When I think of out of state colleges I would like to go to when I was 18, the small Jesuit school in eastern Washington doesn't make the list. They get just as much bad weather as we do! (maybe not as cold, but still!)

Exactly why we should expect and demand more out of our program. Gonzaga’s proof that if you develop and win, you’ll be in contention for the best prospects in the country no matter where you are. It takes time but nothing’s keeping us from reaching that point.

I've never believed they don't cheat to some extent.....especially when they had a Japanese player who, as a sophomore, said that last year as a freshman he couldn't understand 70% of what he heard. (I'm paraphrasing but that's what he said)

How does having players who aren’t native English speakers mean that they’re cheating? And what exactly would they have been doing to be cheating? Teaching him English?

Sounds to me like great coaching through non-verbal methods and simplified terms and being open to having players from diverse backgrounds, as long as they can play ball.

Everyone who wins gets accused of cheating by some fans of teams that do not win. Not even a shred of a hint that some of these coaches have ever cheated. In fact they are lauded for running clean programs.

They would never get accepted at the U, maybe not cheating but different standards make for an uneven playing field, a player like that would have to take an English language class before being enrolled.

Ok, thanks. I would have thought that one of the many translation apps out there would have made that a non-issue, at least in the classroom. I guess not.

For those unfamiliar, Holmgren is quite possibly the unicorniest prospect in the ’21 class. (Yes, I just made up that adjective.) The Minneapolis native is a 7-footer with guard skills, a smooth 3-point stroke and elite shot-blocking ability, while his frame is as skinny as a flamingo’s legs. He’s one of my favorite players to watch in high school right now, and he’ll certainly be in the top five of the next edition of The Athletic 40. (Coming soon, I promise!)

Holmgren’s recruitment has been a tough one to read. Neither 247Sports nor Rivals has registered any official predictions on a college choice, which is unusual for this late in the game. Holmgren’s father Dave, played at Minnesota, though it’s unclear how close the family is to the hometown school. (I recently asked a Gophers source where they stood with Chet. The response: “Don’t know. Don’t think he’s making a decision any time soon.”).

Gonzaga looks to be in pretty good shape for a couple of reasons. Holmgren visited Spokane before the pandemic shut down travel. And his friend and high school teammate, Jalen Suggs, will be the starting point guard as a freshman for the Bulldogs. Suggs is most likely a one-and-done candidate, though, so the two probably won’t reunite in college. But if Suggs — whose father has also coached Holmgren on the grassroots circuit from a young age — enjoys his experience under Mark Few, that can’t hurt.

Holmgren’s father told me that Chet will only go to a school that will play him on the perimeter and knows how to develop modern big men. That’s another point in Gonzaga’s favor, as Few and his staff have excelled in that area. I also think Holmgren would be an obvious candidate for the G-League developmental team. He’s a unique player who could fit the NBA style, so getting him that program and focusing on gaining strength makes a ton of sense.

Right now, I’d still give Gonzaga the edge if he does go to college. But I’ll take a pass on the pinching, Andrei, if it’s all the same to you.

Whatever happened to that crystal ball prediction for Chet to go to the Gophers?
 

Judging by the 2 big men recruited I would guess Minnesota has given up on Chet. No home state loyalty anymore. Chet is one blown knee away from being another tall basketball player with only a high school diploma.

Wow ... I certainly hope he doesn't blow a knee out.

But I will say, his arms and legs are like sticks.
 




I'm more optimistic about Chet then I ever was with Jones x1, Suggs, Trent, Garcia, and even Holloman now. If we get another big it'll help our chances.
 

I can appreciate people who want to hope for the best, but we aren't getting Chet. Every single recruiting article on him I've seen has yet to have the Gophers as even a remote possibility. Not to be Debbie downer but we aren't recruiting centers to play next to him, we're getting guys so we have bigs without him. Its just better if we all come to grips with this ha

I'd even go: what has Gopher basketball done (consistently) under Pitino, to deserve Chet's (and his father's) serious consideration?

For most blue-chippers, being the flagship of the state you grew up in, is not going to cut it.
 

Considering Minnesota gave his dad a four year scholarship with bad knees They should sho.w some loyalty to Minnesota.

Truth.
 

He'll keep us in his top 3 whatever stupid thing it is. That's the weird, brutal "tradition" that in-state blue-chippers somehow feel they're obligated to do. Pay homage to the tundra gods, or whatever.

Just makes it feel like that much more of a slap in the face, knowing the maroon ballcap is just a prop for looks.
 

Chet is an unreal talent. He needs some serious physical development. The best place to do that? No clue. He is really fun to watch though. As gifted of a shot blocker as I've ever seen.
