***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA V TEXAS TECH, PITINO V TUBBY IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Some of you guys spend so much time bitching about refs. Do you think Minnesota would be ahead in this game if they called a different type of game?

Place the bitching where it belongs: on our own players and coach.

I apologize for discussing something that is part of college basketball. No where did I say or even hint at the fact the refs are the reason we lost. If you can't tell that refs are calling the game a differently early in the season then you don't pay attention.

I'm not going to bitch about our players and team because I expected our team to struggle this season. Nothing I've seen so far surprises me. But I don't expect 40+ fouls to be called every game. It makes it hard to watch any games.

But again I apologize to everyone for discussing something college basketball related on a college basketball forum.

Two hallmarks of a well coached team are defense and rebounding. I challenge this coaching staff to get this team looking like it's well coached. It's early, but...

Didn't watch the game... but wow, Tubby must be smiling. Congrats to him. He's had to rebuild Texas Tech also, and it seems he's ahead of us now.

This was a problem last year and continues to be a problem this year. The funny thing is that both these problems are about players digging deep and giving an effort. It's not an issue of skill, just an issue of grit and perseverance. How does Pitino light that fire in this squad?

Really an awful performance in all areas. I think the criticism of Pitino will likely get out of hand in the media over the next couple of days, but it will be hard to feel sorry for him. The biggest thing that stands out to me is the 7 assists. There was virtually no ball movement for long stretches of the game and a ton of wild drives in to the lane (Morris, Mason, Dorsey, even King) that were really ugly. I think that the criticism of the interior defense is warranted, but it's not just Konate and Diedhiou...King, Buggs, and Murphy were awful in this area too. Buggs, in particular, had an atrocious game and the mental errors were glaring. He seemed to have turned a corner against Temple to me, but this was the type of game that makes you think it's just time to move on. From a team defense perspective, I think the teaching of the guys to basically stand tall with their hands up needs to be re-evaluated. A number of times, the defender in this straight up position has found himself out of position to rebound a miss because they aren't in any type of athletic stance which leads to the shooter or someone else having a much better shot at the O-board.

I expected some bad losses like this one to occur this season thought this was probably the worst bad loss Pitino could take as more eyes will be on it. That said, I didn't expect to see a team that doesn't appear to be coached well which has been the case in the past two games. The other thing that is apparent to me is that this team lacks in any sort of a physical edge, which has unfortunately been a trend so far in the Pitino era. I would have said Mathieu was our toughest player last year and this year I'd say it's Dorsey. We badly need a forward or center that plays with an edge.

The second game in a row where it's really tough to come up with a bright spot. I still believe in Pitino's potential, but today certainly was a day that tests that belief.

Well said. I hope they accept the challenge and are capable of making some very needed improvements.

Rough game. This was as poorly as we've played in the 5 games. I doubt TT shoots a higher 3 point % this year. That seems to happen a lot. And the refs really are making the game unwatchable with the fouls. I'd rather watch a 55-50 game with some flow than a 75-70 free throw fest.

Start murphy - Konate never will become dominate and Diediou is one of the worst players I have ever seen. Our defense is terrible..

When everyone said this was going to be a difficult year, what exactly were you expecting? Bad, young teams make a lot of mistakes.

I agree that Gaston may be a lost cause, but I still believe that Konate may become a pretty valuable player within a reasonable period of time and with only 10 active scholarship players, the team must play him more than nominal minutes.

Texas Tech is picked to finish last in the Big 12 this year...LAST. And the conference isn't even that good. No way the Gophers should've gotten beat by them. They were pretty much manhandled the whole game. Did they even lead once during the game? Tubby had his guys prepared and they were focused. The Gophers have much more talent than TT, so this was just inexcusable. I'm sorry.

Konate will be a force as a senior. He wont be Dieng, but he's going to be a nice center, with 3 years of starting experience. Gas, is pretty bad. I just don't see it with him, but we will see. He needs minutes, he'll get them this year.

I'm glad a lot of people are jumping completly off the bandwagon already, I just hope you stay off/away the whole year. We knew this was going to be an ugly year, and if you cannot see the future in some of these kids, you're either blind or my glasses are very rose colored.

