***OFFICIAL PURDUE AT MINNESOTA AFTERNOON IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Jesus, dude. You made a typo...just own it. We've all done it.

Didn't I read that you've been a fan of this team for 40 years or something like that? You're a grown ass man, act like it.

Snowflake.
I spelled it that way intentionally, duuuuuuude. The senior superiority writing duuuuude did what I expected. I am owning it.

Stop stalking.

There was no shuffle of the feet. The pivot foot was always established. However, the shot was cleanly blocked as well so there should have been a continuation of play from there.

Exactly. The shot was blocked anyway yet had painter crying about it after the game.

Yes. We need more tjan two players. Gabe and Johnson are starting to step up and that is huge.

Not surprised to see the gophers figure things out. We have through pitino's tenure seen the strength of his coaching is that he is able to figure out how to get the team to play their best. By the end of the season his teams' abilities are maximized. Nice win tonight engineered by an excellent coach and will hopefully provide the team with good confidence moving foward.

Also am still really annoyed by Painter's whining about the refs and moaning about carr's shot. I dont think he would be apologizing if purdue had won the game in similar fashion.
First, Pitino will never ever be thought of as an X & O coach. He couldn't draw up a play to save his life. Instead, he trusts his players to read the situation and attempt to improvise. That is just how he approached the game. His teams have played better as the season progresses, but when the game calls for precise execution, Pitino is a lost dog in a forest of trees. Last night, Pitino got incredibly lucky on a 24 foot bank shot that looked more like a scud missile launch than a shot. As an opposing coach, I would have shaken my head as well.

Not sure traveling was a good call at the end, but he got his shot blocked anyways

The last play of the game is why you don’t foul up 3 if you can just play good defense.

It was a good call. He moved his pivot foot before the shot. If this was a Purdue home game, it probably doesn't get called.

Certainly a bit of good fortune on that shot. If purdue makes that shot no one would ding painter. As i wrote, painter cleared out for ivey in the same manner to beat the buckeyes. Also, to act like the whole game hung on that shot is disingenuous. Credit to Coach Pitino, went head to head with supposedly the bigten apex coach and beat him.

At home, barely, against a team of Freshmen.
No matter how you slice it, Pitino has proven the epitome of an average coach who maintains mediocrity.

Traveling? Looked like a pretty clean move to get to his shot to me. I’ve definitely seen worse.

Gotta love Pitino saying he heard him say “bank” in the post game. Freaking lucky chuck it up there shot! At least he has the Sam Cassel nads to try it!

Gotta love pitino's humor. First thing he said in the postgame was how they have been working on that 3 point bank shot in practice.

Nah. 3 out of 5 years to the dance and would have been 4 out of 5 if not for injuries and lynch suspension. Not mediocre as was proved again last night.

Percentages r for nerds. The consummate buzzer beater! A highlight clip for the ages still enjoyed today.

Hahahahaha. It was crazy. Craziest part is I was living in Duluth and didn’t have the game on TV. Followed the game cast on ESPN. Nearly impossible to follow that way but I managed.

Where has he landed in the B1G standings? Remind us of the elite teams he has coached.

Pitino also said it was a joke that they’ve been working on banking 3s and Carr called bank.

So much projection.

I called you a stalker for going after built on virtually every post he makes, a fortiori, you call me a stalker for pointing out your typo.

A typo which you refuse to acknowledge in a poor attempt to look bigly, or amazing, or without weakness.

Snowflake.

So your standard is just getting to the dance then, gotcha. There are those of us who would prefer it be a higher standard, better then .500 in the conference, which we feel is a better and much tougher standard to meet. Along with meeting that standard, entry into the BIg Dance would come without sitting on pins and needles at the end of the year hoping to get in all the time with our consistent below .500 conf record.

If just looking at big ten standings through 8 seasons then u are correct. Again, to me 3 out of 5 and 4 out of 5 are determinative. I also was extremely impressed how pitino brought along the 2016-17 and 18-19 teams. Doubt if painter could have got that much out of those teams.

Did it on purpose and with intent. Executed to perfection.

Wouldve no doubt also got tourney wins in 2016-17 if hadnt lost springs and mason on one leg. How many tourney wins do you think the 17-18 team would have gotten. Check out how many tourney wins other big ten teams earned the last 4 seasons.

Now i do feel that recruiting is an issue. Just am very impressed how pitino gets more out of less.

First of all, am I missing something on Johnson? He was recruited as a grad transfer and his profile says he's a "redshirt senior." However, posters keep raising the possibility of him returning next year. It would be great, but how would that happen?

Secondly, the gophers and wolves have very similar offensive systems. Ball dominant lead guard, tons of iso, very little ball movement and very little off ball player movement. It's tedious as hell to watch. Yesterday, Purdue was constant motion and we were constant stand around.

