All Things Tre Holloman Recruitment Thread (Class of 2022)

Which sport is he better at? I would think that would be nearly impossible to play both but that was the idea for Suggs at MN. Is the only way Tre comes to MN is if he can play both? Fleck doing Johnson a favor?
His scholarship would count towards football and not basketball. Or at least I believe that’s the case.

This is correct. Otherwise you could use track scholarships or wrestling scholarships to make a better football team.

Kansas, UNC, Kentucky, Duke, Ohio State, Baylor, Indiana, Memphis, Michigan

That is just for starters. Might be more like last 20 years.
Indiana and Memphis have not been anywhere near top 10 programs, or has OSU for the most part.

He is not the right fit for wi or ia but those papist schools might be circling.

Indiana making the move up.
That went real well for Race…. No reason to go to Indiana instead of the Gophers. Not like they have been building a relationship for years…. They are new comers..

This is the issue that our coach will be facing though...new staff at Indiana, but the head coach has been in the NBA for years, and will sell the connections he has, and that he knows what it takes to get players to the league. Ben has to find a way to compete with situations like this when he has no track record to sell.

No, he doesn't know what it takes to get players to the league. Just because he's been in the NBA doesn't mean that he knows how to take a high school player and mold them into a future pro. Johnson can say that he has recruited players who have made it to the league... Woodson not so much.

Fife is not a newcomer to Tre. Did not say he is going there but going to IU is more illustrious than going here if that matters. Their brand plays larger than our. Way more history, far greater support.

Really? Working with players for as long as he has been a head coach in the NBA does not give him the credibility to tell a recruit that he knows what it takes to get to the league? But, Ben, a guy who has neither coached nor played in the NBA, nor has anyone on staff who has coached nor played in the NBA (from what I know) does? Hmmm.....interesting perspective. I guess we will see who the high level recruits trust.

Because players like Tre have been going to Indiana in the distant past.

It takes players like Tre to trust and belief in Ben to build up the support and history at the U. It isn’t magic. Players like Tre have become who they are by having the talent and drive to achieve, but also by having numerous people help develop his skills. People who believed in his potential and trusted that he would put in the effort to make it work.

Ben is not a newcomer to Tre, he is not a newcomer to his family, he is not a newcomer to his coaches, etc. Many of those people had some influence in getting Ben hired! They all highly praised Ben and his abilities. We will soon learn if they all truly want to build a program at the U or if it was just lip service and they are more enamored with perceived “bright lights”.

Great coaches get these players and they do it right away. I expect a great class to sign this fall.

So just recruiting high school players means Johnson has more experience getting guys to the NBA than a guy who's coached and developed NBA players for decades? You can't be serious.

I'm just saying that developing a HS player in college is a different skill set than coaching and managing a bunch of superstars in the NBA. The difference between the jobs is one reason that coaches flame out moving from one to another.

I'll take my chances on Ben for our situation. I think that he has actually put in the work over more than a decade honing the games of student-athletes seeking to get paid after college. Woodson has no history of doing the same with college students. Coaches in the NBA rarely get credited for developing players once they get there. Most arrive as more of a finished product so coaches manage personalities and talent.

I guess the question is would you have hired Ryan Saunders over Ben for his experience in the NBA? Do you think that he could have sold himself to recruits as a former head coach? Woodson, as a Hoosier alum, may be right for Indiana... who knows?

I understand what you are saying, I just disagree. I would not have hired Ben for this position, period as I feel he is over his head to be starting at a division 1 level for his first head coaching job. Hope I am proved wrong though. Over time, if Saunders reinvents himself, he potentially could be a candidate for a college position, and yes, he would sell his NBA experience to recruits, just like Woodson is doing now. Off of the top of my head, the name that comes to mind most similar to a degree to Woodson is Fred Hoiberg. Did a great job in his first college position at Iowa State coming directly from the NBA. Since then, a bit of a mess but he would akin to Saunders now (failed NBA coach trying to immediately get back into college coaching).

Interestingly all of the coaches that we have mentioned are alum. Throw in Howard at Mich and countless others and that is another horse to hitch one's wagon to. As for Ben's preparedness.... I would encourage you to listen to some of the podcast and webcasts in another thread. I love his attention to detail. He will not fail for lack of preparedness. He knows what he is doing.

No one should be willing to say he knows what he is doing because of a podcast.

TRE TRE ALLLLL DAY is what I say
They need to get one highly ranked local in the next month or so to lead the way. Tre would be an incredible get for Ben and would start things in the right direction. Start with a player like that and others follow. If we don't get a leader, it will be tougher to get the others.

Yes, I agree. That is a big part of why they get the jobs they get, even with a lack of college coaching experience. I am sure he is prepared as much as he can be and pays attention to details. The lack of experience won't mean that he can't do those things, but if you listened to interviews of virtually any division 1 coach in college basketball, I believe you would come away equally impressed as they all would say pretty much the same things or do the same things. Those things are required of a head coach.

The lack of experience will show in Ben running HIS offense and HIS defense and having to be the one to make the adjustments and game-time decisions. As an assistant, he suggested things he felt would be worth considering. It is a lot different when you have to process what you think, hear what your assistants are suggesting, and then make the call in a couple of seconds or less. Being in the head chair is so much more difficult than being one or two chairs over. You learn that at the lower levels and how to do it better than you did the year before or the game before. Ben will be doing that now against Izzo, etc. Woodson has already done all of that against the greatest basketball minds in the world as he coached against other NBA coaches. That is the value of value of experience.

If you listen to any of the many podcasts/interviews, you will note a level of preparedness that is beyond what the previous coaching staff exhibited. Ben has plans for plans. I can tell you that this guy knows what he is doing. He may have only been on the job for a month or so but he has been planning for this for many years.

People also used to rave about Ryan Saunders preparedness and attention to detail. The Wolves fired him and hired a coach with significantly more experience. The coaching improvement from Saunders to Finch has been night and day.

In reality Saunders is more like Pitino and Ben is more comparable to Fitch. Fitch never had a HC job, but had been an assistant for quite awhile. We won't know until we see it, but when I see the people backing and willing to come on board with him coaching wise, I like it so far. Will be fun to see what we do next season.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but Chris Finch was a head coach in Europe and the D League from 1997-2011. He has only been an assistant in the NBA, but he had plenty of experience as a head coach before coming to the Wolves.

Correct was using the comparisons in terms of longevity. They are not perfectly aligned

If Ben can somehow land both Holloway and Heide, half this board will have go to detox and the other half will start drinking again.
If that happens, hopefully somebody checks my pulse and realizes I fainted. Before a bunch of "my adoring fans" start shoveling dirt on me.