Agreed it was a bad loss, but doesn't surprise me. And as much as Tubby wants to throw jabs at MN now, whatever. Glad he's feeling smug today.

What disappointed me more than anything was Carlos Morris and lack of ball movement in general. Pass the ball and stop jacking awful shots. Drive and kick. Drive and kick. Can't set these tendencies to not pass in the young kids.

The refs are also really annoying. And no doubt caused the Gophers to play tentative and scared to drive. They'll learn though. Young team and they'll get better.

It looks very obvious to me that this team has very little installed from a defensive and offensive end. And when you think about who the returning players are, it's easy to imagine that it's rather difficult to have any sort of continuity with this team thus far. Carlos, I would be a million, is not tutoring anyone, hes the one that needs tutoring, Konate has been hurt, Gas and Buggs are on this team because they are big and athletic. That leaves Mason and King, while a lot of press has been saying King is a great leader and wants to get into coaching, I dont remember him being a coach on the floor while at Eastview. Things could have changed...

Throw in that you cannot even keep one single lineup on the floor due to fouls, and you've got a recipe for disaster.

It'll take time, and all this playing time will benefit these youngsters next year. Will be a completely different start to the season next year from a progress standpoint.

The horrible defense was also frustrating. But that's been a theme all year so isn't as disappointing, but yeah.

Football team always takes care of business against Tech.

Please hold up your end guys!

It's fine to be optimistic, but - sorry to say - I just don't see a lot of reasons for optimism at this point.

Hopefully, with time and experience, this team will be able to improve over the course of the season - but with the current roster, and the limitations of most of the players, this team has NO margin for error.

To win games, they need a lot of things to go their way.

I expect there will be some good games this season, and there are going to be games that make us want to scratch out our eyeballs with our bare hands.

I am adopting the following approach: I don't expect this team to win a single game this year. I have zero expectations. I will be pleasantly surprised with every victory, and I will not sweat the losses. That is the only way I can maintain enough enthusiasm to watch the games.

By next year, with more experience for the younger players, the addition of the incoming freshmen and the transfers, I may raise my expectations, but for this year, I'm not going to drive myself crazy obsessing about every loss.

Someday I would like to see a great shooter on this team - I watch Duke, Indiana and other teams take the same shots we do but they knock them down. Mason and Morris are always short on their shots. Someday I would also like to see an athletic center!

Today was pretty bad. I realize that this year's team is qualitatively different from Pitino's first two, but we should try to remember similar holiday tournament results from his first two years. All three years produced 1-2 Thanksgiving period tournament results. This one was no worse than the one during his first year when we lost to an unranked Arkansas team by a worse margin than today and had to salvage one win by beating DII Chaminade (we actually trailed for a significant portion of the game in that one).

In both of the prior seasons, the team didn't lose another non-conference game. I don't expect that same result due to the differences in rosters and the greater difficulty of the remaining non-conference games, but they could finish this nonconference season better than most of us probably expect right now.

If Mason could take some of Squirrel's ball hogging and shot taking that would help. He needs to be far more assertive if our offense is going to amount to anything.

Pretty bad, you have to go back to the Monson years to find a game that was defended this badly, you have to work to be good on defense, so far that hasn't happened. Hope it was an anomaly, if not this is going to be a very long season.

Apparently Tubby has memory issues and doesn't remember his introductory press conference and first couple years. At the time it was the biggest non-game related sports hysteria I can recall in Minnesota (later eclipsed by a certain QB.)

Yeah, that comment kinda pisses me off. It was a huge celebration when he was announced as our coach and was very well liked. I thought he was better than that but I guess not.

Morris is our leading scorer today, second leading rebounder, team leader in steals and leading assist guy....so I'll ask again where are we going to get this production without him?
While Mason has made some free throws in one game... he was 2 for 9 today...shooting poorly again. He added zero assists, zero rebounds, one steal, 2 TO's and four fouls in 33 minutes but Morris is the problem? King and Morris is all we have so far that have any consistency.

Agreed, strange comment. I still have my Tubby time shirt, and I recall the student section bowing to him like he was a god every time his name was announced with the starting lineup. He can have his opinion about whether or not expectations were unfairly high, but he was definitely heralded and beloved until fans felt he wasn't meeting their expectations.
