Mitch Leidner's Finale

Like most big games.. He lost.

Ummm...pretty simplistic view. ML did everything a QB needed to do to win. Berkley Edwards was dropped a beautiful long pass that hit him in the hands with nothing in front of him but the end zone, defense gave up an 80 yard off tackle run for a TD in Q4. Those two plays were the difference.

Dang, folks take this site seriously. IDK, Jerry Kill and Limegrover blew QB smoke for 3-4 years and that kind of sucked but they paid the price for that and are now gone. Leidner's play does not deserve defending. his effort? sure does, he put in his time and did what was asked to the best of his ability.

He's had some very good performances and kept us in many games...more times than not...and much more compared to most of his recent predecessors.

Are you talking about Mortell?

I am not saying that you can't or shouldn't criticize Gopher players on this board.

I'm just asking for a little balance and perspective. I think the bashing of Leidner has gone over-the-top and (some) people are piling on just to be jerks.

I would like to see how some of these posters would handle it if they had cameras following them around at work, and people ripping them on the internet every time they made a mistake.

I'm not perfect - you're not perfect - Mitch Leidner is not perfect.

Say what?

Yes, heard from a reliable source that the Rhoda era is over. Classy move. Like ML7, he has worked his butt off for the program, from walk-on to finally being awarded a scholarship last spring. And now they take it away from him in less than a year.

Thanks for the info.

If true (& I'm not doubting you) that is pretty classless.

It also shows the even the coaches didn't feel he was our 2nd best QB this year and they truly did value RedShirting Croft and Green over "coaching for their job this season." I seem to recall being trashed pretty significantly on this board from a few on how stupid I was to suggest such a thing.

Lesson learned: TC is ruthless.

Re the Rhoda situation we still have 3 games. Why would they drop that now when they may need him? Croft has surpassed him? No longer worried about Crofts redshirt? Doesn't make a lot of sense. Did someone force this issue?

Interesting about the scholarship. I had heard from a pretty reliable source that Rhoda was informed that he would NOT be the starting QB next year. Don't know if one triggered the other or what.

Interesting timing about all of it, to say the least. I agree that, if both are true, why it's even being discussed at this time anyway.

This is one of the oddest things I have seen posted here, and that's saying a lot. You're telling me with multiple games left in the season, months before signing day, the head coach walked up to his backup QB and told him he's done and removing his scholarship? Complete and utter BS

I agree the timing is odd, but that doesn't make it complete and utter BS. We don't know all the details. If true, maybe CR15 is trying to figure out what he is going to do moving forward (graduating?) so he wanted an honest response from the coaches on their plan for him next year now and they gave it to him. Folks were really upset on here when they pulled TB41's RS for special teams then it came out that Thomas and his family asked for it. If true, I would like to think there is more to the story than TC just being ruthless. We might find out on Senior Day Saturday....

Them thinking that Rhoda won't be the starter next year doesn't surprise me but the timing of all this seems really odd. As far as I know there is nothing that has to be declared in regards to scholarships at this point so not sure why you wouldn't wait to address it until after the season.

Of course this is all just second hand info at this point so tough to really tell what happened until something more official on it comes out.

The scenario you laid out is one that would make a lot of sense with the timing. Would give Rhoda the ability to get announced along with the seniors if he doesn't plan on being back next season. Frankly it is really the only reason I can think of for addressing something like this before the end of the season.

On Claeys' radio show, Grim mentioned that they'd be honoring 13 seniors on Saturday and Claeys informed him it would be more like 20 players, with players moving on from the program.

Arguably the sooner the kid knows the better, but who knows.

I would also argue that determining who your retained scholarship players are sooner rather than later will help dictate your recruiting strategy. Knowing how many spots you have available with some level of certainty will enable you to know how many from your "wish list" you'll have the ability to sign and accordingly how many you can make a strong push for.

I understand that college football is more of a business and less of a game, so I see your point, sort of. And it appears that 20 will be honored on Senior Day, not just the 13 listed on the roster, so he gets a nice sendoff. And maybe they think it is more fair to him to tell him last week so that he can register for more Spring semester classes and graduate in May, if he wasn't already on track to do so. But he's still your #2 QB, and if something happens to ML7 in the next 3 games, it seems like a pretty tough spot to put the kid into, for confidence reasons. If he's good enough to get a scholarship last spring, I just think it's classier to honor it until he completes his eligibility. Fine, he's not going to be the starter, but he could run the scout team. And get a year of grad school under his belt while on scholarship as his reward for all his hard work and the expense of being a walk on for 3 years with the program. Pollyanna that I am.

I hear you, and it's really unfortunate that things like this happen. Ultimately, Claeys has to look out for himself, and if he feels like that scholarship would be better utilized elsewhere, that's the decision he has to make. The downside is that a young man has to bear the personal and emotional cost of that decision.

You were doing great until your third line...

I don't see your point and you overstated the concern about Barber...it pretty much was known when he played that everybody was in agreement with the move.

All that may be true, but no reason to tell the players until the season is over. What's the advantage of pissing someone off now who you might need to play for you?

Lot of speculation on here. For all we know, Rhoda may have decided he didn't want to return, or wants to graduate and get on with his life, since he is not going to be an NFL QB.

If Claeys is really running Rhoda off, then I will have lost any respect I still had for him (Claeys). Apparently the Gophers need room in the recruiting class for all those 4* recruits they have commitments from................................

Mitch is a good, tough kid who is way over his head in Division 1 as a QB. He might have been a decent TE. That said, I agree that if Claeys and the staff felt they had a better option they'd go with it. It's not his fault he's an inaccurate passer, who is marginally athletic and makes poor decisions and reads.
