All Things Chet Holmgren Recruitment Thread (Class of 2021, Gophers Have Offered)

I have only seen Chet play once and I was totally blown away. He would be a Coffey type forward, shooting guard, point guard (which is insane to say about a 7 footer). I would be thrilled to see him in maroon and gold.

Like I said, there would be mistakes. Looking at 14 years of data and prep schools and all that. also, he was born in California. Attended college in California.
No probs- recognize it was a lot of data!

If gophs end up being the chosen ones, tickets to Pitino Arena would be much harder to come by so that would be on the negative side.
Also, was thinking that with his slightness might be good if we had someone in practice who could toughen CH up some. I think there is a gritty transfer possibility to our immediate east who could give 'ol Chet the business in practice and get him ready for big ten ball. Makes a lot of sense if badgers dont allow the free year.

I mean Chet isn’t drawing 7000 more fans per game. I expect the season ticket base to take a big hit whenever fans are allowed back and general public doesn’t care about the gophers. Clearly.

Not so sure about that. If this season finishes well and with Chet next season would be very interesting to see attendance. Especially if gophs pick up a good guard and are highly rated coming into the season.

Lol!

2021-2022 Gopher Starting Lineup

PG: Both Gach 6'7" - (bump up for the program!)
SG: Chet Holmgren 7'1" - (How tall is he?)
SF: Isiah Ihnen 6'9"
PF: Treyton Thompson 6'11"
C: Liam Robbins 7'

Team Motto: "We are playing zone, shoot over us, don't expect any second shots."

or

"We are long but we are slow!"
Reminds me of the Randy Breuer years back in the late 70's and early 80'. We had the tallest front court in basketball (NBA or college). 7-3, 6-10, 6-10.

Probably a pretty safe bet

I feel like its easy to make that prediction even with no inside knowledge. Holmgren’s recruitment has been pretty close to the vest so maybe just taking a shot at it.

I will edit and say he could be correct and I wouldn’t be surprised but my guess is he just picked what is perceived to be the most likely

Especially that guy, he has a history of changing CB pick a few hours to a day or two before the commit. He might be right, but if Chet chooses any other school, he’ll be right there to change his pick to “look” correct.

Yes sir. They all do it. I know one guy in all the internet sites that coaches even go to for evals and that is Bossi. He is plugged in with information and even he is not sure what Chet will do. That means that Chet does not know and he has several fun options. The other thing these guys do that is deceiving is bumping rankings up as soon as elite programs offer.

Are you of the school of thought that he would benefit more from the G-League program or do you think a year (or more?) of college would be more beneficial?

I used to think G league would be great because he could and might want that 500,000 with full time training and coaching and no restrictions. Now i am not sure what is up with the bubble or the coach he would get. I can not see him being interested in more than one year of college. Then it becomes which coach is best for him ? What about you ?

Interesting note on the coach at the G league level. I guess I just kind of took for granted that the G League trainers would be at least as effective at skill development as any he could possibly have at the college level. Would he gain other intangibles by playing for a year under a guy like Few at the college level?

College is better for building a brand. More exposure. ESPN highlights, NCAA tourney, name brand school, etc. G league would be better for him physically, but that isn’t all that matters.

I see Chet needing two years post high school to be NBA ready. I just think physically he still lacks some stuff. Durant took a year at Texas but is more athletic than Chet, but probably the best physical comparison.

No doubt about the brand. If that is a big deal for Chet he should pick a blue blood. They get way better ratings abd get to final 4's. Somebody smarter than i am on these issue said that Zion increased his value by over 100 million by going to Duke over UVA who offered way before and had a strong relationship with at 16. Ironically, UVA NOT DUKE won it all. But for brand enhancement there was no comparison.

Holmgren will be 19 in a couple months. I see one year of college he would 20 the NBA likes the younger player.

This stat is underrated too. Good example is Suggs is older than Anthony Edwards right now by a year. NBA guys do pay attention to this stuff

Exactly. Chet is unique. People like what they have never seen before. Him blocking 13 shots and knocking down 3s will be all over Twitter and ESPN. I can’t name one kid who has forgone college to go to the g league and I follow that stuff.

Jalen Green and Isiah Todd took the money. Got 500,000 or so. That is viable for Chet.

Definitely viable but if you’re him, $500k likely isn’t worth the exposure you lose out on. Average sports fan knows who the top college hoopers are. Average sports fan has never heard of Jalen Green or Isiah Todd at this point.

$500K and building your rep with those that follow basketball >= one year of college publicity

If he goes #1 people millions more will know him instantly. G League is not a bad choice. Auston Matthews did the equivalent in hockey and it didn't hurt a bit.

Chet would likely get at least 500,000 and a 7 figure shoe deal to train with NBA level talent everyday. I am the last person to ask because to me it would be 4 -5 years of college at a elite school, a masters degree, a championship perhaps but that is not going to happen.

I get what you’re saying but the money for some guys is too important. I have no idea on the Holmgren family financial situation but if Chet can get paid, get paid. All about people making their money when they can. That said, he may make more by going to college for 1-2 years and then turning pro

Doubt it. If he goes college it's just cuz he wants the traditional one and done experience, which is a fine choice.

You’ve got to think if we finish towards the top of the BIG, and have a nice tourney run (Sweet 16 or better), we would be very enticing to Chet as he could slide in at the wing and get the shots Carr has been taking.

A real shot at a special team in Gopher history and legend status.

In an earlier post someone referenced Kris Humphries getting boo’d at Target Center. That was because they finished dead last in the conference that year.

They were BRUTAL. I attended every home game that year and his selfishness was evident. That team had a roster significantly better than the 3-13 record in conference.

His unicornish-ness is most similar to Zion.

not that he is a similar player....
Just the Twitter and instagram highlights that are crazy to watch

Not sure anyone has ever seen a dude like Chet, so I get what you mean about Zion
