a 2022 guy.

I don't really think this changes the outlook for the 21-22 season. The upcoming season was almost certainly going to be rough with or without Gach. One way or another i have no doubt the team will have a full roster when we start playing in the fall. All that remains to be seen is how many of those guys are 1 year players who will be out the door at the end of the year and how many are multi-year options.

Will be interesting to see if Ihnen sticks it out as the lone wolf or if he goes as well. Going to be crazy to see an almost completely different roster on the squad next year. Doubt we will ever see turnover again the way it has been here in 2020-21.

You are in denial if you think that everyone jumping ship is a normal sign

Ben might not win 6 conference games (in a season) before his contract runs out
6 total is up in the air.

What has happened that would cause 2022 kids who weren't interested before to be interested now?

How many guys have transferred in? And only Thomson is still committed?

Fine in that his family should never starve? Sure.

People on here keep forgetting that Both was basically a starter at the beginning of the season and at one point injured his foot and tried to keep playin on that injured foot.

Based on his minutes my guess is it happened at the Michigan or Maryland game.

Prior to that his FG% percentage was bordering on good and his 3 point performance was bordering on decent.

After those games you see a massive drop in minutes and FG%.

Incorrect. Ben publicly stated he would love to have Both back.

That's not something you say publicly if you don't think he's a fit for your program.

Also, the "turnover prone" part, you need to look at stats before making a statement like that.

Just one example for you:

Both averaged 1.6 Turnovers per game.

Trevion Williams from Purdue averaged 2.4 turnovers per game and he was a 1st team all B1G selection and honorable mention All American

Don't try so hard to defend what is happening with the exodus since Ben took over please.

this is an interesting situation though.

So with the transfer portal being what it is this year, EVERY coach in the NCAA had the same time to get guys from there, so Ben was not at a disadvantage I would argue.

I would be shocked if he didn't loose out on players he coveted to other teams that weren't mentioned in the news.

That being said, normally people would say, wait for the coach to get his players. Well these are his players now. All of them are his players.

Pretty wild 2020/21. Man.

One statement is not a defense. Don’t be an idiot. If you read any of my posts you would be hard pressed to find any data suggesting I supported this hire. I’m not a zealot like you and like almost everyone else, I’ve accepted a move I don’t like and hoping for the best. I made one comment on one player. Keep it in context.
