Will Tracy Claeys be fired before 2017?

Although he has been given some extremely very good fortune (light schedule, opponent back-up quarterbacks) and they have had some nail biters against some really bad teams (Oregon State, Purdue, Rutgers, Colorado State, Illinois for three quarters), I believe Claeys deserves another year. They are two games up from last year and let's face it, he saves them some $$. I wouldn't extend by a year and then make a final decision based upon next season.

He needs to win one more game or he should be fired; pretty simple. This is the easiest schedule the Gophers will EVER have.

Well GL, you know how to get clicks with your subject, but now we get thread #35 on this topic.

I thought it was thread #45......does it ever end?

Either fire him after this year or you keep him and the staff for a minimum of two after this - can't expect improvement with a RS Fr/So signal caller taking over after this. (No Rhoda trolling)

They need to have someone reach out to Bohl and have a gentlemen's agreement before doing anything. I know there are restrictions on when they can officially contact a coach under contract during the season but the last thing the Gophers need is to fire TC and then enter into a 'coaching search'. If they fire TC - they need to have the replacement lined up and not just some vague hopes or dreams of Dungy coming here or some other super coach. If they can't get a verbal agreement from one of their current top 3 (and we all know they have a list) - you stick with TC for another limited extension (2 years).

That said - no better time to make the change than now given ML is graduating and it gives the new staff free reign to implement their system without fear of taking a step back because they are changing things on a 5th year QB that should be expected to truly lead the team. At some point - whether it is TC or the new staff - you need to stop focus on 'win now' (which translates into maybe 1 more win during the season) and focus on building a foundation for the future.

"He saves them some dollars" This sounds exactly like the same reasoning that has been used by past U of M presidents and administrators... look where that has gotten the program. Saving dollars isn't going to help anything.

His buyout is cheap. Ticked-off about that too? :D

No, they will not and should not fire him, it's probably a good time to check some expectations though.

Absolutely, if they end up losing their last 3 conference games and bowl game. Not likely if they lose their last 3 conference games but win their bowl game to finish with 8 wins. No, if they win any of their remaining conference games. Sainthood if they beat Wisconsin in Madison.

You can't wait until after the bowl game. If you are going to make a move, it has to come the night of or day after the final conference game.

There is a schedule easier than this one. I've seen it already, and it's in 2018 or 2019 I believe. But we still are the gopher so I wouldn't put anything past us.

Well, I was at the UNLV - Wyoming game yesterday and there is really no excuse to lose to UNLV. The Gophers have lost to 3 good teams and some people want him fired. Who would want Bohl when he can't beat UNLV in his 3rd year? If he came to Minnesota and had a comparable loss I can only imagine the calls for his head. The grass isn't always greener (that next coach who is going to lead us to undefeated season s and no heartbreaking losses probably doesn't exist). Claeys fields a competitive team that will win their share of games, let's give him some time and hope for a magical season that we can all savor for years. Go Gophers!

Just say no to Craig Bohl.

Bohl stunk it up at Nebraska and was a terrible defensive coordinator for that program. He was part of the demise of the black shirts, I want nothing to do wit him.

Keep the current staff less the extra pounds. Tracy needs to get his big butt in better shape, he is the face of the program and to recruits he needs to have a better physical appearance. However, maybe the exception I would like to see a change at is strength and conditioning coordinator and staff. Doesn't seem like we have elevated much with that staff or really seen any kind of innovation or noted improvement on the offensive and defensive lines. We need an emphasis on improving agility and strength. Like it or not head coaches are marketers too, and appearance will matter to a lot of recruits and parents that will wonder if he is that large if he will have the health to continue. It is discriminatory to say that I know, but Major College football is an image business and how you look and dress for your players does matter some. You can't expect men that work their butts off and are in great shape to work hard for you when in your personal life you are grossly out of shape. Getting in better shape will give him more energy and help him be more involved on the sidelines.

For his long term health Claeys should lose some weight but if you really think recruits are making their college choice based on the physical appearance of the head coach you are nuts. But go ahead and body shame someone if it makes you feel better about yourself.

Bielema is almost as big as Claeys and he doesn't seem to have any trouble recruiting. The "appearance" argument is a red herring and is another reason to belittle him for those who've decided they don't like him and want him fired.

I like coach Claeys and want him to succeed and think he is a quality coach. I just think dropping the weight would help him with recruits, you might not think it matters but I bet some parents notice it. Parents do have influence with their kids. I think Harbaugh and Chryst can use it in negative recruiting competing for the same recruits, they can badmouth him about it.
Maybe I'm wrong, I'm by no means an athlete right now and out of shape myself, so I need to take my own advice. I have not and am not advocating firing the coach, I have said in other threads I think we need to stay the course and turning backwards now will have a major negative affect on the program. Our facilities right now are some of the worst in the Big 10 besides the stadium, this and our lack of fans or game day attendance. I think given the chance these coaches will have sustained and better success.

OK! Let's all agree that a notch below Iowa and Wisconsin in our division is acceptable and stop all this nonsense about conference championships. I'm fine with that.

You're going to compare Claeys to a coach who won 3 big ten titles and went 47-9 in the Conference?

It's different to change appearance with success.

Bill Belicheck was fired in Cleveland too. I'd roll the dice on bohl based off of his track record from 2003-2016, not 2000-2002

jfc serious football families dont care if claeys is fat and i dont either if the dude wins football games can we put this one to bed please.

and if we do axe claeys i want kiffin or scott frost

Wow, I could certainly be wrong but I highly doubt Chryst is using Claeys weight as a ploy to get players to pick Wisconsin over Minnesota. He has plenty of reasons to use without resorting to name calling and body shaming which I hope would turn off more recruits and their families as opposed to win them over. You will notice I left out Harbaugh, I don't think he would use Claeys' weight either but I really don't think he gives us a second thought because we are not recruiting in the same stratosphere as those guys right now.

2019 is basically the same conference schedule as this years with home and away portions flip-flopped. Neb, Ill, Mary, Penn St, and Wis. at home. All things being equal, it would be an easier schedule than this years.

You're part of the problem why we can't get past eight wins. You must suffer dire consequences.

Exactly! No one cares if Claeys is fat - it's another reason for you to hate him piled on top of the others. As you've stated here, you wouldn't care about his weight if he were meeting expectations. As I've accurately stated, it's a red herring. Thank you for making my point.
