Mitch Leidner's Finale

anyone want to create the 'I told u Leidner Stinks' I told you so thread so we can end these multiple threads.

Mitch is a good, tough kid who is way over his head in Division 1 as a QB. He might have been a decent TE. That said, I agree that if Claeys and the staff felt they had a better option they'd go with it. It's not his fault he's an inaccurate passer, who is marginally athletic and makes poor decisions and reads.

So you think 57% career completion percentage is "in over his head as a DI QB"?
He may not be tops in the Big Ten, but his career completion percentage is essentially the same as Brian Cupito, Cory Sauter, Adam Weber, and Asad Abdul-Khaliq. Weber and Sauter saw time on NFL rosters. So, you may not like Leidner, but he's in the same realm as what many would consider some very good Gopher quarterbacks. PS - Leidner's completion percentage is 10% higher than Rickey Foggie's.

I just listened to episode 66 of Gophers Illustrated. OK, i agree Leidner stinks.

I rarely rip on Leidner, but his statistics are dwarfed by Cupito and Abdul-Khaliq's numbers. They are awful comparisons for him.

You could argue Sauter and Weber. There are obviously counter arguments (they played on much worse teams and offenses), but you could at least make that argument statistically.

Statistically, Cupito and Abdul-Khaliq were clearly better than Leidner.

Leidner and AAK have almost identical stats. Don't know how you can say Leidner is dwarfed. Cupito has more yards but aside from that pretty similar too.

Can everyone please stop trying to use total yards and TDs as a measuring stick. It is so flawed it just makes you look silly.

My preferred metric is spirals thrown.

OK, I'll play along, what's your preference?

How about anything that is normalized and doesn't slant everything to who had more attempts. Fair enough? Isn't that one of the main reasons they invented the QBR?

BTW - you weren't the only one who thought CR15 was second best and not a pawn to save redshirt season on Croft/Green. It is OK. You don't need to quote and challenge every post I make now in some attempt to feel better about yourself.

Little upset?

Total yards is flawed... YPA is much more accurrate, and Abdul-Khaliq blows Leidner away in that as well.

Yards per attempt. Leidner 7.1 AAK 7.9
Adjusted passing yards per attempt. Leidner 6.5 AAK 7.8
Passing Efficiency Rating. Leidner 122.4 AAK 138.5
TD/Int. Leinder 33/27 AAK 55/25

In what world are those almost identical? Something should also be said for AAK getting better as his college career went on, not worse

EDIT - You can run the same numbers for Cupito vs Leidner, and they aren't even close. A full yard per attempt more, much better rating, td/int ratio, etc.

Cupito and AAK >>> ML7. Who debates that? They were both >>> than Weber too.

I think in honor of senior day tomorrow there should be a 24 hour ban on posts bashing Leidner regardless of what happens in the game. Heck at this point we could just have Gopherhole write the thread ahead of time.

1. Someone will complain about how Leidner played in the game
2. Some will chime in that Leidner is not a D1 level QB or the worst QB ever to play the game.
3. Others will defend Mitch with stats and win percentage.
4. Others will point out that the coaches are to blame for Mitch being the best option, not Mitch (I fall in that category)
5. People will go back and forth citing stats, ratings, perceptions...and in the end nobody will agree on anything.

you are 100% correct. it appears galt, someday is coming, waitwhat the turning were correct on the qb assessment but where does that get us? Its over now and those responsible paid the price. 24 hr quiet period of any player bashing should be the order of the day.

This is what we've come to: people patting themselves on the back because they were "right" about the Gopher's starting QB not being very good.

Good for you - you were right. Next year you can find something else to be "right" about.

Meanwhile, the Gopher FB team will play a game on Saturday. And, if the Gophers are going to win, that same QB that so many "fans" love to hate will be starting for the Gophers. If he plays well, it helps the Gophers' odds of winning.

So, what do the Leidner haters root for? Do they root for Leidner to play poorly, proving them "right" once again. Or, do they root for Leidner to play well, thereby improving the team's chances of winning?

I mean this 100% - I truly believe there are people on this board who would rather see Leidner play poorly - and the team loses the game - rather than see Leidner play well. I'll repeat that - I believe there are people on this board who would rather see the Gophers lose than see Leidner play well. That is what we have come to.

Personally, I would love to see Leidner play the best game of his career, and see the Gophers post a big win. And, if that happens, I promise not to come on here and gloat that I was "right."

Sort of. He's not a D3 player. He's not as bad as some like to believe. Average or below average? Probably. One of the worst QBs in D1 history? Nah.

I want to see him play his best game of his career to this point, only to be followed by a better game next week against wisconsin!

Go Gophers!

So the football department posted an article about Leidner on their facebook page called "Leidner's Drive Is Unparalleled". I knew the second I saw it there was going to be a lot of ridiculous comments. Why do people feel the need to go out of their way to rip on him constantly? It's pathetic.

Here's the article: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/111716aab.html

No they weren't.

You know whats possible? Being able to separate player evaluation from feelings towards the program. I don't think Leidner is a good QB, I never have. I root like hell for the Gophers to win every game he plays in, just like I imagine every other person who doesn't think highly of Leidner as a QB does.

No they weren't.

If the good Mitch from last's year's Iowa, NE, MI, MO and even the 2nd Half of the Wisconsin game shows-up on Saturday the Gophers win. If that Mitch shows-up against WI next week or in the Bowl Game they could win those too.

The problem is take away the ISU, a heavily overmatched opponent, and Good Mitch hasn't shown-up all year.

Who the hell knows why, but it would be great to see him again.

Completely Agree. Both AAK and Cupito had warts, but they did their job and were solid Gophers.

You are right on. By the same token, there are a lot of posters here who want to see the Gophers get rolled the next two weeks because they want to see Claeys fired.
