Next Gopher Head Coach

So Ben Johnson gets credit for Coffey but doesnt take any blame for all the misses?

In my opinion Coffey was a Gopher in spite Pitino...and Ben hasn't been here the last 3 seasons, so all the misses the last three seasons would have nothing to do with him.

I don't know if Johnson would be any better at x's and o's than Richard Pitino, but I know he would definitely recruit Minnesota much better.

How do we know Gates wouldn't leave for FSU as soon as Hamilton retires....especially if he does well here?

I just found it interesting Doogie circling back to that quote this morning. Where is written that a head coach has to go to a directional state university for a few years before coaching the Gophers. Dean smith and Jawan Howard didn't.

Shooter weighs in:

-Gopher fans pining for Eric Musselman, but U waited too long.
-Now Brian Dutcher is people's choice.
-Hearing whispers that Coyle's early choice is Craig Smith.
-Smith has already met with Utah, they are expected to pay in the $2.75-3.25 million range.
-Porter Moser may wind up at Creighton if Greg McDermott resigns. He's an alumni.
-Possible assistants for Dutcher would include Ben Johnson, Ryan Saunders and Barry Wohler.
-Anthony Grant could be in line for Miami job if that opens up, and is a candidate at Marquette.
-Less expensive options for Gophers include Howard Eisley, Sam Mitchell and Dennis Gates.
-Sam Mitchell credited with recruiting James Wiseman at Memphis.
-Jarvis Omersa could end up playing basketball and football at St. Thomas.

Lol Penny Hardaway was Wisemans high school and AAU coach. Wiseman was ineligible due to Penny paying to move his family. The Mitchell push by the local media is asinine and needs to stop

Doogie added this to that original tweet:

Top NBA assistant.
So no head coaching experience....especially in college. how did they know he was going to translate to being successful as a head coach if he had never done it before. How did they know he would be able to adjust to the college game? I'm just pointing out that not everyone goes through the same path to become head coaches at universities like North Carolina and Michigan...

Coffey was a gopher cause he tore his ACL his junior year and didn’t get the blue blood offers he wanted. Also helped that Hoiberg went to the bulls. We lucked out big time to get him.

I was replying to the poster because their name is Whalen fan. That's not why Jawan Howard was named head coach at Michigan btw....
Correct Juwan Howard is well respected and will be an NBA coach soon. He was top 3 for the wolves a couple years ago.

If Jones were a junior in high school and tweeting this out, then I would consider this important. As it is, it is just interesting.
If he was a junior in high school we should pay even less attention

comparing mbb and wbb is really dumb so I didnt even respond to that comment. Juwan has interviewed for NBA hc jobs the last couple years and will likely be a NBA hc whenever he wants. Ben Johnson interviewed for Montana st last year and Northern Illinois this year and was passed up on. Theres a big difference in where those 2 guys are at.

Tyus should worry about who ultimately replaces Coach K at Puke. Nobody here gives a crap about what he thinks is best for a program he spurned.
Come on, quit being so harsh. I think we were in his final 5.

We had an idea that Whalen would bring fans to a sport that doesn’t bring in a ton of revenue.
We needed a hire to reinvigorate the program and Whalen was it. Cheryl Reeves convinced Coyle that Wahlan had the talent to coach just needed experience. Super easy decision. Wish this one was as easy.

If my memory serves me correctly, wasn't Ben Howland (current Mississippi State coach) mentioned in the coaching search last time around?
There were a number of coaches being considered. As I understand it some coaches called saying if your considering me don't.

Tyus can stick it. A guy that never played here wants to chime in? Agree with me or disagree with me, at least I'm all in on my university. He left here. He could have helped bring this place to a level it should be at; instead he abandoned ship.
His brother played for Niko at Furman
