Schad is reporting that Gill, Holtz Jr., Brewster and Butch Jones are the finalists for the Kansas job. No word on who the sources are and whether the source is Brewster himself or his friends.

Link?

It's not that I don't trust you. I'm just lazy. And a drunk.

Someone go sneak into Gibson Nagurski and see if Brew is there or if Maturi has come out of retirement and is running practice.

Gonna be a fun Insight bowl press conference tomorrow

It was on the College Footbal Live show on ESPN today, so I doubt if there is a "link" per se. Its being discussed all over the KU Scout site, so they saw it too.

I can't believe Kansas would be this foolish. Even making him a finalist looks bad. Maturi will probably pay for the airfare to get him down to interview.

If Brewster is a finalist, than most likely he's already interviewed. If true, I can't blame him in the face of Maturi's lack of support. Also, if true, Brewster's price tag just went up for what should have been an easy and inexpensive extension.

Yeah, Maturi's crazy like a fox ... NOT!

Maybe Kansas appreciates a coach that can upgrade the talent level of their roster and bring enthusiasm to their program? Maybe their fanbase is willing to wait for said talent to mature and give their coach a chance to succeed.

IMPOSSIBLE! 3 years is all you need to judge a college coach, when his first recruiting class are RSFr ! Maybe KU could get Tony Dungy?

I hate you but this made me burst out laughing.

According to the Star Tribune poll which asked fans "Do you hope Brewster gets the job down in Kansas, there are 93 per cent of the Minnesota public who would agree with this sentiment.
No way is Kansas stupid enough to hire Brewster. Mark it down.

Bonerrio is going to have a field day with this one and, regrettably, traffic will be slow. Touchdown Jackrabbits!

Well, now what happens if he doesn't get the KU job and doesn't get extended? A friend of mine just brought up a good point - in that scenario, why would/should Brewster expect/be expected to stick around as a lame-duck for another year?

Now, it's almost as if Brewster has to get the job (I think he would succeed down there) or Maturi is going to fire him. In which case, here are guys I hope we would talk to:

Butch Jones (although it wouldn't look good if KU hired Brewster over him, no would it?), Central Michigan
Temple's Coach (can't think of his name, but I'd imagine if he'd leave there for here, he'd probably leave here for somewhere else)
Dan McCarney (form ISU coach and I believe now the Associate Head Coach at Florida)
Glen Caruso - St. Thomas (HUH?!!!)

McCarney would be my top choice.

"Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you got till its gone"?

I can't believe this is true. I guess this is a delayed reaction of disbelief, but I just assumed the rumors yesterday were smoke and mirrors. I guess Joe Schad lends this "rumor" some credibility.

Wait, this can't be. Nanne told us that Kansas had no interest. And Doogie told us that Louie would know. ESPN should have asked Louie or Doogie.

Al Golden is the Temple Head Coach. Nice resume with Big 10 playing experience at Penn State and a nice college assistant coaching resume.

McCarney wouldn't be a bad choice.

I tend to agree with your basic points. This is going to make it really tough for Brewster to come back in any capacity.

Temple's coach is Al Golden. UVa considered him, but was too enamored with the Richmond coach. He can obviously recruit to MN if he can recruit to Temple, but I dont' know much about him. I would have him and Butch Jones on my list but they would both be behind Edsall, Cutcliff and Sumlin. I think all three are getable for the right $ amount, which would be far more then Brew makes but nothing like what Tubby does.

If I were AD at Kansas I would include Brewster as a finalist (if he was willing) just as a display of progress. When Glen Mason left Kansas to come to Minnesota it was universally considered to be a vertical move.

How cool would it be to say, "Hey, look... we now have the power to come in and hire away your coach. Oh- but guess what? We don't even want him. Ha ha."

It's really a mess, and disappointing because really, nobody wins here.

IDIOTS

All of you that are screaming for Brewster to be gone are flat out idiots. He's not even done with his 3rd season.
This isn't the NFL, there's no free-agency and we have very little money compared to the schools that are at the level we want to be at.

oh, now I get. I'm an idiot. stupid me, why couldn't I figure that out.

I agree with that statement. But I think the thing is broken beyond repair and duct-taping it back together for one season before throwing it out won't help anyone. See Monson, Dan 2006.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I'm not saying Brewster should be fired based upon his performance. I'm saying Maturi and Brewster have put themselves in this position - if he comes back now, he has to sell himself to recruits that he is in fact committed to the program and not just willing to leave for any job (I wouldn't consider Kansas anything more special than the U of M). How do you do that at this point?

Maturi, not willing to suck it up and extend Brewster for even one more year, essentially encouraged Brewster to look around (and if he didn't expect Brewster to, then he's an idiot).

