Black Iowa players critical of strength coach

Wonder what the other 400+ black players think about the situation at Iowa? If Doyle is indeed let go, guarantee you he will have another job in 5 minutes.

THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS IS TO DEFUND COACHES. GET RID OF THEM ALL. LET THE PLAYERS RUN THE SHOW.

It is hard to keep this conversation just about the Iowa players' criticism of the strength coach. It underscores a greater social disparity and injustice.
Lawsuits are being drawn up right now.

One of the questions I would have - were white players criticized for things like hair styles, tattoos, and clothing? The early tweets seem to be suggesting that only black players were being criticized for those issues.

That would be the key in knowing whether it was a racial issue, a cultural issue, or just old-fashioned coaches using old methods on today's athletes.

Other than the Pryor incident with the coach telling him that black people don't like boats, none of the former players speaking out gave one example of racism. Im not saying there was or wasn't racism, but Iowa is pretty damned white, 90% to 4% black. If you are coming to Iowa to play football from Chicago, the south or other traditional black cultures, what do you think you are going to walk into?
There have been a lot of other stories that came out about the coaches being racist, I'm just assuming that you haven't paid a ton of attention to the situation thus far.

What silly humans, expecting to be treated like humans.

Indeed, they should’ve known better, going to a place like Iowa.

Wouldn't be so sure about that. I would think a lot of high level schools would think twice about hiring someone who was let go at his previous job due to possible race related issues, especially in our current climate right now.

Kirk’s name has been brought up several times. He’s not the one making the comments, but he obviously knew about it.

Wonder if NCAA would consider a show-cause penalty? That would guarantee no college would touch him.

Pretty lame down in Iowa. Wonder if all the recruits believe this?

Lawsuits pending. Players will get paid iball and b-ball. Many of us knew this was coming - kids were used to fill coffers of the ‘haves’.

I thought this May 13 tweet by Doyle is ironic considering all that has come up recently.

And the escalation continues in Iowa City.

Ferentz apparently sounded pretty contrite and open to discussion at the presser today. Doyle? Not so much.

This is just beginning imo...

Kirk is doing a lot of covering for his son. I think that is his first priority right now.

I personally have no time for his son. He has built his own grave in my opinion. Daddy will go down with him if he keeps covering up for him.

I'm guessing Ferentz will make every effort to confine the discussion to Doyle and Doyle only. If Ferentz The Younger also ends up in extremely hot water over this, Ferentz The Elder will be faced with some really hard choices.

At that point, Kirk might just say, "Screw it. I had a good run. I'm sick of this stuff", and resign, rather than fire his own son.

Kirk's getting up there in age.

The beginning ... of Doyle getting shit-canned.

I mean, Bobby Bowden fired his son, I think? But obviously that was purely a football move. Not like this.

Do you love Iowa football more than your own son? That's tough. Might be time for a new head coach and clean out the whole staff. It had to happen eventually.

Yeah.

If this was, say, Year 5 of the Ferentz era it would be harder to predict what might happen. But Ferentz is 64 years old, and while he's proved himself to be a solid coach and can point to an impressive list of accomplishments, I can't see him taking Iowa any higher than he already has. It's hard to picture, say, a B1G Championship in Ferentz's future. Eventually (and inevitably), he'll see that he's reached a point of diminishing returns and decide that he's had enough. Having to deal with this shitstorm — especially if his son becomes a focus — just might push him to that conclusion a little quicker.

Found this story from CBSsports about everything. Sorry if it has already been posted. Found it interesting that over 40 ex-players have come forward with allegations and there have even been a few white players mixed in as well, so it isn't just a race issue but a much broader cultural problem within the program.

The other telling thing in all this is there are not a ton of former players coming to Doyle's aid. There is a section in the story about a white player with ADHD who was mocked. He mentions Doyle by name but also talks about another unnamed coach who mocked his intelligence on a regular basis and they went so far in the program to nickname him Simple Jack after the character in Tropic Thunder (not a flattering or fun nickname by any stretch of the imagination).

Some of the old school types will probably just view it is locker room talk but if the allegations that are being leveled by a lot of these players prove to be true Doyle is done for and there is a very good chance Kirk doesn't survive this one either.

They did have that great 2015 season. Shoulda coulda beat Mich St to win the conf and go to the CFP.

But seems most years they can’t get by Wisconsin, and now here comes Minnesota.

Yes.

Wisconsin is always one step ahead. And Minnesota now has a young, energetic, successful coach to contend with, both on the field and on the recruiting trail. I can't imagine having to face the brutal recruiting grind at age 64, 65 and beyond.

And then, if you beat the odds and win the B1G West.. it's on to Indianapolis to face Ohio State. Ouch.

Pretty daunting.

Agreed coaches cannot talk to players like this in 2020. I’d wager some players are in many cases far more verbally vicious to each other but there is obviously a lesser power difference. It sounds like Doyle and B. Ferentz both use locker room humor at other’s expense, I’d guess partly because it’s part of their personality and partly to be “one of the guys” , Jr High or middle school antics and mindset not befitting adult multimillionaires and mature leaders. Poor performers and lackadaisicals will have to be motivated by other kinder methods or cast off w/o derogatory explanation going forward. Respect should be primary.

If you mean another job within football, I'd take that bet. IMO, he won't be coaching anywhere anymore.
