Gabe to Iowa State

Guarantee his shot get "magically" fixed and he lights it up. Good luck to him. Seems like this last season burned a lot of players hard and they want new scenery, must have been pretty bad in the locker room.

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes it is good to get a fresh start, but it has to be kept in context of what you are trying to get away from. Performance on a D1 team is always going to be highly scrutinized and not something that can be hidden. The leash he gets at ISU will be much shorter than it was here if he can't get back his shooting touch.

The frustration from a U fan perspective is that Gabe is a model for the type of player that we need at the U (and what Ben wants). Gabe was a very high character guy, very hard worker, overachiever, played hard, high basketball IQ, smart, great person, leader, teammate, performed under pressure, etc... He is the type of player that you build programs with. As a freshman, everyone was amazed at how mature he played. He stepped right in and played like a seasoned veteran. Did all of the little things right, made his teammates better and won games with his shooting. But, some where along the line he lost confidence in his shooting. That is something he has to deal with and correct. We wish it here at the U.
Agreed, I’m sad he’s not staying. It’s telling though that hat when we hire his lead recruiter and his old high school coach and we still lose him to the next closest D1 school.
Of course Gabe needed to shoot better, but the fact was he was our best defender and in our system was left on an island on some tough dudes. We will miss him.
Many fans need to decide what they want. If you want local kids than treat them better in social media. Otherwise they see this stuff on twitter and they read the media continue to always be negative about the U. It doesn’t help us.

Where are all the posters saying he wants to go somewhere that they can win?

Defense alone should not get you starter minutes, especially at guard. It's the exact same reason Okogie is getting inconsistent bench minutes with the Wolves.

Was Gabe told he would be getting bench only minutes?

It's not. Okogie is not a shut down defender. Anyone that matched up against Gabe last season had one of, if not their worst shooting performance of the year. Gabe was a nightmare for other guards.

Gabe is a role player on a good team. The staffs connection to him previously is the only thing that concerns me a bit about his departure.

I like the transfers Johnson has brought in so far, and if he brings in a few more highly regarded ones, I won't view this as a big loss.

Gabe seems like a nice kid, but he is a mental midget. I’ve known that since two seasons ago in the Maryland game at Williams Arena when he (80% free-throw shooter) almost airballed a free throw with about 30 seconds left which would have sealed the game for the Gophers. He massively choked. His shooting slump is all mental, and I have no doubt that it will improve at Iowa State. But the pressure of playing in his hometown, criticism, or just the fact that he’s in his own head, was never going to let him cure his shooting woes here. Good luck Gabe.

I think he just wanted a fresh start out of hometown spotlight. He was treated terribly by locals because of his shooting and people overlooked his defense.
Was he outside of a few people online? He wasn't getting booed at games last year was he?

I don't really see how Iowa St is going to be any more competitive than the Gophers next season.

I'm a Cyclone and stopped watching even though I was bored and stuck at home isolating all winter. Cyclones were like the road Gophers, only worse, and for ALL games. It was something beyond a dumpster fire of a season. Not even sure how you claw back after it. Landing any quality P6 player is a minor miracle at this point. The last time ISU had a season this bad was 50 years ago and they bounced back quickly but that was a different era, players didn't transfer and the only immediate help was Juco players (which they did go with). Now hundreds of kids are moving around, no one is stuck sitting it out if they don't like the situation.

I agree. We do need more depth though for sure. Woulda been nice to keep a guy like Gabe. We really need guards. He would've easily started on this team next year so it is a blow unless we're pulling in some better talent hopefully.

He clearly doesn't view himself as a bench player which if I had to guess is a key reason he is transfering.

Umm, Wisconsin inquired on Gabe. They spoke to Gabe.

I haven't seen anything that they officially "wanted" Gabe with an offer.
Right because you would always inquire and speak with people you don't want. It's not like they were learning anything by speaking with Gabe, all the tape in the world is out there to see what he brings, not to mention they have played against him, scouted him, and schemed against him. This is silly.

It will be interesting. Iowa State's best recruit missed nearly the entire year with an injury. Best transfer sat out for Covid. Have a 4 star point gaurd coming in this year from Wisconsin. Now with Gabe that will be a huge talent infusion. And they are still filling spots like the Gophers.

Ridiculous. Gabe was a guy who could take the other team's best player and shut him down and it wasn't like he was shutting down only other 2's he was shutting down 1-3's and occasionally a 4. You guys who downplay this really are missing an understanding of the game. So what if he wasn't scoring enough, you've got 4 other positions to get your points from. This is a huge loss, especially if you are trying to build your program off of a defensive toughness foundation.

We are not a good team, and that includes the transfers we have coming in. I would agree if we had a bunch of super stars coming in and we needed to make room, but we can't even field a team at this point, and the mid major players coming in have, what look like, some good points, none of them are elite in an area. Gabe was elite in his D, no question about that.

This. How is this going to play now through the AAU circles? I assume Gabe was liked in the AAU circles, and they watched somebody who they care for get ripped and under appreciated despite being "one of us". You think these AAU types are going to encourage their guys to stick around, nah, they are going to say, "yeah I remember what they did to Gabe, they won't treat you like a hero, they will throw you away just like anyone from anywhere, don't buy that line."

bummer he's going. would have filled in as a reasonable player/role guy and helped bridge the gap to the new tenure/new players. anybody who's acting like it's nothing to lose another MN guy who seemed to commit here to play for the U is full of it. It hurts us next year as well as possibly for the future if Gabe at all was unhappy with how he was treated both pre-Johnson hire and after he was hired.

So of the Omersa, Oturu, Gabe class we got 2 years from Oturu, 3 from Gabe and 2 from Jarvis. That's tough on a program- especially when the 2 from Jarvis provided so little productivity.

If history is any predictor, most players from low/mid majors that transfer to Power 6 have a drop (in some cases significant) in their numbers. In some cases obviously because of minutes, but others because of difference in talent. We'll see how they do soon enough though.

We need more depth? We need STARTERS.

We literally have no STARTERS right now. Maybe Gach pre injury.

Nah. You can bet Ben welcomed Gabe 100% to return. As to fans- anyone that shoots 25% like Gabe did, is going to get criticized and it doesn't matter where you go. Everyone gets that. Gabe was treated fairly here. Great kid and valuable while here. Wish it would have worked out better.
