Former Minnesota head coach Tracy Claeys added to Hokies staff, reunites with Kill

Jerry Kill lied to us when he told us he could take his meds and do an excellent job as coach. He knew that was not true when he said it in order to land the job. When the inevitable train wreck arrived we were left with the mess. That makes Jerry a major league liar in my book, for whatever that is worth. That others wish to employ him today is their problem (or not), not mine.
Wow....so angry

I wasn’t thrilled with his brand of football. It wasn’t very exciting to watch. He did do a fantastic job of getting this program headed in the right direction. They’re both not coaching at the U. I could care less where they are, what they’re doing, if they’re rubbing peanut-butter on themselves, or playing pattycake.

By mess do you mean a team that won 9 games despite being coached by someone that most on here think was a terrible HC?

Yes, that is exactly what I meant including the bit about the terrible head coach.

The team has moved into the next higher tier and is in a better place overall right now vs under that regime but it’s always interesting to see how much vitriol some have for TC. Every former coach has its detractors and absolutely fair to point them out.

Claeys on field missteps were surely no worse than PJFs this year. Off the field fair to criticize Claeys but interestingly the same people give Coyle and Kaler a pass. Compare and contrast Wisconsin's approach to Quintez Cephus with how MN treated it’s students. This, despite the accusers sueing the school after Cephus was reinstated (the case went to trial and the accusers were shown to be fibbing). Kaler’s and Coyle’s panic in the face of the prospect of facing hostile media, combined with a horrific lack of communication helped lead to the fiasco that ensued. Has anyone heard a peep about Cephus all year? Nope.

I doubt the media in Madison is as dogged on these things as the Strib, PP, etc. That probably caused some of that panic.

Very few Minnesotans can imagine the sexual abuse scandal that became a nationwide story and public relations disaster during the Kill/Claeys regime ever happening during Fleck's time as coach. There was a culture problem with the team that Claeys contributed to and he did nothing to help clean up the mess. In fact, he made it worse. He left the job to clean it up entirely to Coyle and Kaler.

Jerry Kill and Tracy Claeys took the Gophers to the two "best" bowl games the program has been to in the past 58 years, until this season. They were good dudes when employed here and left the place better than they found it athletically and academically after Tim Brewster's fiasco. Why so much hate in this thread?

One of the negative posters should probably answer, but I'm pretty sure the perception for some would have been different had Kill not burned his bridges with his negative comments on the current staff and administration. Being a prick publicly doesn't help.

What would help me is if you could list all past MN coaches and then mark each with a YES or NO on if a scandal could have happened during their time as coach.

The best way to show you REALLY support PJ is to trash previous coaches.

Whenever there is a new thread trying to convince us what wonderful coaches, leaders of young men, and human beings Kill and Claeys are more than a few of us are going be compelled to disagree. Not everyone thinks they walked on water during their time with the Gophers. Not by a long shot.

If PJ Fleck is the coach here for long enough, there will be a noteworthy off-field incident. No matter how squeaky clean of a Row The Boat culture he runs around the football facilities. There's only so much a head coach can do to stop 17-23 year olds from doing dumb stuff 24/7.

Exactly. Cruze doesn't get it. He never will.

Let me say it again. If anyone in GopherHole doesn't want to see posts trashing Kill and Claeys then don't start threads and make posts telling the rest of us how great they were and how much you like them. This is a very simple concept. Almost everyone should be able to understand it.

Huh?

Kill trashed the U after they were very supportive of him. Clary’s implied numerous times that he was one of Jer’s disciples. I wish they would just go away. They helped in turning the corner here but totally torched that bridge left here. See ya!!

You are absolutely correct. I was a huge defender of both until they took the low road. Over...and out. You get what you give. It makes 0% sense that these two end up at the worst academic school in their conference. I find it hard to believe this is a culture change...it’s a cash grab. They will both end up resigning due to a “difference in philosophy...”.

Hilarious.

Ol Jer’ and Tracy better hit the recruiting trail. VT’s 2020 class ranks 86th nationally. Only Arkansas has a lower ranked class among P5 teams.

Thank goodness we can have yet another thread with the Kill vs. Fleck bickering. We have so few of those around here. At least these pointless arguments stay more contained to specific threads that reference Kill or Claeys as opposed to every single thread on the board. Good times.

Yeah but who do you think would win in a shot put contest?
