Next Gopher Head Coach

There are only three rumored candidates that fit this description:

1. Musselman - LSU, Nevada, Arkansas
2. Smith - ND State, Colorado St, Nebraska, Utah St.
3. Medved - Minnesota, Colorado St

I guess Smith's haven't technically been in an urban setting.
"Compliance" in the SEC means not getting caught.

I'm not sure I follow how each does or does not meet the "compliance" part? Not aware of NCAA issues for anyone being discussed.

By "proven recruiter", I meant at the P5/6 level already, as an assistant.

I don't like those hires, and usually I don't think they work as well as hiring a proven coach from a lower level. At least, that's my observation for football.
Well if we aren’t focused on a sport I think hiring no name coaches with no experience is ideal. Look at men’s fencing!

Hmm, Gaard was the one who indicated we had a shot at musselman about a week ago. Not saying that we do, just unsure how plugged in he is. Guess we will see.
I think he is as plugged in as many but works so closely with the school he doesn’t often share what he hears and knows. Not really his job.

Just because they dont have NCAA issues doesnt mean they follow the rules. Theres a reason Muss Will Wade and Nate Oats all hate each other and its not because they do things the right way.

Wade is a sleaze. Hadn't heard anything about Oats or Muss though.

Interesting. Our own BADGER loves him some Oats. And he detests cheaters.

Well, like I said, it's baked into SEC culture. It's not even something the coach can just say "I don't do things that way, cancel all of it". It's not up to the coach. It's fans, determined to "do things" that they think help the situation, on their own. The coaches just benefit from their work.

Judging by the 70+ pages pretty much solely dedicated to other head coaches at lower levels(minus the Mussheads), I think Gopherhole agrees.

However, it is fun thinking about the complete meltdown by everyone here if we do in fact go the “proven recruiter” route and hire a current assistant at the P6 level

I would have loved Musselmen until I saw that, "We've got to squeeze Colgate" video. Now I have my doubts.
Don't worry. There is only a .01% chance Musselman would take this job. Rumor has it that he's about to get a 4+ million dollar raise and a huge buyout.

His best players at Arkansas are freshmen, with the exception of former Indiana transfer Smith. Arkansas' 2022 class is loaded with 4 and 5 star players that all want to play at Arkansas.

Why leave a program that he has rolling for a total rebuild, mediocre arena, and a much harder place to recruit at? Guys use some logic, he's not coming here. We missed our chance years ago.

The same clueless clowns who wanted to keep Pitino 2 years ago, think NOW is the time to get Musselman.

Would like to see him get some head coaching experience before taking a P5 job, but his departure from UMN was what made it clear that Pitino was on borrowed time.

Gaard seems to think he knows the guy they're going to grab from multiple sources. I can't take it, somebody leak it!

He talked about a "mystery candidate" yesterday a friend of mine said. Someone on here said Thad Matta. I'm not sure how i would feel about that. He has a great resume...and is much younger than I thought. But he left tOSU because of health reasons weren't allowing him to recruit the way he wanted I thought. This kind of concerns me....

Agreed no Thad Matta for me. He seemed in rough shape at the end of his time at OSU.

There sure is a lack of confidence in the guy who brought PJ Fleck to Minnesota. I’m sure you were expecting that right?
I recall Coyle saying he always has a working list of coaches he would seek to hire. I suspect he has focused on his hoops list since the day he arrived. I was not a Coyle fan after the presser when he explained why he let Clays go, but he has been one of the better ADs that I can recall. I have hired a lot of people and even the best ones come in with weaknesses. The message board community appears to want the perfect coach. I think Coyle will land someone solid. And I suspect he checks Wiki before GH when updating his list.

So it's just that easy? You can just snap your figures and make the other team only be allowed to shoot 3pts?

I know you're not saying that, and hopefully you know I'm not being literally serious.

But .... my point about "don't just keep doing the same thing that isn't working" still stands.

In general, I have a disdain for the idea of "we worked on this game plan all week, and we're either winning with it or going down with this ship!".

I think "mystery candidate" has to require a little more imagination than Thad Matta. When I really want to stretch it, I think of maybe really big names that could be underappreciated where they are, and/or fish out of water despite big money and ready for a change of scenery. Otherwise, someone who is admired in coaching circles and just isn't popping up here, eg. Jeff Boals or someone like that. That's where a little bit of Coyle's creativity comes in.

Totally agree that Muss isn’t coming here. But what makes it “much harder” to recruit here? Not trying to knock Arkansas, but Minnesota is a better school in a supposedly better basketball conference in a much nicer city (although NW Ark is really pretty). Even granting your assertion that we have a mediocre arena, our facilities aren’t mediocre.

Really big fish....like someone who might be coaching in Texas and might want to get back to the midwest type of big fish? That would be my ultimate big fish but I don't see that as remotely possible.

This is the guy that comes to mind for me as well...

I still stick with my assertion that 5 years from now, Gates will be considered the best coach hired during this cycle.

I heard him state his source close to the program told him the likely target, that showed interest, and that Barrerio would like the hire (or has some wow to it).

Not sure if this list incorporates his statement as he made on air Tuesday (day after firing), but if so, that would be a heck of a clue.
