this morning on kfan danny b said he thinks Claeys should have to win 2 of last 3 to keep his job. I disagree with him, we go 8-4 and he's fine.

8-4 coupled with 13 out of 14 in recruiting for next year and a change my be necessary.

Fire a coach that goes 8-4 in his first full season at a program like Minnesota? I bet other good coaches would be breaking down the door wanting this job.

If the people who make this decision use one year's recruiting ranking as a reason to fire him, then our athletic department is more pathetic than I thought.

That's when the AD says, we need better recruiting, we have new facilities coming on board and we need a more dynamic coach to build on this foundation.

Coaches aren't going to turn down this job because we only gave the interim coach 1.5 seasons.

This is a big ten job. This is a top 50 job in the country.

Coaches might turn this job down due to low salary or due to waiting for a better job.

You honestly think recruiting rankings should be used in the decision process? Think carefully before answering.

Recruiting in general is different than team recruiting rankings for one year.

Absolutely. The ranking is just the starting point for evaluation of recruiting.

The Kill/Claeys situation reminds me a lot of Schiano/Flood at Rutgers.

Schiano built a solid foundation at Rutgers and they promoted Flood from within. Flood was 9-4 his first season, but you never got the feeling he was going to be a good coach. The program trended downward the following years and he was fired after year 4.

A decision will have to be made one way or the other after this season. 8 regular season wins is the point where I'm not sure what Coyle will do. If they lose the last 3, I think he'll be gone before the bowl game. A 4-5 B1G record with the softest schedule you can have is not worthy of an extension.

This is an interesting development. My sources have indicated that prior to this news, Claeys had only planned on trying to win 1 of the last 3 games.

Claeys isn't the interim coach.

Absolutely.

Priceless. Don't even find out if the recruits pan out - if they aren't ranked high out of high school by someone else then it is a reason to fire him. This is as stupid as it gets - maybe even stupider.

If he is going to get fired, he better be gone before the bowl game regardless, especially if he is 8-4. You better have someone good in mind and almost locked up.

Please name one awe-inspiring coach that would take the job, is a great X/O guy, is a great recruiter, and thinks that being fired after going 8-4 after his first year is an alluring prospect.

@Michigan is probably tougher than @Penn State, and Michigan State could be good again next year, who knows. If they're still terrible then it's probably close to equal, though @Oregon State likely isn't a guaranteed win. So if nothing else, the 2017 schedule is probably tougher than 2016.

Schiano was at Rutgers four years before Flood was added to the staff and wasn't an integral member of Schiano's foundation-building. Claeys was with Kill for twenty years and most definitely was an integral member.

Sorry, I probably didn't make it clear. I think the discussion of firing Claeys if he goes 8-4 is the single dumbest thing ever discussed on Gopherhole. I have been posting here a long time. I am not one of those posters who hates speculation or rips on anyone who brings up recruiting rankings, but the discussion of firing an 8-4 Tracy Claeys is pure lunacy.

That said, IF the U was choosing to fire him at 8-4, they BETTER have an amazing coach sitting there begging to take the job. I was critiquing his idea that at 7-5, you fire him immediately, but at 8-4. . .maybe you wait out the bowl game. It was an atrocious take.

There was also a lot more going on with Kurt Flood than with Tracy Claeys.

Right at the beginning of the 2015 season he was suspended by the school for essentially strong-arming a professor about the academic status of one of his players (that player had been charged with numerous prior felonies and including a massive home invasion plot (where 6 players were arrested, CHARGED, and kicked off the team).

So yeah, quite a different scenario.

Yes he won't be fired for going 8-4. Lose out in horrific fashion and it's really hard to say. My bet is we take one or two of Nebby and NW. I don't want this staff to go. I want them to get a little better.

Michigan loses a ton of talent especially if Peppers declares for the draft. They may be tougher than PSU this year, when we played them, but no where near this years team. MSU is an enigma they may or may not be better than Rutgers next year. We'll have a new quarterback next year that has been developed in the new system we only lose one offensive lineman there is every reason to believe that the offense will be better next year. On defense we seem to have players to replace what we lose so we should be alright there and will be in the second year of the defensive changes so overall we just may be better there.

If not fired an extension has to be given. Has he earned it? If you want you're coach under contract for five years, is Claeys the guy?

It's a really tough call if we finish 8-4.

Exactly. Those are my exact sentiments. I don't want to staff fired. Who the heck wants to start over again? But to say it's an impossibility at this point -- that's the naive take. Declining attendance, new AD, 3 very good teams left on the schedule. Anything is possible -- including 10-2!

First year head coach, first year DC, and new OC and OL coaches. Mistakes have been made. Many more than we've seen in the past 5 years, I'd argue. That said, I'd also say we've seen some encouraging signs. The 2-min drills have been much improved (yesterday notwithstanding), the Freshmen on D look like future stars, red zone offense has been great, and more. A calm, rational, reasoned argument can be had on this topic. But it'll obviously be much clearer in 3 weeks.

PS: Dan B knows less about this team than 99% of posters on GH. His opinion means nothing to me.
