***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT #1 RANKED OHIO STATE BUCKEYES IN-GAME THREAD***

Mitch played hard... he made one big mistake, and a few small ones, but played decent. I blame time management for the loss, and the coaches for not having any sense of urgency. We almost scored twice in the last 4 minutes. Yet 3rd and most of 4th quarters, we did nothing but run run pass punt. If Claeys is hired, please name a new OC.

I am sort of glad Ohio State scored late so there wouldn't be some sort of false narrative about this game. The Gophers sat on the ball before halftime and then somehow decided to punt facing a 4th and 9 down two touchdowns with 6 and change left in the 4th quarter. You just can't make clearly wrong decisions like this and win football games.

Kill routinely did that under similar time conditions and down 3-4 TDs. Down by 2 TDs, defense playing decently, it's an arguable call. We almost had a chance to go for a tying TD if Poock stays in his gap.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda

Mitch is going to be hurting tomorrow. He got crushed tonight.

ML7 was hurt. 4th and 9 with Demry on your own end? Better off punting, forcing a punt, then scoring with about 2 minutes left. You know, what happened.

. Agreed. With even an average offense we'd be a formidable team. It's sad that the D has to play their absolute A game for us to have a chance. Something must be changed on offense. Limegrover?

I know as a Gopher fan, I am ALWAYS glad when we give up a late TD, just so we don't have to listen to our own fans complain about a controversial call, or some "false narrative" wherein we played a solid game but came up short. And our decision to punt left us with a chance to get a stop on 3rd and 9 with 2:00 mins left. Would have gotten the ball back with ~1:10 with a chance to tie. That was the right choice on 4th and 9 with 6 minutes left.

I am getting tired of the news stories on him being an education major. It is like distraction by continued repetition of the same information.

He got schooled by Bosa. He is an NFL major LOL.

On the bright side, our margin of loss was the same as LSU's .
(Moral victory!)

FTR - CP12 missing assignments has been an issue all year. For all the good plays he has, and he has a lot of them, he is a risk out there. Kinda like DC26 was last year. Folks wondered out loud why Williams played ahead of him some earlier in the year.... You saw why at a critical time today. Not a shot at Poock, I like him, but it won't be the last time we see something like that.

Gotta give Mitch a lot of credit- spent the whole game getting crushed and beaten up and kept coming back. Doubt there's a tougher qb in the B1G.

Oh my god this makes my head hurt. So, you are defending the decision to punt down 14 with ~6 minutes to go because it "might have worked this time"? Ridiculous. So the Gophers get a 3 and out from Ohio State, then complete a 50 yard pass play (how many of those do they have all season?) and then still need to get another 3 and out to HOPE to get the ball back with ~1:10 and a chance to drive the length of the field with no timeouts. Look at what you are saying man. A whole lot of unlikely things occurred in the Gophers favor after that punt and their best case scenario was still to get the ball back with 1:10 left and no timeouts at like their ~20 yard line. Yep, good decision to punt there...clearly the long term right play.

Whatever happened to Robert Ndondo-Lay? He gave them a lot of quality snaps last year at DT, even if he was undersized. Is he hurt too? Elliot had 114 yards on 26 carries and his longest run was 15 yards. I kind of figured with Stetler, Timms and a converted DE in Elmore playing almost all the snaps at DT, it would easily be double that.

Another Top rank team and we lose a close one. Yes, some coaching and player mistakes. That is to be expected. I think Gopher fans expected TC to be N. Saban and Come in and demolish UM and tOSU. I would be N. Saban wouldn't win these two games with our depleted and injured roster.

Give TC some damn props for how hard our team played these past two games. We have a lot of top players injured and it's a lost season. We don't have depth yet to sustain injuries like this. To be in the games with a chance to win with what we have is pretty impressive.

I would say the chance of forcing some 3 and outs on a team looking to run out the clock is probably somewhat better than hitting a third and nine. Neither option had better than 20-30% chance of success. It's a ****ty position to be in.

This staff has always done this. I thought maybe it was just Jerry's call, but clearly they all think the same way.

When Claeys confirmed he was Kill's time management guy last week, it made me nervous about time management going forward. I really think an offensive coach should be giving time management help.

2 photos of not hitting in the head or neck area. What a mother f'in joke. Obviously can crown of helmet is well below the head and neck. Absolutely maddening. Even if u don't have the guts to toss a player, the flag on the field should stand as a personal foul!!!!!

There were 6 and a half minutes left, and we had 3 timeouts. That's a lot to work with, especially at the collegiate level. Ohio St didn't even go 3 and out after the punt. Plus, Croft was in, our o-line couldn't stop the pass rush for more than 3 seconds all night, and there was 6:32 left. It was the right decision. I'll give you that it's a debatable call, but you're way off base here to be arguing so much about it.

ETA: And can't we get back to what we agree on: what a sigh of relief it was for all Gopher fans to see Cardale Jones score that clinching TD!!!

Look at the official who made the call in this picture. Staring right at the play, unobstructed, about 10 feet away. And this was after the crown of the helmet hit Mitch's face mask and his head snapped back.

Also, this post is a good example of WHY you punt there. What do you think the odds are of Croft getting 4th and 9 there? And, even if we do, we're still around midfield. If we don't get it, the game is over there.

When you're down 2 scores, there's not a lot of paths to victory, so the right choice is to extend the game as much as possible. Then, fun things like a 50 yard pass could happen.Or get a 3 and out, which we didn't actually do. Maybe we recover the onside kick. Or block a punt or force a turnover. A lot needs to happen for us to come back in that situation. Some good things happened for us, some didn't, and we couldn't pull off the miracle. But that's why playing out your chances over 6:30 is a better choice than betting the farm on a 4th and 9 with a true freshman backup QB and a line that can't protect the passer.

It just ticks me off. It shouldn't, but it does. To not call it is one thing. That's fine. To call it and pick up the damn flag...

Review got it right. I was pissed, but it was not targeting. You can argue that the crown is not part of the hit.

I still don't think there was enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. But whatever, move on I guess.

One thing I think should be changed is that they should have two different versions of the targeting penalty. Similar to flagrant 1 and 2 in basketball.

Have the option to eject the player if they think it is egregious. But not automatic ejection.

Haven't slogged though this particular cesspool of a thread, so I don't know if this was posted, but Dilly Bar Dan was wearing shorts tonight:

What did he hit him with then????? Shoulder? No. His ass? No. So what then? His face mask? Hard to do that when your head is down.

Punt was the right call. Croft completing fourth and nine cold has about a 5% probability.