Finally, Pitino has to go. He's a great communicator with the public and appears to run a clean program. He's just never been able to put a roster together and he's not exactly a master strategist. I had high hopes for him and, as someone else said, I thought he would grow into the job. Too bad it didn't happen.

Johnson (and all players) will be able to play in 21/22 if they so choose, and if they have a roster spot. Schools can have more than 13 schollies in 21/22, but don't have to, depending on how much their respective schools want to finance that sport. For a guy like Johnson, who is a RS Senior, basically four things can happen to him next year:

- He comes back to play for MN, on scholarship, and doesn't count against the 13.
- MN determines they don't want to fund more than 13 schollies, and he either takes up one of the 13, or he pays his own way as a walk-on.
- MN determines they don't want to fund his scholarship, as they have fulfilled their agreement at the end of the season, and he transfers to another school in 21/22.
- He plays professionally or retires from basketball.

Traditionally, a student-athlete has 5 years to play 4 years of their sport. An extra year means a current college student-athlete would have 6 years to play their 4 years. This means, NCAA student-athletes can compete in all or a portion of the 2020-21 season, but it won’t be counted against their years of eligibility depending on their division level specific eligibility rules.

For example, a D1 freshman athlete, whether they compete in the 2020-21 competition season or not, is eligible for an extra year of competition. Starting their sophomore year, this athlete competes in 100% of the season through senior year. After their senior season, this athlete’s eligibility count is 3 years and they decide to enroll as a fifth-year senior to compete in their fourth collegiate season. Upon the completion of their fourth competition season, this athlete has the option to compete for one final season, a fifth year, because the NCAA D1 had granted all 2020-21 athletes an extra year of eligibility. If this athlete returns for a fifth year, they will have been a member of the team and eligible to receive financial aid for six year, because their first year of competition didn’t count against their years eligibility.

For college coaches, this extra year of eligibility means roster needs may be different for the 2021-22 season. If 50% of the 2020-21 senior class decides to return for an additional year of competition, coaches will need to fill fewer roster sports and possibly re-evaluate the positions they are recruiting. This not only means competition for roster spots will be increasingly more difficult but playing time for committed recruits who play the same position as a returning senior may see less playing time during their rookie year of competition.

Winter sport student-athletes who compete during 2020-21 in Division I will receive both an additional season of competition and an additional year in which to complete it, the Division I Council decided. The same flexibility was provided to student-athletes after the spring season was canceled in 2020 and the fall season was seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Can underclassmen also potentially get a 5th season of eligibility? Never mind, just reread your post and looks like they do.

All players who were eligible to play and on the team for this season will get a "free" extension of their eligibility to 5 seasons in 6 calendar years, if they want it.

I believe the rule is going to be that: "super seniors" who return to play at the same school, will be allowed to not have their scholarship count against the limits (if the school chooses to fund such "extra" scholarships), but if the player transfers to a different school then his scholly will count against their limits.

I don't think the measuring stick of only NCAA's is very good, but just for the sake of argument, I've listed below. This includes seasons 2016-2019, as 2020 had no tournament. This is thus skewed slightly, as some of the teams with 0 wins / appearances would have gone in 2020, including Rutgers, Penn State, and Illinois. If you include 2020, it would basically put MN in a solid tie for the bottom third to quarter of the Big 10. Again, I'm not hell-bent on using this as a metric, but it doesn't exactly paint a more rosy picture than the overall Pitino era does.

Even if you exclude 2020, they're only ahead of some pretty putrid teams. NE has NEVER won a tourney game. NW has gone to the tourney ONCE. PSU has gone twice in the past 20 years. Rutgers hasn't gone in 30 years. Other than Illinois, the teams below them using your metric are historically terrible.

Last 4 years: Wins (appearances)
Michigan: 10 (4)
Purdue: 7 (4)
MSU: 6 (4)
Wisconsin: 4 (3)
Maryland: 3 (3)
Indiana: 2 (1)
Ohio State: 2 (2)
Iowa: 2 (2)
Minnesota: 1 (2)
Northwestern: 1 (1)
Illinois: 0 (0)
Penn State: 0 (0)
Nebraska: 0 (0)
Rutgers: 0 (0)

So mashburn will be listed as a freshman next season?

Yes, but it's not quite that simple. I had posted elsewhere on this a while back. But it's expected that scholly limits will only increase for the 21/22 season. So if you're a freshman this season, it's possible that a team will fulfil their scholly obligation to you after your 4/5 year (depending on if you redshirt), and not choose to keep you on for your 5/6 year. You could transfer and find a team willing to give you a scholly, but it may not be the team your're already on. So they made it seem like they waived a wand and gave everybody a "free" year, but it's not nearly that simple, especially if you're not a senior this year.

I think if Coyle is going to fire him though, Coyle probably already knows. I don’t think anything that occurs the rest of the year really impacts it.
I think how the season plays out will have a huge impact.
