2018 Gopher Baseball

Man bunting again, when neither team can stop the other. He is a great recruiter and developer but has this weird fascination with voluntarily giving up outs.

We lead big ten in bunts by a wide margin. Which makes no sense with our high powered offense. Just stop.

Amazing game and series. Go gophers

Who is this second pitcher and I wish he would have came out to start the third inning. Much sharper than Stevenson.

Jackson Rose. Senior from Omaha. Good numbers for the year and has a live arm.

Gophers are really pouring it on now. Bases loaded with only one out and a 10-5 lead. McDevitt didn't even flinch with that ball coming at him. Took the pitch like a pimp and got us another run.

Clearly a different game now for us. Don't have to press so hard. On a note as to the bunting. Gophers do a pretty good job with it in my opinion using aluminum bats. I would think we would have had a few more hits with it if the ball wouldn't roll quite as far.

Whatever it takes to win. I’m lucky being on the West Coast. This beats any show on TV.

Must be doubly nice watching UCLA go down! On to the Supers!:clap::clap:

Congrats boys. Nice 2 wins against UCLA. Next week will be super tough, but we're hot...

Nicely done, except for that last sequence of a couple batters, seemed like they were reeeally tight. Understandable.

It is nicely done for the most part. Got that monkey off their back and also hopes will help with recruiting. Good job Gophers and get er done Gophers! Surprise them!

Damn right. As you can imagine, I know a few Bruins fan. They’re hardcore. Loved every minute of it.
I’m now watching the gophers opponent....Oregon State. They look tough.

Does anyone have an idea of when the super regional games begin? I can't seem to find the dates anywhere.

IT WORKS! The bunting is part of our high powered offense it puts pressure on the other teams. They've done it all year long and will continue to do it. They aren't all sacrifices some guys do it on their own and they don't strictly bunt or strictly hit away like some teams do it is a feel and situation and 14 has been very good about picking spots all year long.

Yeah, they're very very good. Still, we have a team built for a Super Regional format, so we have that going for us.

The guys found a way to accomplish another one of the goals they set at the beginning of the season tonight. It wasn't always pretty especially pitching wise and defensively but guys picked each other up and kept plugging away to get the win. Great outing by Jackson Rose getting the win going 4 innings allowing 5 hits 1 run walking 1 and striking out 2. 14 probably should've turned the game over to Rose after Jake Stevenson walked the leadoff hitter in the 3rd after I believe he had the hitter 0-2. You could tell Stevenson definitely had some nerves after he got that tapper to lead off the game and shortarmed it into the ground allowing the runner to reach instead of running it over and getting the out. Stevenson's stuff is decent and he got in trouble leaving a couple pitches up and then he tries to pick too much and doesn't challenge and throw enough strikes. He also was a little unlucky as was Rose UCLA had to have 5+ little bloopers get down just over the infielders head or just in front of a outfielder. Stevenson ended up going 2+ innings 4 hits 5 runs 2 walks and 1 hit batter. Brett Schulze didn't have great command but had a good outing with 2 scoreless innings 1 hit and 3 strikeouts. SR Fred Manke finished things off pitching the 9th and allowing 2 runs on 2 hits 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Fred probably should've had a better line as there was a fly ball the Alex Boxwell catches 95% of the time that dropped off his glove in the 9th and he also had the guy struck out twice that ended up hitting the double to score the 2 runs. Offensively everybody contributed. Homeruns from SRs Toby Hanson and Alex Boxwell. Hanson had 3 RBI and Boxwell had 4. 2 hits each from Luke Pettersen, Ben Mezzenga, Terrin Vavra, and Boxwell. This team has definitely had a great year and will celebrate what they have done so far but I also know in no way are they satisfied yet.

I am glad I took the time to go to Friday and Saturday's games. It has been a special week-end for Gopher baseball. Congratulations to Coach Anderson, staff and all the players. Thank you.

Indiana trying to stay alive in Texas. Indiana had their first 2 men reach in the bottom of the 9th down 1 but their 8 hitter couldn't get the bunt down. Indiana got lucky though as the next batter walked on 4 pitches and now Texas is bringing in their Friday night guy who threw 70 pitches on Friday.

Back to back strikeouts end it and Indiana is eliminated with a 3-2 loss. The first guy got screwed with a couple of strike calls that were in the other batters box. Not even close to strikes.

Absolutely right. Part of it is the matchups. For example, if you got a guy who has struggled against a certain type of lefty, like with Coffey tonight, why not force the defense to make a play and worst case scenario you get a productive out. It is about knowing your players and what they can do and can't. It is not as simple as watching Moneyball and saying that bunting is dead.