Negotiating ploy or not, if Brew gets hired at KU I'm sure he will have done so for a significant raise, will not have the same dumpy media to sell to, and is still in a major conference (w/Texas!), and closer to Texas, where he still obviously has ties.

So, if Brewster gets the job, we now have to find a new coach. If he doesn't, we have a coach who clearly pursued an arguably lateral move. What players are going to be willing to committ to someone who they now know for sure isn't going to be here long-term?

Either way, the people that lose here are us, the fans.

Pretty much my precise sentiments. I'm no Brewster boob, but neither do I want him fired right now. I think a coach should automatically get five years short of the "rape a nun on the cathedral steps" kind of thing. Almost any coach deserves to see his recruits go through the system before a judgment is made.

What has happened here falls short of my "cathedral steps" acid test, but it's pretty obvious there is a major breakdown between Brewster and Maturi. Brewster does have to answer to Maturi and if he can't do that, it becomes nearly impossible for anything positive to happen.

At base level, I think Brewster does want out of here, but he won't quit on the team and the state if he doesn't get the KU job. Surrounded by a solid staff, I still think Brewster could be a decent college coach. I credit most of his mistakes to rushing into the job headlong and not being more deliberate in assembling his coaching staff and building his vision for the team.

A thoughtful and compelling argument.

I agree. As I posted earlier, in divorce lawyer parlance, this is "irreconciliable differences". Doesn't really matter if its Maturi's fault or Brewster's. It takes two to tango, anyway. And ultimately, Maturi made the call to hire Brewster, so its his mess. Sort of like if you go to Vegas, get really drunk, and marry a crazy stripper. You're the one left with the $12,000 Mastercard bill.

RBtL of Maturi's show of non-support to Marcus Fuller, this relationship is doomed. It can only end in a couple of ways:

1.Brewster leaves for another job. IMHO, this is clearly what Maturi was hoping for, if only to save the buyout money and solve a problem of his own making. His comments to Fuller were basically "don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out"

2.Fire Brewster now while there's still some competent coaching candidates out there. Maturi has to realize, though, that this sends a terrible message to the next coach on pulling the trigger after 3 years.

3.Hope that we get blown out in our bowl game so he has an excuse to S-can Brewster like he did Mason. And we're left with a situation like going shopping for an X-mas tree on December 24th. Odds are you're not gonna get a tree that looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. And our 2010 recruiting class is effed

4.Grin and bear it through 2010. Maybe Brewster turns it around? Or at least learns how to manage time outs Sort of like hoping your fat girlfriend magically loses 30 lbs overnight. Otherwise buh-bye, Brewster

Obviously, there are differences of opinion here. I'm secretly hoping that Maturi has another Tubby up his sleeve, and he's just biding time to make it a done deal. If he does kick Brewster to the curb, Maturi should remember the old wing-walker's motto: "Don't let hold of what you got till you've grabbed something better".

I really think the entire Brewster fiasco is just evidence that a lot of people (and the media) in MN are completely clueless as to how college football works. This is not the NFL, we don't have any chance of drafting the best new guy in the league or signing him via free agency. To turn a program around takes time and a great amount of patience. I am not saying that Brewster should be given a 5 year extension, but the thought that he should be let go before he even has a full class to go through his system is laughable. It is incredibly difficult to turn an average-less than average program into a Big 10 power.

Barry Alvarez won at Wisconsin and they have a statute of him in front of Camp Randall. Kirk Ferentz won at Iowa and he has been rumored for countless NFL jobs and high profile college jobs. My point being, that it really takes a special/incredible coach and some time to make that kind of turnaround a reality.

I think our program was has been so rinkydink for so long (playing in Dome, Wacker years, and the accepted mediocrity of the Mason years), that I think people expect a turnaround that the Vikes were able to do (with drafting Peterson and trading for Favre and Allen). Keep in mind the Gophers couldn't simply "draft" Ingram and "trade" for Tebow and Suh.

It doesn't help much that the media has always been very negative about Gopher football. It was even like that in the Mason years, and I think it is pretty common with a major university in a major metro. area (U of Washington for example). But you have guys like Doogie in here pimping Ferentz third season when any logical fan would say it was about even with the Gophers third season.

I guess I am sort of rambling, but my point is that it is difficult to turn around a program, but every team i've seen turnaround from a where the Gophers are to something better have been patient. It is difficult to drastically improve your program. Look at how long Michigan had been at tOSU's heals (and how long tOSU was at Michigan's heals before that), when was the last time Ole Miss or Mississippi St. won the SEC....it's a very tough thing to do, and when you hire someone to accomplish a difficult task, you need to give him a fair shake.
