10 most interesting options to replace Richard Pitino

UNHIRED but at the same time as i minority i believe in merit based advancement.

Yeah? One poster thinks we'll hire Musselman or Dutcher. That's not the same as saying that breaking checking the ethnicities of the ALLEGED candidates is something that goes unsaid. It is always talked about now. That doesn't change the who one poster things will get hired. I can pretty much guarantee if Musselman was hired tomorrow, it would be talked about.

More importantly than all of this stuff, I agree with you 100%. I am all about merit-based hiring.

Agree. Anthony Grant is far more accomplished than several on these lists who happens to have different pigmentation.
Would love Grant over just about anyone on this list. Would he listen if Coyle calls?

"The Collegiate Coaching Diversity Pledge (CCDP) is an opt-in pledge by Division I athletics directors to include a diverse group of candidates in the finalist pool for head coach vacancies in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and football.
A “diverse pool” is defined as a group of finalists that includes at least one candidate from a diverse or traditionally underrepresented background and at least one candidate from a non-diverse background.
The CCDP reflects a commitment to ensure equal opportunity in the hiring of coaches, and to address the barriers that have prevented full participation of underrepresented minority groups.
How to Comply with the Collegiate Coaching Diversity Pledge
To maintain compliance with the Collegiate Coaching Diversity Pledge, athletic directors must have a finalist pool that includes at least one candidate from a traditionally underrepresented background and one non-diverse candidate.
The interview process for all finalist candidates must be substantially equivalent. For example, if the eventually-hired coach received both a phone, neutral site, and campus interview, all unsuccessful finalist candidates must also have participated in the same process."

Huh. No mention of merit, that I can see.

Might be interesting to see the qualifications Marky will require to be in the pool.

I'm out on Anthony Grant. Already struck out at P5 with Alabama. Had 1 very good year with Dayton. All others have been mediocre. Did well at VCU obviously but it seems like many coaches have successfully handled VCU lately. Not saying he couldn't do it, but would prefer others.

I'd take Muss obviously #1 and then I like Gates as the up and comer. Smith / Dutcher / Medved all solid options. I'm just a fan waiting to see how it plays out.

Craig Smith is still my #1 choice. Utah St is currently throttling Alford's Nevada team on FS1, and it's fun to watch.

There's a reason he immediately improves every team he's taken over. They just flat out outwork the other team. They have out-rebounded every team they've played this season. They move the ball really well and are a very good defensive team.

They'll sit 0.5 games out of first place after losing one of their best players in program history after last season.

They run good good offense. Back cuts, swing the ball side to side. Constant motion.

Not sure what you're whining about.

Not being from or living in Minnesota, the local angle is the toughest one for me to get a handle on. I am intrigued by Niko Medved and think he's done at least a solid job everywhere he's been, but if he wasn't a Minnesota guy would he be on the list? His overall head coaching record is just a hair above. 500. He has one 3 way tie for a conference title and no NCAA tournament berths on his resume. Furman is currently better than it was under him and the same can be said of Drake. I know both those jobs are tough (I know a lot about Drake specifically) and I recognize he did a good job in both places which enabled him to move on to better jobs. I am just saying as an outsider, his resume is clearly lacking compared to everyone on this list and depending on how this season plays out...we'd be hiring him hoping he'd have more success at Minnesota than he did in the Southern, Missouri Valley, or Mountain West. I'd love to hear from someone who might have some local knowledge as to why Niko stands out as a great option.

Dennis Gates concerns me a bit. Only a head coach for 2 years and the conference that he's in is realy bad. When I last checked, Jerry Palm had Cleveland State playing in one of the #16 play in games (assuming they win their conference tournament) and Joe Lunardi had them as just a regular #16 seed. So he's coaching at a low major, not a mid major. Like Niko, I see reasons to like Dennis too but the resume is a bit sparse compared to other candidates and that gives me pause.

is Jim Peterson interested? lead assistant for multiple WNBA championships. It is another old white guy with Minnesota connections-- feels like we have enough of those in the hopper already

Whining? Pointing out there is no mention of merit in the standards and wondering about marks qualifications is whining?
The initiative is about getting more exposure to underrepresented groups, its pretty straightforward.

The candidate still need prove their merits.

Gates from Cleveland St as well.

I think Gates is the best candidate of all. He hits all the right buttons with me: 2 time coach if the year, top of the conference record, likes defense and sharing the ball on offense, preaches values and education (sound familiar), great recruiter who already has a 2022/23 kid committed, and has big school experience. Listen to an interview with him—-very impressive. Oh yea, he is black.

Wow shot fired. I don't know Tony Liebert from Adam, but built you are pretty plugged in. To post something like that, I take it you have some information that Tony Siebert is a bit of a racist?

I think everyone should be considered for this job and the best man(or woman) should be hired regardless of skin color. Whoever can win us games, but I am interested to know the background on Liebert that he would keep Grant off the list because of skin color.

I’m liking Darian Devries the more I read about him.
I have researched Darian Devries some too, and am impressed with him. I view him as a valid option. I challenge all readers to keep an open mind about him. We need to keep Robbins as a foundation and maybe he can do that.

Not really plugged him. Just friends and associates with a few coaches and AD's. But have been around a very long time. Several strong candidates, which is the hidden home run ? And that is if we in fact the change is made.

If Musselman is Coyle's guy and the buyout drops May 1st, this board is going to be full of a lot of painful talk.

If Muss is the guy....the wait will be telling, and the recruiting hit will be worth enduring.

If it is Muss- the wait would be until Muss' team is out of the tourney. Then the two schools would work it out quickly. There would be zero benefit to Arkansas to holding him a day longer if he's settled on leaving. As to existing players, Coyle would be meeting with them and letting them know that we have a great coach worth waiting for coming in next year.

Some more on Gates that I'm reposting from the thread about potential black coaches:

Gates is interesting but a bit of a gamble given his short record of head coaching experience.

On the other hand:

1) He was a consensus top 100 recruit as a player;
2) Played at UC Berkley (not a great player but a consistent rotational player who showed continuous improvement);
3) He was a two-time academic All American;
4) Received the award for the top student athlete at Cal;
5) Voted team's most inspirational player at Cal;
6) Picked up his bachelor's degree in 3 years at Cal and went on to earn two master's degrees while being a GA;
7) Spent 14 years as an assistant at Cal, Northern Illinois, Nevada, and Florida State with 7 seasons at the last school;
8) Currently in his second year as head coach at Cleveland State with a big turnaround from his first year.

In short, he's paid his dues and earned everything he's gotten (a sharp contrast to Pitino).
