New OC ideas ?

We won't run a spread, but we will spread it out. More outside runs (which we almost never do), screens (which we saw them try way more after JK left), etc. We will need to get our tackles outside consistently. Not sure who on our roster now can do that?

Agreed. I said this in the other thread, but Claeys was always harping on "getting the ball to our playmakers in space" after Kill left. We saw the exact opposite of that under Limegrover. I don't fault him -- it worked well to possess the ball and win close games at SIU, NIU, and to an extent UM. Unfortunately, it bogged down way too often and it's clear Claeys was sick of it.

FWIW, I don't see a lack of offensive playmakers on this team. Like Claeys, I see a lack of creative ways to get them the ball in space. Both RB's are very athletic. Maye has shown that. Wolitarsky has more burst than people give him credit for. Still can go get the ball in single coverage. Lingen seems like a good pass catcher. The rFR WR's looked as good to me on tape and in practice as many other B1G WR's. Jeff Jones? I'm looking forward to seeing how things shake out. Definitely a FAR more interesting offseason than we've had in a while, for better or for worse.

Agreed. Most football fans don't realize how much of a chess game football really is. Sure, sometimes it's that we just don't have the players, but sometimes it's the schemes also. I've said that Limegrover got all his plays from a "Offensive playcalling for dummies book." Which is obviously an exaggeration but my point was that he really has nothing more than a vanilla offense. And also now we know the blame doesn't all fall on him, as we learned Zim also had a part in the playcalling, but either way... Our Offense always seemed so easy to defend (pre-Kill retirement). Post Kill, the offense seemed a bit more unpredictable, but still wasn't very creative. We need someone that has some creativity, and that can play chess with these B10 defensive coordinators.

I think Bleed should be the new OC.

That way we will be getting all the inside info. He would probably even let us call some of the plays.:cool02:

An outside the box name. Tyson Helton the Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach at Western Kentucky. UWK is first in offensive efficiency in all of college football and fourth in points per game and the QB so far has 42 TD and 6 int. Before anyone dismisses a coordinator at that level remember that Oklahoma brought in ECU's offensive coordinator last off-season.

This and Sean Lewis of Bowling Green were my first thoughts. Even if Lewis used to be a badger.

Of course I will support the hire if that's who he chooses, but I'm not exaggerating when I say there are dozens of people: A.more qualified; B. who would be better than Tony Levine, a guy fired from his last job, has literally never been an offensive coordinator for one second and who hasn't coached for the past year; and C. would come here if selected. Unfortunately for many of the provincialists here, none of them went to the U of M. I'll never get it - why do we want guys who played here, for a school that has been extremely mediocre in football for the past 5 decades, not to mention guys who were fired for failing at their last job?

Agreed. Not a fan of Levine.

I hope not, given that he's never coached QBs above the DIII level and has never coached period at the FBS level.

I don't think that necessarily matters. Assistants/OC's have made pretty big jumps in the past. Gus Malzhan went from being a HS coach to offensive coordinator at Arkansas. Paul Chryst was the OC at Illinois State, then spent a year in Saskatchewan before becoming OC at Oregon St.

Do the QBs throw underhanded at DIII? Hand off with their feet? I gotta see this!

I buy that argument for an OC. For a position coach - eh......

What's everybody thinking in terms of timing for new OC announcement?

I saw in other thread (maybe this one) that there was some speculation that this gets announced after the OC's bowl game?

What's everyone think?

Ryan Burns on Twitter: The #Gophers will be interviewing a candidate for the OC job here in the next 48 hours.

So maybe it's sooner than that.

Perhaps someone from straight south. It would be outside the box; I haven't heard even one mention. I have no inside knowledge... He would have some minor ties.

I would take him. Great track record with a balanced and successful offense and at developing QBs

Well he certainly was successful at NDSU. His tenure at Wyoming so far isn't too promising though... hard to say if he had the talent needed to succeed there though.

I have to think this is one of the guys Claeys has in mind. He did have a monster running back this season at Wyoming.

Partial Bio from Wyoming site:

Brent Vigen took over as Wyoming’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2014 and will enter his second season in that role in 2015. He will be entering his 18th year as a college coach and his seventh as an offensive coordinator. Vigen’s 2014 Cowboy offense ranked fifth in the Mountain West in passing offense, averaging 227.8 yards per game, and featured Biletnikoff Award Watch List receiver Dominic Rufran, who was invited to a free-agent camp by the Atlanta Falcons following his senior season. Another Cowboy senior, offensive tackle Connor Rains, signed as a free agent with the Denver Broncos. Vigen’s Wyoming offense was very effective at protecting the ball in 2014, committing only 18 turnovers to rank No. 4 in the MW and No. 33 in the nation.

Vigen served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Dakota State under new Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl from 2009-13. He began his college coaching career at his alma mater, NDSU, in 1998.

Vigen was the offensive coordinator for each of North Dakota State’s three consecutive FCS National Championships in 2011, ‘12 and ‘13. In 2013, Vigen’s offense at North Dakota State ranked No. 10 in the nation in scoring offense (38.7 points per game), No. 7 in rushing offense (257.3 yards per game), No. 14 in total offense (457.5 yards per game), No. 1 in third-down efficiency (55.4%), No. 3 in passing efficiency (164.9) and No. 6 in red-zone offense (89.2%). The 2013 NDSU offense also was one of only 12 FCS teams to average 200+ yards rushing and 200+ yards passing per game. The 2012 Bison offense ranked No. 7 in the nation in third-down efficiency (50.7%) and No. 16 in red-zone offense (89.2%). Vigen’s 2011 offense ranked No. 5 in the country in red-zone offense (91.1%).

An actual, legitimately qualified candidate? Nice!
