Next Gopher Head Coach

Didn’t see him mentioned but the answer to your question would be “yes”.
He's making $4M a year now at the Ville - can't see MN being a step up or even a lateral move based on their history there.

He would have cool music for his intro presser -

They do for the very best of the best. IE, guys we'll never have a shot at.
A problem I see with your reasoning (from this & past posts) is that by the time a coach has the record to proves elite performance to you, only the Blue Bloods can afford him.

Thus the idea that you need to hire these guys early in their career, when they are showing the signs of elite potential.

Swing for the fences. Accept a greater chance of striking out.

The sweet spot for us is mid-majors. Proven enough to show their potential, but not done so well off the charts and at a borderline high-major program that only the biggest fish and swoop in.

Frequent lurker here, but I've been surprised not to see Shantay Legans mentioned more in these conversations. He has a good record at Eastern Washington over four seasons, and especially in the last two. Gave Kansas a game yesterday.

Perhaps he's thought of as a West Coast guy, but EWU has to be a tough place to recruit, even by Big Sky standards.

Indeed, I am correct on this issue.
No.

You have opinions you assume are correct.

I am of the opinion that Gates is the best candidate. I came to that conclusion from spending at least 10 hours listening to podcasts where he was a guest, reading interviews and outside opinion pieces on him, etc.

I am not arrogant enough to claim that I know that I am right, but, you do you.

The issue tool is referring to in this case is his contention you needn't cite sources when you rip off a reporter's work and present it as your own.

Did you know my own personal hard work and investigative research indicates President Nixon is at the center of a plot to steal Democratic National Committee information?

You have opinions you assume are correct.
Yes, often. And with a high percentage, I turn out to be wrong.

And ... so what? Doesn't cost me a thing.

Talk, talk, talk.

Show me. Don't tell me.

Shooter weighs in:

-Gopher fans pining for Eric Musselman, but U waited too long.
-Now Brian Dutcher is people's choice.
-Hearing whispers that Coyle's early choice is Craig Smith.
-Smith has already met with Utah, they are expected to pay in the $2.75-3.25 million range.
-Porter Moser may wind up at Creighton if Greg McDermott resigns. He's an alumni.
-Possible assistants for Dutcher would include Ben Johnson, Ryan Saunders and Barry Wohler.
-Anthony Grant could be in line for Miami job if that opens up, and is a candidate at Marquette.
-Less expensive options for Gophers include Howard Eisley, Sam Mitchell and Dennis Gates.
-Sam Mitchell credited with recruiting James Wiseman at Memphis.
-Jarvis Omersa could end up playing basketball and football at St. Thomas.

Well ... there it is.

That's the "out", if they want to do it like that. Utah outpays Minnesota.

Take a big risk on Gates because he's cheap .... because of course he is, hasn't proven jack squat.

I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel where I’m not spending an hour catching up on this thread after taking a few hours off from it.

I’m then looking forward to spending hours catching up on people complaining about the new hire or staying it was their first choice the entire time.
As the world turns!

It be would be least surprising for Smith to get the job. I know there were rumblings last year that Smith was the first interview before Covid shut down the season and firing. He really seems like the safest choice so it makes sense.

This column was informative.
Has the Shooter hired a ghost writer?

I am only exaggerating a little when i say all i care about in a new coach is his recruiting abilities. Whoever that is, sign me up.

I'm in on gates, but if coyle likes smith would be a shame if we cant even outbid utah.

My opinion: we need to pony up, match Utah, and hire Smith. There's a reason they'd offer so much: he's worth it. If they didn't, someone else will. This is the big time.

i would have loved to hear your opinion on Chris Beard and Scott Drew if we hired them from their previous stop 🤣 would have been WWIII on here.

The good news is Smith wants the Minnesota job more than he wants the Utah job.
But what does his family want? And/or, what does he want for his family? Said in USU videos that they love it out West.

Could play a factor. Or maybe he was just saying that to say the right thing in the interview.
